The STEM Family Fun Day and RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair hosted at the Erma Byrd Center Complex on Saturday, April 29, 2017 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM.

The NASA STAR Lab featured in the picture above was a very popular STEM Family Fun Day activity provided by West Virginia State University s Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CASTEM), during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair available to kids and adults located in the New River Community and Technical College Rotunda. Parents sit and chat while kids visit the STEM Family Fun Day activity stations provided by WV State University s CASTEM and Concord University located in the Student Atrium of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center on Saturday, April 29, 2017, during STEM Family Fun Day and the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair.

The Whale featured in the picture above was just one of the STEM Family Fun Day activities provided by the Concord University Division of Education, under the direction and guidance of Assistant Professor Lethea Smith, available to kids and parents to enter and explore located on the lawn of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex, Saturday, April 29, 2017. Professor Smith along Concord University student volunteers worked to set-up and give guided tours through the inside of the whale. Pictured to the left is the Straw Rocket Station that was available to kids as part of STEM Family Fun Day during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, on the grounds of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex. The Straw Rocket Station was an activity provided by West Virginia State University s CASTEM.

Bluefield State College s Melissa Haye, Associate Professor/Director of Radiologic Technology, explains the Sim Technology located in the Bluefield State College s Nursing Lab of the WV Higher Education Policy Commission s Allied Health Wing on Saturday, April 29, 2017. Kids and parents lined up to learn about Noelle (the maternal and neonatal child birthing mannequin) and other Sim Technology mannequins used to educate nursing students for practical work in the field of nursing. Computer-controlled mannequins that can bleed, scream and give birth mimic life-like situations to teach nursing students how to respond to medical emergencies. Concord University s ROAR takes a peek in the Bluefield State College Nursing Lab located in the WV Higher Education Policy Commission s Allied Health Wing, during STEM Family Day and the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

The LEGO Robotics activity station featured in the picture to the left was just one of the many STEM Family Fun Day activities provided by West Virginia State University s Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CASTEM), during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair available to kids and adults located in the Student Atrium of Erma Byrd Higher Education Center on Saturday, April 29, 2017. West Virginia University s CASTEM operates two STEM Education Centers, in Charleston and Beckley, fully equipped with educational equipment and tools including LEGO robotics kits, science labs, STAR LABs, wind tunnels, flight simulators, project-based learning curriculum as well as NASA and STEM curriculum. Pictured below: Crystal Bishop, NASA SEMAA AEL Coordinator and STEM Education Coordinator of West Virginia State University s Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics works with kids during the STEM Family Fun Day at the LEGO Robotics station.

Pictured above and below is Vanessa Godfrey, Bluefield State College Clinical Track/Lecturer of Radiologic Technology, explaining the inner-workings of the Radiology (X-Ray) equipment located in the Bluefield State College s Radiology Laboratory of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission s Allied Health Wing. Kids and parents lined up to learn about the field of radiology and the real-world equipment utilized when teaching radiology students how to conduct x-rays on mannequins as one of the STEM Family Fun Day activity stations during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex.

Concord University student volunteers work STEM Family Fun Day activity stations in the Student Atrium of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

Ninety-four (94) countylevel winners from Wyoming, Summers, Raleigh, McDowell and Mercer counties competed on the regional level during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex on April 29th.

Pictured above and below, Barbie Little, of RESA One calls out the first, second, and third place winners of certain science project categories presented during the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair. Parents and child presenters pack the Auditorium of the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center at the STEM Family Fun Day and RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair for the Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

The STEM Family Fun Day and the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex on Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Parent Testimonials All of the activities have been wonderful today! We would definitely come back! ~Melissa Anderson (Princeton, WV) I am an educator for Raleigh County Schools and they did a really good job! It has been really interesting! However, I would have liked to see more specific activities for girls. Other than that, it has been great! This has been much better than the County Science Fair where the kids just sat. This gives them an opportunity to see other types of sciences that they are otherwise not exposed to. I wish we did these types of activities that are open to all kids and to the public! Additionally, when it came to the judging of the projects, how do you have a race and not a first place winner in each category? ~Trish Webb (Beckley, WV) This is our first year at the Science Fair! Having the stations and activities for the kids has been great! We participated in the Social Studies Fair for four years prior at the regional, county and state levels; and, there were no activities for the kids, we just sat there. This is great and has been well organized! I appreciate it as a parent! ~Melissa Burns (Mercer County) I think it has gone really well! My son was a little nervous; and, for him to be able to come in and participate in all the stations took his mind off of presenting. ~Kristy Kiblinger (Crab Orchard)

The STEM Family Fun Day and the RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair held at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex on Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Parent Testimonials It is amazing! The kids have learned a lot! We just finished the whale and the kids learned a lot! ~Trish Miller (Beckley, WV) We home school! So, this is fantastic to have something of this magnitude to participate in that we otherwise could not do at home. ~Sarah Akers (Daniels and Classical Conversations of Shady Springs, WV) This has been awesome! We have been to a lot of different fairs with no activities; and, because our kids get bored, we almost dread participating in regionals. This has been a lot of fun! It gives us something to do! Kids will want to come here! ~Rachel Auville (Yeager McDowell County, WV) I am very impressed! And, thank you all for the science. We will definitely come back! ~Kristin Lindley (Beckley, WV)
