It is a educational session of approximately two weeks in which multiple local community business comes into the class room and instruct students on "real life". They learn about working, managing their paychecks, purchasing a vehicle and financing a car loan, saving and investing their money, renting an apartment and paying utilities, and about some of life's ups and downs including unexpected medical expenses and receiving gifts of money. Reality Check combines an in-class instructional component with a day of bringing all the knowledge forward and enacting it out in one day with a partner. Local New Holstein area businesses come in and set up tables and the 8th graders then circulate through signing an apartment lease, financing a vehicle and managing gas expenses, paying utilities and managing their check book to ensure that they do not have more month left than their paychecks--exactly like a "Reality Check". Thanks to all the local business leaders that support Reality Check each year and make this such a wonderful learning experience for the students! We couldn't do it without you!! You touch the lives of over 70 students each year and mold them into responsible members of our society. Reality Check instructional will begin May 16 and the all hands on learning day will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the New Holstein Middle School.
