CONASTA Welcome Dear Supporter We would like to invite you to participate in CONASTA 67, the annual national science education conference of the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA). In 2018 CONASTA will be hosted by the Science Teachers Association of New South Wales (STANSW) and held at the University of Sydney, Sydney from 8-11 July. The CONASTA 67 theme of Spotlight on our future has been chosen to inspire all educators to focus on the influence of science on our lives. CONASTA 67 will celebrate the successes of science, particularly Australian science, and will explore the vital role of science in our future. As the major science education event in Australia, CONASTA has an outstanding reputation for offering high quality and stimulating professional learning experiences for science teachers, school laboratory technicians/managers and others with an interest in science education. Our delegates include representatives from all Australian states and territories, government and non-government schools, all years of schooling, and from metropolitan, rural and remote locations. The CONASTA program includes a world-class array of Keynote Presenters and a rich selection of workshops, engaging discussion panels, cutting edge science presentations and off-site excursions. Delegates also participate in a range of popular social and networking events such as the Welcome Function, the Conference Banquet, the Science Breakfast and the Stanhope Oration Cocktails. CONASTA also delivers a lively central Trade Exhibition area. This is the hub of the conference, and the area in which most meals occur, including morning teas, lunches and evening Happy Hours. ASTA and STANSW are committed to delivering a conference that meets the essential need for engagement, professional development and support amongst science teacher and laboratory technician communities. The vital role of Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths (STEM) in Australia s future is unquestionable, and the foundation of STEM excellence rests with Australia s STEM educators. CONASTA 67 will be a significant event that supports the professional learning of our science educators, which will in turn help our students. Join us in supporting science education in Australia by becoming a CONASTA 67 sponsor or supporter. As Australia s Chief Scientist, Alan Finkel, points out As time moves on it becomes increasingly difficult to decide who is and isn t a STEM worker. This highlights the importance of an excellent science education for all students. We look forward to working together with you to make this a reality. Please do not hesitate to contact ASTA if you would like to discuss any sponsorship opportunities or possible support further. Margaret Shepherd STANSW President Geof Quinton ASTA President

About CONASTA CONASTA67 CONASTA is the annual national science education conference of the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA). ASTA is a federation of the eight state and territory science teacher associations. Through its council structure, ASTA represents and supports the science educators from the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of all states and territories. CONASTA is convened each year in a different state or territory of Australia. In 2018, the Science Teachers Association of New South Wales (STANSW) will proudly host CONASTA 67. This will be the sixty-seventh annual conference of the Australian Science Teachers Association. When and where will CONASTA 67 be held? CONASTA 67 will be held at Univeristy of Sydney, Sydney from 8 11 July 2018. The conference will commence with a Welcome Function on Sunday evening at the Australian Museum, and conclude with a Farewell Function on Wednesday afternoon. Other featured events include a Conference Banquet, a Science Breakfast as well as pre and post conference tours. The conference also features an extensive Trade Display of science educational resources and services. Who attends CONASTA? Over 500 delegates (drawn from the host state of New South Wales, and from every other Australian state and territory) are expected to attend CONASTA 67. It is likely that some overseas delegates will also attend. Delegates will include: early childhood, primary, secondary and senior secondary science teachers; pre-service teachers; science and science education lecturers from the university sector; education and curriculum consultants; laboratory managers and technicians from all schooling sectors; science and education researchers from the university sector; publishers of science education resources, and suppliers of science education materials and services; and representatives from science-related professional organisations and associations. CONASTA provides high-quality professional learning opportunities in the field of science teaching and learning. There is no other national event that brings together the depth and richness of science education expertise in such a spirit of learning, discovery and camaraderie. The professional learning program The CONASTA 67 theme of Spotlight on our future has been chosen to inspire all educators to focus on the influence of science on our lives. CONASTA 67 will celebrate the successes of science, particularly Australian science, and will explore the vital role of science in our future. The program includes several keynote plenary sessions plus the prestigious Stanhope Oration, a wide selection of on-site workshops, seminars and expert presentations, and optional off-site workshops in the afternoons. The keynote sessions promote the excellence of Australian and international scientific and educational research, and will feature some of Australia s most prestigious scientists. The on-site workshops, presented by teachers, researchers and science professionals, cover a broad range of topics including: primary and secondary science education; laboratory technician skills and practices; new science and science education research; curriculum implementation and support; teaching resources and innovations. The off-site workshops allow delegates to visit some of the New South Wales most eminent scientific institutions, and industrial and agricultural sites to learn about the work they conduct, and the ways they engage with the education sector. Social and networking opportunities The conference provides a wonderful opportunity for delegates to build networks with like-minded science educators from around Australia, and to exchange ideas about science teaching and learning. The conference Welcome Function on the Sunday is a great opportunity for people to make new contacts and reconnect with old ones. The program includes the traditional Science Breakfast and Conference Banquet, as well as the opportunity to collaborate at Happy Hour drinks and nibbles at the close of each day. Accompanying the conference program are partner excursions during the conference and post-conference tours showcasing some of New South Wales prime tourist destinations. Trade display CONASTA 67 will feature an extensive Trade Display where science and educational institutions, publishers of science education resources, suppliers of science education materials, services and technologies, and industry practitioners can demonstrate some of their latest programs, innovations, products and services. Science educators are keen to keep abreast of the latest teaching resources, and we encourage displayers to think of new and innovative ways to engage with the conference delegates. 4 CONASTA 67 Partnership, Trade and Advertising Prospectus
