Los Angeles College Department of Chicano Studies presenta 70 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ZOOT SUIT RIOTS GUEST SPEAKERS: DR. JORGE GARCIA, PROFESSOR CHICANO STUDIES, CSUN DR. ENRIQUE OROZCO, PROFESSOR SOCIAL SCIENCES, PASADENA CITY COLLEGE, SPECIAL GUEST: CANDACE FORSYTHE (LEYVAS) (GRANDDAUGHTER OF LUPE LEYVAS AND NEICE OF HENRY LEYVAS) Los Angeles College marks the 70 th anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots that rocked Los Angeles during World War II. This was a pivotal event in the history of Los Angeles and in particular Chicano history. Special guest Candace Forsythe will discuss the events involving her uncle, Henry Leyvas. Henry was among a group of young Chicanos who were charged in the infamous "Sleepy Lagoon Murder" in 1942. She will also discuss her grandmother s activism during this period. The convictions in the case were ultimately determined to be a miscarriage of justice and the defendants exonerated. But the murder and publicity given to "zoot-suiters" was a pre-cursor to the 1943 riots, in which hundreds of young Chicanos were beaten by uniformed soldiers. Location: Campus Center Main Date: May 8, 2013 Time: 6:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. Sponsored by: Centro Xican@ Presents The Department of Chicano Studies Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan And the Associated Student Organization
