January 2018 A Note From Mrs. Szmed Dear MOSS Families, On Friday, January 26 th, all families will be receiving a Re-registration packet for the 2018-2019 School Year. I hope that I can count on you to return your packet in a timely manner. Before Christmas, we began registration for our Preschool and Kindergarten and I am happy to report that those programs have a healthy enrollment at this point. If you have any questions about the registration process, please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone in the office. Catholic Schools Week will kick-off on Sunday, January 28 th at the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Mother of Sorrows Church. All of our students have an opportunity to be a part of the liturgical celebration. The Open House that follows the Mass is an opportunity for MOSS to celebrate the educational accomplishments of our students, highlight cutting-edge programs we offer, and give new families time to explore the MOSS difference. I am in need of tour guides to escort and share information about our school to the many families that come to visit during this Open House. Please let me know if you can help as a guide. It would be wonderful to see all of our families join in our Catholic Schools Week celebration. Special Catholic Schools Week activities will continue in the school the rest of the week. Believe it or not, it is time to talk Fish Fry. For those that are new to our school, our Fish Fry is our most profitable fundraiser of the school year and takes place on Ash Wednesday and the Friday s during Lent. The Fish Fry s begin on Wednesday, February 14 th. There are 7 Fish Fry s in all. In order for our Fish Fry to be successful, I need YOU! I need every family to commit some volunteer time to help with one or more Fish Fry s. When we all pitch in, the work gets done faster and I guarantee, you will have a great time getting to know other families and have fun at the Fish Fry. Last year, I asked each grade to take responsibility for providing the workers for one Fish Fry. In some grades, it actually became a fun competition to see who had the largest number of volunteers turn out and some grades chose a theme and dressed accordingly. Here is this year s suggested schedule for volunteering. If you would like to volunteer for another date or more than one date, that is fine. This is just a suggested schedule and more information will be coming home pertaining to volunteer jobs and times. PLEASE HELP!!! Wed., February 14th: Kindergarten and 8th Grade Fri., February 16th: 1st and 7th Grade Fri., February 23rd: 2nd and 6th Grade Fri., March 2nd: 3rd and 5th Grade Fri., March 9th: Preschool and 4th Grade Fri., March 16th: MOSS Faculty & Family Fri., March 23rd: All MOSS Our school has an excellent future, thank you for your commitment to Catholic education. Please be a positive Mother of Sorrows School supporter so we can educate many children for years to come. Faithfully yours, Theresa A. Student Spotlight: The Lego League Team Here is a look at the Lego League Team on the competition table at the Western Pennsylvania Grand Championship. The MOSS Lego Robotics Team completed its first season on January 12th and 13th. Braving the winter storm, these 6 th and 7 th grade students trekked to LaRoche College to attend the Western PA FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Grand Championship. During the competition, they presented their research project and robot design to the judges. The boys scored 10 th place in the Open Division s robot game. The judges were quite impressed with the team, especially since they were rookies this year. Pittsburgh is home to one of the international championship teams; therefore, it is quite an honor to rank in the top quarter of the division. Congratulations to the entire Lego League Team for a job well done. We would also like to thank Drs. Eric and Kimberly Bracken for taking time out of their busy schedules to coach the team this year. The MOSS Lego League Team: Matthew Jordan Brian Rodgers Daniel Bracken Ben Meyers Milan Seminatore John Beeson Michael Christlieb

Smart Lab Update Great news! We have received $140, 600 in donations for the Smart Lab. That means we only need $5,400 to complete our goal! We would like to send a huge thank you to all of our Smart Lab donors for helping our students learn and grow. If anyone would like to help us reach our goal, please consider making a donation, today! Contact the school office to find out how YOU can be a Smart Lab donor! Boxtops Winter Collection and Contest In addition to the many exciting things going on during Catholic Schools Week, we will kick off our Boxtops Winter Collection and Contest. Students may send in their Boxtop collections starting Monday, January 29th to their homeroom teachers. Please make sure that your students name, grade and homeroom teacher is listed on the collection. Boxtops may be turned in using the collection sheets, baggies or envelops. Please be sure not to glue or tape any expired Boxtops to the collection sheets as they have to be removed before submission. In addition, it is necessary to see the expiration date when clipping or attaching Boxtops. As an added incentive, the classroom that turns in the most Boxtops at the close of Catholic Schools Week will earn a classroom treat. The final collection date for the contest will be Friday, February 16th. The classroom that turns in the most Boxtops at the conclusion of the contest will earn a pizza party! Our "Boxtop Earning Goal" for the year is $2,000. Our fall collection earnings were $791.20. Please help MOSS reach its goal! Any questions can be directed to Tammy Nuzzo at Nuzzot@comcast.net. Good Luck!
