CAMP 586 monthly CAMP Meeting for January WEATHERFORD TEXAS The Camp s January Meeting was held on Tuesday, Jan 8th. The meeting led off with the swearing in of new Camp Officers for 2013. Following that new members were voted on and accepted. Next on the agenda was the reading and approval of the minutes from the last meeting. Vaughn Oliver delivered the Treasurer s report and stated that the Camp s coffers are now back in the black, which was of course well received. The next item of business was to discuss and arrange Letters of Appreciation for the 2012 Christmas Parade sponsors and to discuss plans to expand and refine how we market parade sponsorships for the 2013 parade. Compatriot Larry Martins work as head of the 3rd Brigade s Guardian program was recognized by a Certificate of Merit from the Bde. Congratulations on a great job, Larry. (Larry also has a message to the membership elsewhere in this moth s newsletter) Final arrangements were announced for Camp member s participation in the annual Ft. Worth Stock Show Parade and appearances in the Grand Entries of (continued on page 5) Page 4
various performances during the rodeo. The final item for the meeting was discussion about our participation in the Medal of Honor Pareade being held in Gainesville, or the Flag Dedication Ceremony being held in Palestine. Unfortunately, both of these events are scheduled to be held on the same day, April 13th, After some discussion, it was decided that we would support our Confederate brethren with the Flag Dedication Ceremony. GRA MESSAGE FROM our third BRIGADE guardian SCV Camp 586 Treasurer & 3rd Bde Guardian Larry Martin Greetings to you, fellow compatriots! As I sat down to write this article I was thinking about The Charge and its meaning to you and to me and I close my eyes and hear a fellow compatriot Ray Bell, of my camp who gives the most stirring rendition of it I have heard, he truly makes the words and meaning behind it come alive for me, and I believe for all who hear him recite it. To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, We will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier s good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. We know that when Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee gave us those stirring words to cherish, he was also telling us, the future generations that we, we must preserve and protect the last resting place of these hero s. As the Guardian of the 3 rd Brigade, that honor to guide the camps of our brigade was given to me and what an honor it is to lead our brigade to locate, document and then guard these graves with the dignity these men have earned. Over the last few days I went to several cemeteries and began the process of documenting them for the graves registration project headed by Mark Lancaster our 3 rd Brigade graves registrar and I also planted a flag on each grave I found to honor them on Confederate Memorial Day. What I found in most cases were some were identified as a hero s grave and some were not. And we, as a brigade and in each individual camps can fix that to honor those who had the courage of conviction to leave home and family to fight invading Armies and for States rights. Our mission is clear, each member of each camp needs to choose to protect one grave, ten graves or twenty graves, to register as the guardian for those brave men s resting place. (continued on page 7) Page 6
GRGREETINGS TO YOU, To keep the headstone clean, to make sure the grass is trimmed, that a flag flies over it at all times and to pray, as a Southern Gentleman and Christian, for the soul of this brave man. I served our nation as have many of you, and I have first hand knowledge it can be difficult in the field But when you read the actual history of what these men endured, when they had no food, no warm clothes, some no shoes. They had poor conditions that they bravely accepted and fought well for the State of their birth first, their family, the Confederacy and last for their brothers in arms, never thinking of themselves. And as Soldiers, Sailors and Marines of the Confederacy they became a true band of brothers. And that is my point! As members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, we too are a Band of Brothers. And our duty is clear,. We must find it within ourselves to preserve and protect these final resting places, and to teach our children the history of the South and to continue to protect these graves after we are gone. So please, go to the SCV Texas website http://www.scvtexas.org/,click on the NEWS tab and the Guardian Program and Application is right there. When you fill it out you will need basic information on the hero you will guard. And a map to the cemetery is easy to find on Google Maps, a hand drawn map to the grave and the GPS coordinates are truly important as well. A picture with a flag on the grave marker, what you have done to make it look good (cut and rake grass-wash marker with ivory soap and water, etc.) and how many times you will visit it to see that is stays in top shape. Three visits per year is needed I personally go every 3 months including Confederate Memorial Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the Birthday of the hero. The cost to you is minimal $10.00 for the first grave, $3.00 for each additional grave. As your 3 rd Brigade guardian I stand ready to assist you making the application. I am visiting the camps in our Brigade and will be happy to discuss this exciting program with any member. And since this mission and honor are very dear to me, I will also be working hard to make our Brigade shine in the Guardian program in the Texas Division! Deo Vindice! FROM THE Commander's DESK SCV Camp 586 Commander Jerry Walden I would just like to praise our Mounted Cavalry Unit under the direction Of Commander Calvin Allen and Lt. Commander David Wilson for representing the SCV and Camp 586 so well in the 2013 Fort Worth Stock Show Parade and for filling up the Rodeo arena with a sea of Confederate flags while riding in so many Grand Entries. We will continue to ride in these Grand Entries as long as the Rodeo lasts, so if you haven t seen this, you need to do so. We re so proud of all of you guys and the trouble and expense you sacrifice for our honored Confederate Veterans. We are currently working on developing and posting our annual Camp event Calendar. We will have the parades, State and National Conventions, Peach Festival, memorial services, family cook outs, Parties, business meetings, and meeting programs listed on this calendar. Since the programs are subject to updates and changes, we will need to repost it occasionally to keep everyone informed. This will be done by the Camp email blast list and in the News Letter. All camps in the 3rd Texas Brigade need to send a representative to our March 5th meeting to hear Rocky Sprott and Larry Martin speak on the Guardian Program. Every camp needs to really get involved in this effort to locate and document as many Confederate graves as possible. Larry Martin is already doing a fine job in our camp, (586), and he has been coaching other camp representatives as well. What better way to is there to Honor our Ancestors and the Cause of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans? Our February 5th meeting Program will be provided by our honorable Texas Division 3rd Lt Commander David Moore. He will be speaking on his recently released movie of the Gainesville Hangings. He may also share some information on his next movie that is in work presently. ( I think he may need a little help from our Mounted Unit in this one ). Hope to see everyone there.
