The Georgia Southern Heritage Volume 2, Issue 4 April 2014 I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 1 From The Captain From the Captain Compatriots, Confederate History and Heritage month was once again a big event in the Middle GA area, as I m sure it was all over the great Southern State of GA. We met with the Houston County commissioners and they presented us with a nice framed proclamation claiming April as Confederate History and Heritage month in Houston County. A couple of days later the Warner Robins city council presented us with a like proclamation at their city council meeting. We know the Governor proclaimed April Confederate History and Heritage month in GA but our local officials are Confederate friendly and we appreciate what they do for us. Friday afternoon, April 25, th we always have 2 ceremonies and Saturday April 26 th we have 5 starting at the Confederate Soldier Statue in Macon at 8 am; from there we go to four different cemeteries where all Confederate Soldiers and Soldiers of all wars are honored. In between our ten and twelve o clock ceremony I went to the Caldwell house, which is an Antebellum house on College St in Macon. The UDC holds their annual Military Service awards every Confederate Memorial day. There were five awards given out Saturday and one was given to Mechanized Calvary member Sgt Roy Bell of Milledgeville. Congratulations Roy. We had a big turnout at Stone Mountain again this year and a big thanks to the UDC and David Dennard for heading that up. I also want to thank Train (aka Lionel Harris) for working the vehicle passes that we were forced to have this year, Col Stone for the money he donated so no one would have to pay out of their pocket, the Forrest Escort camp for providing the artillery, and the Soldiers for providing the rifle fire and suffering through the heat in their wool uniforms. Sunday, April 27 th, T-Bone and I rode down to Sylvester which is in Troop 4 and swore in a new Mechanized Cavalry member, Herman Williams, and promoted current Mechanized Cavalry member, Arthur Quinn, to Communication Sergeant. That will be another Comm Sgt. sending info to Lt. Bo for the event calendar which is now up to 60 pages. Compatriot Quinn has recruited three members from his camp in two months. If you don t have anything to do, then you re not reading the event calendar. The event in Sylvester (85 miles south from my house) was sent to us with only a day and a half notice; I sent a message to a few Troop 4 men the morning of the event. 1st Sgt Bama (aka Tim Walker) and Sarge (aka Ken Arvin) dropped what they were doing and rode to Sylvester to support the Confederate History memorial event and swearing in which was hosted by the Appling Grey s camp and took place at the Jefferson Davis county courthouse. Keep sending those pics and events to Trigger and Bo; let us know what s going on so we can get it out state wide. We ve been talking about a GA annul. As of now it looks like it will be in Ft Jackson in Savannah around the middle of October. A special committee was appointed almost a year ago for our GA annual, we ll put something on the new GA Mechanized Cavalry web site about it so we can get some input from all GA members. Wayne.Captain Communications Officer Compatriots, April has been a Busy Month for many of us. We have celebrated our ancestors and attended memorials around the State in Honor and remembrance of their great sacrifice. As we come to the end of Confederate History month, let us not forget that the honor of our Ancestors and the truths of their Cause should be remembered daily. Defend your ancestors and spread the truth of our Confederate Heritage. In recent weeks I have been working with the Communications Staff and reminding them of their duties as Communications Sergeants. Your Communication Sergeants are required to report weekly. These reports should include any SCV Camp events, Troop events, and local municipality events pertaining to our organization. If you are planning an event or have attended an event, please make sure that your Communication Sergeant is aware, so the Calendar will continue to remain up to date, along with the website and newsletter. We will be adding additional Communication Sergeants when and where as needed. If your area is in lack of a Communication Sergeant, please let myself or Captain Scarborough know so we can address the issue. Please coordinate with your Communications Sergeants with any summaries and photos of memorials you have attended. I would like to get segments from all Georgia memorials together for a separate page on the website, as well as a few postings to the Confederate Veterans Magazine. There are still many events coming up. 2014 is the 150th anniversary for much of Georgia's War history. Around The State in April Troop 2 Mark Hinson provided two photos of the Athens Memorial Day service. Over 400 vets interned there. Had nine Mech Cav members there and had a great lunch after.

Thanks to all that supported Confederate Memorial Day events around the State. I consider it an honor to stand on hallowed ground and pay my respects to those that gave there all in support of the cause. A tyrannical government over stepping its authority over the States and there people. Watching the news and current events, on the attacks on our freedoms and rights, we see the fight hasn t ended. Susan Hathaway of the Virginia Flaggers spoke at our Camp a last month and told us of the ongoing battles in Virginia to fly our flag. The battle goes on to wipe out the memories of our ancestors and we are the only thing in their way. I know times are hard and the economy sucks but these are the times we need to be strong and stand for what s right. Susan expressed the importance of responding in a way they can t be turn it into hate or use our response against us. She expressed consistency, never giving up teaching the truth. She has done an outstanding job standing up for the right to fly our flag and teaching those that only know one side of the history. Troop 3 It has been a busy month for Troop 3 and more events around the corner. We supported two H.L Hunley awards presentation at local schools AFJROTC awards program, supported multiple Memorial Day ceremonies at 7 local cemeteries and Oak Hill in Newnan, cleaned two local cemeteries, had our monthly meeting and supported our local Camp cannon with a crew at the Memorial Day events. We are looking forward to Old Clinton Wars Days the first week of May and Gettsburg in June.

We had a great turnout at Stone Mountain this year, every Georgia Troop was represented. As you can tell from the picture the Mechanized Cavalry makes up a large part of the crowd supporting the event. I think we had 6 or 7 States counting Georgia present. Thanks goes out to Kevin for paying the gate fees for all the Mechanized Cavalry Troops. This was the first year I can remember that we had to pay. Almost had to pay last year but after some a convincing debate they let us pass. We need to make next year even better to show the Georgia the SCV are true to our Charge in supporting our heritage. Above is the Memorial Day ceremonies in Newnan Georgia. Several members of Troop 3 supported this event at Oak Hill Cemetery. It was a very nice Memorial Day dedication to 268 Confederate Soldiers buried in this section of the cemetery. While in Newnan Oatmeal treated all to a mighty fine lunch at a local restaurant. Thanks for the great hospitality.
Troop 4 We had a beautiful day for the Memorial Service in Sylvester GA today. A nice dedication to fallen soldiers and brothers in arms today with some live music singing of Dixie and other civil war songs very nicely done. Honor guard firing rifles and cannon brigade firing of the cannon was exceptionally well done for a small group of dedicated men. A very young boy/man had the honor of actually firing the cannon. A larger group could not have done any better, very well presented. All Mechanized Calvary members that came today arrived safe and sound. Hope the return trip home was a safe ride also. Captain Wayne Scarborough and several others, sorry I have no names but do remember some call signs, bama, t-bone, a couple of others I just can not remember now but next time I will have pen and paper and write it down. We swore in brother Herman Williams into the Mechanized Calvary today, who also happens to be the Commander of our camp, The Appling Gray's Camp #918 of Baxley, Ga. Captain Scarborough presented Arthur Quinn with a certificate of promotion to Communications Sergeant. This was a dedication of the Iron Cross for Pvt. William Pilsbury of the 5th Regiment Georgia Company B. The dedication was performed at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus, Ga. The UDC out of Albany set up the program and the Stewart-Webster Camp 1607 and the A.H. Stephens Camp 78 assisted with the color guard, Rifle Salute and the playing of taps. Stephens Camp 78), Ken "Sarge" Arvin (Stewart- Webster Camp 1607 and SCVMC Troop 4) and Commander Glen Cobb (Stewart-Webster Camp 1607). A note from Logan Guest Troop 4... Several members participated at a Confederate Memorial day celebration, then headed to a fellow SCV member's property for a cookout and live fire practice. No injuries were recorded.

On Friday March 21, 2014, Robert Ballard and Tommy Storms of Troop 4 went to Ray City, GA for the Purple Heart ceremony. Ray City officially became Georgia's eleventh Purple Heart city Friday. A Purple Heart veteran who lives in Ray City was the honorary recipient of the town's symbolic Purple Heart. Although the color most associated with hearts is red, today it was all about purple hearts. At a ceremony outside city hall in Ray City Friday afternoon, the city presented Purple Heart recipient and Ray City resident Gerald Chason with a plaque, recognizing him as the city's honorary Purple Heart recipient. "It's a great honor. I'm thankful that the city is recognizing our veterans now."
Ray City will now have a Purple Heart sign hanging below each of the green road signs that bear the city's name as you drive into town. The signs let people know that Ray City has been recognized by the Military Order of the Purple Heart as a city that honors its Purple Heart veterans. Saturday March 22, 2014 Robert Ballard went on a poke run to help support the Red Cross in Valdosta, Ga. There were about thirty bikers there.
