IRAN: DOROUD EARTHQUAKE Information Bulletin no. 5/2006 7 April 2006 The Federation s mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. It is the world s largest humanitarian organization and its millions of volunteers are active in over 183 countries. In Brief This Bulletin is being issued to provide an update of the situation and the needs of the on-going relief operation. The International Federation undertakes activities that are aligned with its Global Age nda, which sets out four broad goals to achieve the Federation's mission to "improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity". Global Agenda Goals: Reduce the numbers of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters. Reduce the number of deaths, illnesses and impact from diseases and public health emergencies. Increase local community, civil society and Red Cross Red Crescent capacity to address the most urgent situations of vulnerability. Reduce intolerance, discrimination and social exclusion and promote respect for diversity and human dignity. Summary The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and authorities are continuing the assessment while providing emergency relief assistance to the quake victims. A team from the Federation s Iran Delegation based in Boroujerd is working closely with the IRCS, the task force, UN and other agencies involved in the relief operation and assessment and sending daily reports to the Federation. While the IRCS does not call for any international appeal, it would welcome voluntary contributions or donations for immediate supply of group tents to be used as public tents for accommodating people who prefer to sleep outdoors. External cash or in-kind donations are being made to support the on-going relief operation in the quake-affected areas. The Federation and the Turkish Red Crescent are arranging for the transportation of 190 group tents from Turkey to the affected areas. The Federation s Iran Delegation is consulting the IRCS to determine the priority items to be procured with the grant from the OPEC Fund for International Development. The tents have been offered by the Turkish RCS and delivered to the affected areas with the support of the International Federation. With the announcement of a grant of USD 500,000 by the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Federation is now in discussion with the IRCS to decide what priority items need to be purchased. A team from the Federation s Iran Delegation continues to be based in Boroujerd, assessing the situation and reporting on the emergency relief operation and the needs of the affected people. The purpose of these centers will be to ensure information sharing and coordination among all agencies engaged in relief and rehabilitation to ensure that there is no duplication of efforts by facilitating a functional and geographical distribution of responsibilities between all agencies. UNOCHA is sending tents worth USD 50,000 to the area. The UN assessment team comprising of UNICEF and UNESCO representatives are gathering information on the educational and psychological situation of children. Six tents from Bam Department of Education and some dolls, blankets, shoes, cloths for infants, boys and girls released from the Welfare Organization has arrived to the affected areas for dis tribution. UNFPA has deployed protocols help to improve access and quality of reproduction health services in the affected areas. UNFPA s support in cooperation with MoH to the victims of earthquake, especially women includes psychological counseling, individual and group therapy for those who are suffering from post-traumatic stress and gender-based violence. WHO dispatched one new emergency health kit (sufficient for the medical needs of 10,000 people for a period of three months) from MOH country offi ce to Borujerd on 4 April.
