Prof. Armani was given a tour of the Universities optical facilities and presented her lecture to a mixed crowd of approximately 30 faculty and students. Undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty all attended, which is a testament to the diverse audience that the University of Victoria SPIE student chapter appeals to. 6. 7. SPIE Travel Scholarship Our undergraduate chapter member, Damon DePoali, was awarded a 2013 SPIE Travel Scholarship for his potential contributions to the field of optics and photonics. The scholarship will entitle Damon to attend the SPIE s Photonics West 14 conference. 16

8. Future Plans During its inaugural year, the University of Victoria SPIE student chapter did not hold any outreach events. In the coming year, many activities and events are in the planning stage and will hopefully be brought to fruition. A popular idea is to make contact with local high school and middle school teachers in the area in order to give interested students an opportunity to learn more about the optics and photonics that they encounter on a day to day basis. Many school tours also come through the University at various times over the year, so setting up a booth with exciting and fun demonstrations can help excite students passing by. A plan has also been set into motion to establish more of a presence among the students of UVic as well. A booth is to be created in September for the universities annual Club Days in order to recruit students from a more diverse range of faculties. These outreach activities will hopefully drive up the recruitment and increase university awareness. 17
