BOWLBY PUBLIC LIBRARY APRIL 2017 NEWS RELEASE Libraries are transforming. Whether it s about education, jobs or just getting ahead, the resources at your local public library can transform your life. Visit Eva K. Bowlby Public Library April 9-15 during National Library Week and find out how! Take advantage of the library's valuable resources, such as genealogical collections, materials in print and electronic formats, job seeking resources, English as second language, after school tutoring, citizenship classes, and many other creative and resourceful programs. The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is offering FREE American Red Cross Adult, Child & Infant CPR Certification training on Monday, April 3 rd, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation. Space is limited; please call the library to register at 724.627.9776. The Bowlby Library is also offering a second CPR/First Aid/AED Training Class on Saturday, April 15 th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This class is also free and is partially funded by the Community Foundation of Greene County. The Bowlby Public Library is hosting a Poetry Reading & Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m. Please join us for an evening of poetry; we will also announce the winners from our Poetry Contest (held in March), and invite participants to read their original work. Light refreshments will be served; this event is free and open to the public. The Bowlby Public Library offers Creative Crafting for Adults classes twice every month! The April craft project is a Photographic Display made from reclaimed wood. Cost of materials is $20 and is due at the time of registration; the two classes will be held Thursday, April 6, at 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, April 8, at 10:00 a.m. Seating is limited so register early by calling the library at 724.627.9776. The Bowlby Public Library Book Club will meet on Monday, April 17 th at 6:00 p.m. at the library. March's book discussion will be "Each Vagabond by Name," by Margo Orlando Littell. Bowlby Library's Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is inviting all local teenagers to their After-After Hours on Friday, April 7th, from 8:00-10:00 p.m. Teens aged 13-18 are invited to the Bowlby Library for Game Night. There will be Super Mario Smash Brothers, FIFA, Just Dance and more, plus card and board games to play! Teens can also bring their favorite game to Game Night. There is a $2 suggested donation at the door; please call the library at 724.627.9776 to pre-register for this event. It s an After Hours Spring Fling Scavenger Hunt at the Bowlby Public Library on Friday, April 7 th, from 4:00 p.m. 'til 8:00 p.m. Bring your family and friends to the library for an afternoon of spring-like scavenger hunt, crafts & snacks. Are you interested in discovering your ancestors? We can help! The Bowlby Public Library is holding a Genealogy Workshop on Thursdays during the month of April. The first class will be April 6 and will focus on The Basics of Genealogy Research. The April 13 class will be on How to Make a Family Tree, the third class held on April 20 will be Domestic Resources, and the fourth and final session will be April 27 and will be looking at Immigration Resources. All classes will be held from 5:30 6:30 p.m.; please call the library to register at 724.627.9776. The Children's Department at the Eva K. Bowlby Library is holding a story class during National Library Week. On Wednesday, April 12, at 5:00 p.m., children ages 3-6 years of age are invited to "Daniel Finds a Poem." There will be activities related to the book, as well as craft time. Parents can call the library at 724.627.9776 to register their child(ren) for this event. The Bowlby Public Library is inviting K-2nd graders to Coding Camp! In conjunction with PBS KIDS ScratchJr helps children ages 5-8 learn core coding concepts as they create their own interactive stories and games using PBS KIDS characters. PBS KIDS ScratchJr incorporates PBS KIDS media properties, including WILD KRATTS, WORDGIRL, PEG + CAT and the new series NATURE CAT. As kids snap together colorful programming blocks to make their favorite characters move, jump, dance and sing, they will learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively. The Coding Camp will run a few more weeks; meetings in April are Thursday, April 6 and April 20 at 5:00-6:00 p.m. Please call the Circulation desk at the library to register at 724.627.9776. The Children's Department at the Bowlby Library offers children a chance to be creative at the Library Lego Club. The library provides the Lego's, YOU provide the imagination! Drop into the library on Saturdays, April 1 st & 15 th, at 11:00 a.m., and let your creativity flow as you build any number of fantastic creations with Lego building blocks. The Children s Department at the Bowlby Library is currently offering Spring Story Classes! Storytime classes run through May 12 th, and are for children of all ages: Preschoolers* ages 3-4 Tuesday 10:30 a.m. ages 4-5 Tuesday 1:30 p.m. Toddler Share* ages 18-35months Tuesday 5 p.m. & Thurs. 10:30 a.m. Young Adults* ages 13 & up Wednesday 4 p.m. {a.k.a. Teen Advisory Group} Stories Under the Moon* 3-6 years Wednesday 5 p.m. Baby Lapsit* birth-12months Thursday 1:00 p.m. NEW! Bowlby Public Library Children's Department is offering a special story time called Ready Jet Go!, on Saturday, April 22 nd, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be themed games, crafts, and stories; this program is for children ages 3-8 years of age. The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library is recruiting high school students for its Teen Advisory Group (TAG). Teens, ages 13 to 18, who want their voices heard when it comes to teen library services are encouraged to attend weekly meetings. TAG influences library services, programs, and collections and is a valuable asset to the Library. The Teen Advisory Group meets every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. For more information, please call the library at 724.627.9776. It's Movie Night @ Your Library on Wednesday, April 12 th, at the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library. We will be previewing "Hidden Figures," beginning promptly at 5:30 p.m. The Oscar nominated movie is about three brilliant African-American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) -- as they serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history. FREE popcorn and beverage for attendees! The Bowlby Public Library is looking for local artists to display their artwork at the library during 2017. Collectors may also display collections in the Display case. The Bowlby Public Library will be CLOSING early on Good Friday, April 14 th ; the library will be open 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The library will also have a DELAYED opening on Wednesday, April 26 th ; business hours that day will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We apologize for the inconvenience. T.O.P.S. ~ Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a weight management support group that meets every Saturday from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Bowlby Public Library. New members are always welcome! The Adult Literacy program at the Bowlby Public Library offers free test preparation for the GED, Civil Service exams, and Drivers Licensing and Life skills. Also, any adult wishing to brush up on their basic reading and math skills can do so at no charge through the Family Literacy Department at the Library. The Family Literacy Department also offers free tutoring for school-age children during the spring semester. To make an appointment, or more information, please call 724.627.9776. The Eva K. Bowlby Public Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a company dedicated to driver safety and education, to offer free Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons, starting April 1, 2017. The new service includes free tests specifically based on the state s DMV materials. It is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that let users hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask portions of the screen for greater visibility on the driving practice tests. Joining the organization is easy and your tax deductible donation will benefit the library. Friends of the Library group consist of people who care about libraries and who are interested in

"Color Outside the Lines, is a program at the Bowlby Public Library for adults who may be interested in the latest craze of adult coloring books. Coloring books are not just for kids! The process of coloring has been shown to be stress-reducing, calm-inducing, and joy-producing - for people of all ages. The coloring resurgence has spread across the nation, with adults enjoying the creative and therapeutic benefits of coloring. We will provide coloring sheets and supplies to get you started. Grab your lunch and join us weekly every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the library. The Bowlby Library offers a free online tutoring database called Brainfuse. Brainfuse offers a comprehensive suite of online academic services designed to support many learning needs and styles. One-on-one online tutoring is available daily between 2:00-11:00 p.m. Brainfuse also offers a writing lab, study guides, and skill building resources that are available 24/7. Online databases can be accessed using a library card at www.evakbowlby.org. Looking for free music? Look no further than the Bowlby Library's website where you will find a link to an online music library offered by Freegal! There are over 10 million songs on Freegal and over 15,000 music videos. As a library patron you can download 3 free songs every week, and enjoy streaming music of your choice for 3 hours daily. There are over 200 genres to pick from and thousands of popular artists! Grab your library card and start downloading; mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems. The Bowlby Public Library offers a language database called Rocket Languages. There are 15 Language courses including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese Brazilian, Russian, American Sign Language, ESL for Spanish and Japanese as well as English. This database can be found on the library's website and accessed using a library card. Start learning a new language today; mobile apps are available for Apple and Android systems. If you love ebooks, try our new mobile app for Freading (available on Apple and Android devices)! There are over 60,000 titles available for simultaneous downloads (no holds!). Publishers include Algonquin, Capstone, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Open Road Media, Poisoned Pen Press, Skyhorse Publishing, Sourcebooks, Workman and many more. Freading now offers all the Lonely Planet Travel Guides and over 1,000 ebooks in Spanish. EBook users will always have content available to download! This database can be accessed at www.evakbowlby.org.

Bowlby Public Library patrons can access their favorite magazines on their mobile devices and personal computers by using Zinio. With a library card patrons will be able to download past issues as well as current issues from the library with no worries about late fines and overdue charges! The Zinio app can be downloaded on Apple and Android devices or access from the library's website at www.evakbowlby.org.
