May 9, 2013 Truly Honored Brig. Gen. James Grant, Director of the Joint Staff, New Jersey Army and Air National Guard, left, presents the New Jersey Meritorious Service Medal along with service medals for Korea and Vietnam to Marianne Clark of Neptune, May 7, 2013. It was one year ago on Tuesday, when Clark s husband Army Sgt. 1st Class Dwight Clark passed away, making the presentation of the medals even more important to the widow. Twenty-five veterans received medals at the ceremony held at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel, part of the annual New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Day. EOD technicians having a blast at Warren Grove Story by Staff Sgt. Armando Vasquez, NJDMAVA/PA Fire in the hole! Fire in the hole! Fire in the hole! were the yells on a bright and sunny day. Then a cloud of dust followed by a loud boom. Those were the sights and sounds May 3 at the Warren Grove Range, as several members of the 177th Fighter Wing s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit conducted controlled detonations to render several practice bombs safe for reclamation. Today we cleared several 500 and 2,000 pound practice bombs, said Staff Sgt. John Hurley, the noncommissioned-officer-in-charge during the controlled detonations. On a yearly basis, they clear 20 percent of dropped or unused practice bombs found at the range, said Hurley. Once every five years we must clear 100 percent of the range. The Warren Grove Range, which is located in Ocean County, is a military bomb practice range. The range is operated by the 177th Fighter wing, and provides a training environment for several fighter jets and helicopter from various National Guard, reserve and active-duty units throughout the Northeastern United States. Consequently, the practice bombs that are dropped during these training sorties must be retrieved and rendered safe for disposal or reclamation. So yelling fire in the hole three times and with the press of a button on the firing device, Staff Sgt. Philip Douglass, and EOD technician at the 177th, triggered explosives that rendered the practice bombs safe. Top photo, Staff Sgt. Philip Douglass, 177th Fighter Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, fires a MX-22 firing device triggering explosives that render safe two 2,000-pound practice bombs and thirty-nine 500-pound BDU-50 practice bombs. Middle photo, Tech. Sgt. Raymond J. Wayne, standing, Staff Sgts. Joseph G. Coates, kneeling left, and Philip Douglass, prepare demolition shots for use to render safe practice bombs. Hurley Jr., both with the 177th Fighter Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, verify that the contents of the 500-pound BDU-50 practice bombs are concrete and not explosive.
