POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION: Recreation Coordinator-Aquatics REVISED: February 2018 INCUMBENT: DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation REPORTS TO: Recreation Specialist/Aquatics POSITION PURPOSE: The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for aiding the Recreation Specialist/Aquatics in organizing and directing programming and facility operations. Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to outdoor waterparks, seasonal ice skating rink, and other programs as assigned. Work includes routine recreation-related tasks such as scheduling and programming, staff training, organizing, and directing activities and facilities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Excellent customer service skills and must possess a service philosophy which reflects the mission for the Parks and Recreation Department. (Daily) 2. Ability to utilize registration software to program activities for registration, run roster reports, communicate with current/past participants, run participation reports, run trend analysis for programs, and other items as needed within authorization level in software. (Daily) 3. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration to effectively supervise personnel and facilities involved with waterpark and ice rink operations as directed by the Recreation Specialist/Aquatics (Daily) 4. Ability to review and inspect waterpark and ice rink operations for proper functioning and safety; identify any potential safety risks or building and equipment repairs needed and report them to the Recreation Specialist/Aquatics or the Park Supervisor. (Daily) 5. Supervisory skills with responsibility for assisting Recreation Specialist in recruiting, hiring, training and ongoing development of all staff members needed for waterpark and ice rink operations as well as other programs assigned. (Ongoing) 6. Working knowledge of the principles and objectives of public recreation administration to be able to plan, organize and promote recreational activities, programs, and events as delegated by the Recreation Specialist. (Daily) 7. Good organizational and communication skills and ability to supervise programs and activities, effectively responding to difficult situations and complaints, make independent decisions to recommend changes, correct and analyze public concerns and questions and resolve in a timely manner. (Daily) 8. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants and the public. (Daily) 9. Ability to utilize a variety of facility and program-related equipment and supplies including but not limited to waterpark operations, ice rink operations and other assigned areas. (As needed) 16. Ability to work long hours involving an irregular schedule including evenings and weekends, subject to the extremes of outdoor temperatures and humidity levels. (Weekly) 17. Ability to exercise independent judgment in recruiting and recommending seasonal managers, lifeguards, cashiers, customer service staff and other qualified employees to the Recreation Division. (As needed) 18. Ability to maintain a valid (Class C) Kansas Driver s License and safely operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties. (Daily) 19. Ability to maintain appropriate certifications (AFO, LGI) for facility operations and training needs. (Daily) NATURE AND SCOPE: The Recreation Coordinator is accountable to the Recreation Specialist/Aquatics, who will direct the incumbent s work load. The Recreation Specialist/Aquatics reports to the Director of Recreation. The Director of Recreation reports to the Parks and Recreation Director, who answers to the City Manager. The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Recreation Specialist/Aquatics in the planning, developing, and organizing of waterpark operations, aquatics programming, ice rink operations and programming, and other programs as assigned. These programs operate within the Recreation Division and seek to serve the public by providing swimming instruction to youth swimming lesson participants, ice skating lessons for varied skill levels, opportunities for aquatic exercise and lap swimming, and providing a safe environment for patrons seeking a leisure experience in an aquatics or ice skating setting. The employee is expected to exercise independent judgment in routine tasks. General and specific instructions will be given by the Recreation Specialist with close supervision. This position supervises up to 200 seasonal employees on an annual basis. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, and results obtained.

Provides excellent communication and interpersonal relations to keep lines of communication with staff open, be available to assist, or clarify jobs and tasks. 2. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment. 3. Manage and coordinate the work schedules of seasonal aquatics and ice rink staff. 4. Aides Recreation Specialist in carrying out facility management duties. 5. Assists in the selection, training, supervision and evaluation of seasonal staff for waterparks/ice rink operations and programming. 6. Prepares, organizes, and assists in directing recreation programs/classes/events delegated by the Recreation Specialist. 7. Assists the Recreation Specialist in the development and training of instructors. 8. Responds to inquiries and complaints from the public in a timely, tactful manner. 9. Maintains personal and professional conduct that models appropriate behavior for subordinate staff and reflects positively on the department and overall organization. 10. Assists Recreation Specialist in keeping accurate records of spending and VISA purchasing, and operating within all budget restraints for aquatics and ice rink operations. 11. Assists with the ordering and purchasing of aquatics/ice rink supplies, materials and equipment with approval from Recreation Specialist. 12. Assists Recreation Specialist with preparing reports and maintaining records for participation and attendance, payroll, and inventory. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Working knowledge of the principles and objectives of public recreation administration; considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, aquatics operations, public relations, maintenance techniques, budgeting and accounting, and equipment and facilities used in aquatic/recreational settings. Ability to assist in preparing, organizing and directing recreational and aquatics programs designed to fulfill the needs of the community; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, municipal officials, and the general public.
Page 4 Skill in communicating both orally and in writing; supervising and leading facility operations and programming EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent and advanced education from an accredited college or university majoring in Recreation or a closely related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must hold or acquire Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification along with Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification, with preference to current certification(s). Required Knowledge: Knowledge of aquatics and recreation fundamentals; business operations and money control, computers and related software. Knowledge of safety and basic first aid skills, reporting injuries and risk management. Knowledge of pool operations, maintenance techniques and basic custodial guidelines and practices. Skills/Abilities Ability to schedule, plan, and direct aquatics and ice rink programs. Ability to manage upkeep of facilities. Ability to supervise staff through scheduling, training, and evaluating. Ability to manage a budget and show good business sense. Ability to produce programs the public desires that are within budget restraints. Ability to produce a safe, high quality aquatic experience for guests. Ability to interact with all types of personalities, attitudes and sectors of people Ability to work long hours and non-conventional schedules, including evenings and weekends.
