We have a busy month ahead with some great fundraising opportunities. We start off on July 4 with the Show Your Colors event at the Millbottom. Please see the flyer included in the newsletter. This is an "all hands on deck" event as we will be working throughout the day and into the evening. It should be a good time; we hope to see everyone there. Raffle tickets will also be sold at this event, as the drawing is on July 5. Please be sure to work hard this week to get these tickets sold, and turn in your money to any staff member. On July 23, join us at the Mari Osa Delta campground for an evening of music and food. We will be responsible for cooking the meal and collecting money at the gates, so please be sure to let a staff member know if you are willing help. The funds raised from this event will benefit the League. For more information, see the Activities section of this newsletter. Stay safe over the holidays, and have a great time with family and friends. Hope to see you at the July meeting and our upcoming events. As always, bring a Marine to any League function. Sr. Vice Advice: Invite former Marines and FMF Doc's to meetings or to any of our outings Frank Livingston Sr. Vice Commandant Chaplain s Chapel: But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For you, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12 Have a Safe and Happy 4th of July. Our detachment has plans for activities on the 4th. Please support them as your schedule will permit. Jr. Vice Commandant s Reminder: This newsletter is for the month of July, so this list is those members whose membership is renewed this month. Those members are: Timbrook, Daniel J.; Burns, Michael; Rathgeber, Lloyd; Robinson, Scott; Watson, Charles; and any member who has not renewed. Please send your $30 payment to: PO Box 1592, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102-1592 or bring to the July meeting. If you have already paid, please disregard this reminder and thank you very much for your support! Please bring fellow Marines with you to the meetings for possible membership to the League. To clarify this public service to our members, this is NOT a delinquent list being published. It is a REMINDER to those members that may not have received a renewal notice from National. Renewals are due in the month of the newsletter. I encourage you to show your support for your officers. Attend a meeting, fellowship with other Marines, sign a new member, make our detachment the best. Semper Fi and God Bless, Stanley Scott, Chaplain Activities Committee Input for July: While I was unable to partake of the June Dining Out at Canterbury Hill Winery, I understand that everyone signed up made it out and it proved to be a nice evening on the patio. Cook Your Own Steak Night also turned out to be a nice evening in the Bunker with everything on the grill from hamburger to filet mingnon accompanied by baked potato, green beans, fruit and cheese salad all followed by dessert. Thanks to Dotty Sanning for preparing the sides to go with dinner! We need to put another one of these on the calendar in the next couple of months, keep your eyes open. Monday July 4 th Independence Day: The Detachment needs a lot of volunteers at the Millbottom Events Center 400 W Main for this event. We will have food, cash bar, and a DJ to help celebrate Independence Day. Open to the public, this is a great place to watch the

fireworks from. Tickets available at the door. Please help make this great opportunity a success by volunteering if you are able. Also, let family, friends and co-workers know about it. Look for more details in this newsletter. In addition to Millbottom we are working on a booth downtown to take advantage of the foot traffic to pass out flyers on the event at the Millbottom, sell raffle tickets, hand out recruiting info for the Detachment and Auxiliary and pass out flyers for Rocking the River on July 23 rd. Wednesday July 13 th Dining Out: It has been close to a year since our first visit to West Main Pizza and the pie's were too good for us not to go back again. So, on Wednesday July 13 th we'll meet there at 1830, they are located at 1931 W Main St. Since our last visit they have expanded and in one of the new rooms they normally have a young lady by the name of Jordan performing acoustical country on Wednesday s. So, once we finish dinner you can mosey on over to the other room for a cold one and some country music if you like. That's my plan anyway! As always, if you can latch on to a potential member include them in you count and bring them along. Send your head count by Sunday July 10 th to sfgactivities@gmail.com or leave a message at 659-5069. See you there! If you have any suggestions for future activities please see Alan Sanning at the meeting, email sfgactivities@gmail.com, or call 659-5069. Semper Fi!!! Auxiliary s Article: Semper Fi, Ladies. Barb Diemler President Central Missouri Unit Marine Corps History: Selected July Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance: 4 July 1801: President Thomas Jefferson reviewed the Marines, led by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, LtCol William W. Burrows and the Marine Band, on the White House grounds. The smartly uniformed Marines performed drills and fired various salutes in observance of the new nation's 25th anniversary. 6 July 1990: One of the oldest and most versatile attack aircraft in Marine Corps history, the A-4 Skyhawk, retired from the Corps' active aviation structure after over 30 years of service. The last two Skyhawks from MAG-32 flew their final flight from Cherry Point to NAS Patuxent River on this date. 7 July 1941: The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Within a year of activation, the Wing would participate in the Marine Corps offensive at Guadalcanal. That bitter campaign would be the first in a series of legendary battles in which the Wing would add luster to its

reputation. The 1st MAW would earn five Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry in campaigns spanning World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. 11 July 1798: President John Adams approved "An Act for Establishing and Organizing a Marine Corps", and it became law. The following day, the President appointed William Ward Burrows the Major Commandant of the new Corps. In August, Major Burrows opened his headquarters in Philadelphia, at that time still the capital of the new nation. 14 July 1993: The USS Iwo Jima was decommissioned after over 30 years of service in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The ship was named for the World War II battle during which three Marine divisions ousted 20,000 entrenched Japanese troops. The Iwo Jima was commissioned 26 August 1961, and it was the first ship specifically designed as an amphibious assault ship from the keel up. 18 July 1918: The 4th Brigade of Marines began an attack near Soissons, France, as part of a threedivision counterattack against the Germans. In the first two days of battle, the brigade sustained 1,972 casualties. 24 July 1944: The V Amphibious Corps, commanded by Major General Harry Schmidt, landed on Tinian, in the Mariana Islands. The following morning, the 2d and 4th Marine Divisions began a shoulder-to-shoulder southward sweep of the island. Organized enemy resistance faded within a week, and on 1 August, MajGen Schmidt declared the island secure. 26 July 1947: The National Security Act of 1947 became effective, reaffirming the status of the Marine Corps as a separate military service within the Department of the Navy. The Act provided for Fleet Marine Forces, and confirmed the Corps' mission of seizing and defending advanced bases, as well as land operation incident to naval campaigns. 28 July 1918: Brigadier General John A. Lejeune assumed command of the 2d Division, U.S. Army in France, and remained in that capacity until August 1919 when the unit was demobilized. He was the first Marine officer to hold an Army divisional command, and following the Armistice, he led his division in the march into Germany. DD Stanley Scott and PDD Joe Terry both briefed us on their recent medical procedures. Both are doing well at this time and DD Scott is going to give the Doc's some more OJT in September. Hope he can get them squared away this time! BBQ Schedule for 2016: September 10 October 15 LIFE MEMBERSHIP FEE CHART: AGE FROM AGE TO FEE 0 35 $500 36 50 $400 51 64 $300 65 Over $200 Central Missouri Pound# 77 Many big barks to all the Dogs that were able to make the June Growl, it was good to see your paws on deck! Past Pound Keeper, PDD Steve Stovall, was received with hearty barks on his return to the Pound following his recent retirement from the Missouri National Guard. Congratulations and welcome home! We had a debrief on our very successful 8 th Annual Devil Dog Golf Tournament and everyone sounded very pleased with it. There were a number of suggestions offered on problem areas like cutting back on prizes because there were just too damn many! Seriously though, this year Tournament Director, PDD Scott Mayhew, put together some great swag bags for every golfer which diminishes the need for so many door prizes. This was also our first year with hole sponsors and we had a total of 33, with three of them sponsoring all 9 holes and one sponsoring three holes. A great looking ad was put together by Tournament Director Mayhew and it ran in the News Tribune on June 12 th thanking all sponsors and volunteers. Big Barks go out to all involved, thanks Dogs! PDD Miller's hole in one (HIO) on hole number two was registered online at the National Hole In One Registry by PDD Mayhew. PDD Miller was presented an HIO towel, HIO golf bag tag, and HIO ball marker hat clip all acquired by PDD Mayhew. Congratulations again, PDD Floyd Miller on your Hole In One! Go ahead and mark your calendars for Armed Forces Day, May 20 th 2017 for the 9 th Annual Tournament and plan on being there. PDD Miller spoke on behalf of the Fund Raising Committee and per his suggestion we will try to have the Hillen's come to our August Growl and explain what is involved in having them assist us in putting on a Texas Hold 'Em Tournament. We are tentatively looking at holding a tournament this fall depending on what we find out. Two pistols have been ordered for our next fundraiser and tickets are being worked on as of this writing. We anticipate having the pistols in paw by 1 July and word will be passed once tickets are ready. With all Dogs help we have the potential for this to be one of the best Pound fundraisers to date, so please keep your

ears open for details and be ready to turn to on ticket sales once we have them available. It looks like we will be able to secure a booth downtown during the Salute to America on July 4 th and of course the Detachment has the Millbottom Event Center for Independence Day as well. Please consider helping out at one of the venues that day, according to the Commandant things are looking pretty good volunteer wise at the Millbottom, so if you are not already volunteering there please consider helping out downtown at the booth. Contact Pound Keeper, PDD Alan Sanning at sfgactivities@gmail.com or 659-5069 if you are able to assist in the booth. Booth hours will be from 1100 to 2100 on July 4 th. No Growl in July: Our next Growl will be Saturday August 20 th Put it on your calendar with breakfast at 0830 and Growl at 0900. See you there!
