HISTORY Information & Application 2017 2018 Future Innovators Scholarship Award Since its founding by six visionary leaders in 1975, the National Society of Black Engineers, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, has grown to more than 32,000 members globally, blossoming into a leading force in the lives of technical professionals and students on college campuses worldwide. The mission of the National Society of Black Engineers is to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. In 1989, a NSBE alumni chapter in the Washington, DC metropolitan area was established and officially chartered in 1990 with 20 members. The National Society of Black Engineers Washington DC Metropolitan Area Professional Chapter (NSBE DC) has been active in the region for over 25 years with a strong indelible legacy of excellence and dedication to our members as well as the local community. SCHOLARSHIP OBJECTIVE The National Society of Black Engineers Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Professional Chapter Future Innovators Scholarship Award was established as a means of recognizing and rewarding students who have demonstrated academic excellence as well as outstanding service within their communities. This is a merit-based scholarship awarded to students planning to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). $1,000 scholarship awards will be presented to students who NSBE DC feels will demonstrate the greatest promise as future African-American technical professionals. The candidates that have been selected to receive the NSBE DC Future Innovators Scholarship Award will receive an invitation to the NSBE DC Annual Scholarship Reception in May/June 2018 to receive formal recognition of their accomplishment. Recipients will have the option of inviting family and friends to this occasion. The NSBE DC scholarship is valid only for the recipient s first year in college. It is not renewable for subsequent years.

ELIGIBILITY Applicants must be African-American high school seniors residing in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area (limited to Montgomery, Prince George s, Howard, Calvert, Charles, Anne Arundel, and St. Mary s counties in Maryland; Alexandria City, Arlington, Prince William, Loudoun, Fairfax, and Stafford counties in Northern Virginia and Washington, DC). At the time of application, scholarship applicants must have applied for admission to an accredited college or university for a degree program in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or an applied science. APPLICATION PROCESS The NSBE DC Future Innovators Scholarship Application is available for download on the chapter website (http://www.nsbedc.org/) as a fillable PDF file. It can also be obtained by contacting the NSBE DC Pre-College Initiative Chair at pci@nsbedc.org or the PCI Scholarship Committee at scholarships@nsbedc.org. Please submit all student-generated materials (sections 1-5 and 7 of this application) as one packet. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for the scholarship. Should there be questions about completing the application, please contact scholarships@nsbedc.org. APPLICATION DEADLINE The NSBE DC Future Innovators Scholarship Application is due Thursday, March 2, 2018. The application should be submitted electronically via the Submit Form button found in the application. Electronic submissions: Applications must be sent by 11:59 pm on Thursday, March 2, 2018 in order to be considered for the scholarship. Supplemental Information: Supplemental information, which includes letters of recommendation and high school transcripts can be submitted electronically or mailed. For electronic submissions, the supplemental information should be saved in one of the following formats (pdf, docx, or jpg; however, pdf is preferred) and emailed to scholarships@nsbedc.org. Please include the student s last name and item (e.g., letter of recommendation or transcript) in the subject. Submissions must be sent by 11:59 pm on March 2, 2018. Otherwise, supplemental information can be mailed to NSBE DC at the address below. Letters must be postmarked before or on March 2, 2018. Funds will be disbursed in the fall of 2018. Scholarship recipients must submit an official proof of registration from their college or university in order to receive the award monies.
