Grass and hay are growing and planting needs to be completed. Please be careful in operating equipment and have all safety shields in place and in proper working order. Farm accidents can be prevented and I urge You to be Safety First. One of our rights as Citizens is the privilege to vote for our elected officials and I urge You to take time to cast your vote on June 26th. Our Governor Larry Hogan, Comptroller Peter Franchot, State Senator Justin Ready and Delegates Susan Krebs, April Rose, Haven Shoemaker, and Craig Wolfe; attorney general, all incumbents, have been endorsed by Farm Bureau and have been open to discuss all Agriculture concerns and respect our voice in government. Many local officials are candidates for their respective offices as well as sitting Judge Richard Titus. Get out and Vote. Continue on page 2. Page 2 The President s Message Continued Membership in Farm Bureau should be a must for everyone involved in Agriculture as we are a strong voice for all things in Agriculture. Legislative representation, product information, education and member benefits are all important parts of membership. A member savings advantage program offers many savings on products, services, and insurance to name a few. We need Your Membership to continue to make our voice strong and heard. Please make sure You join or renew your membership. We Need You! The Carroll County 4-H/FFA Fair will be held at the Agriculture Center in Westminster July 28th to August 3rd. This outstanding event showcases many different projects, events, exhibits and entertainment. Farm Bureau will be awarding several scholarships and awards including the crowning of Miss Carroll County Farm Bureau. Help is needed in the sandwich stand as well as other areas and please volunteer and don't wait to be asked. A week of fun and competition for the many youth who have worked so hard all year to showcase their projects. The Governor signed the Agritourism-Permit Exemption Bill and the Easement for Special Occasion Events Legislation as well as the Cottage Food Products definition legislation. Your County Farm Bureau as well as the State are appreciative of your support and always ready to help in any way we can. I hope You have a safe, healthy happy summer. Our Spring Bus Trip was Wednesday, May 16th, 2018. Yes, there was some rain but we still had a great tour of Dorchester County, the Harriet Tubman Museum, had a delicious lunch at the Old Salty's Restaurant, and a cruise along the waterways. We have received many positive comments from our travelers. A special Thank You to the Rill Bus Service driver; in maneuvering through traffic for our safe return to the western shore and Carroll County. Summertime Fair time is coming!! The Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair is July 28th through August 3rd. The Miss Farm Bureau contest is Sunday, July 29th. Young ladies 16 through 19 years of age may enter the contest. Please encourage your family members to participate. Call Angie Bachtel at 443-277-6518 for details. As always your help is needed in the Sandwich Stand at the fair. Please see the schedule with contact persons included in this newsletter on page 4. Get your family and friends together and call one of the contact people to let them know when you will help! It s a great opportunity to collect Service Learning hours for students. Be patient, take your time, and practice Safety First in your spring and summer harvesting! 2018 Miss Carroll County Farm Bureau Contest Are you a young lady between the ages of 16 19 who has an interest in and appreciation for agriculture? If so, the Miss Carroll County Farm Bureau Contest may be the perfect opportunity for you. The Miss Carroll County Farm Bureau contest provides young women with the opportunity to share their knowledge of agriculture and Farm Bureau with people around the county and state. This is a very educational and rewarding experience for young women! This also allows the girls to meet and interact with other young ladies from around the state, where everyone can share their various experiences and knowledge with one another. There are also various scholarship opportunities at both the county and state level! This year s county contest will be held on Sunday, July 29th at the Carroll County 4-H & FFA Fair! During the county contest, one girl will be selected to represent Carroll County at the Miss Maryland Agriculture Contest, which is held during the Maryland State Fair! The winner of the State Contest receives a $13,000 Scholarship! Contest Qualifications: The young lady must be between the ages of 16 and 19. Parents or guardians must be members or become members of the Carroll County Farm Bureau. Should have an interest in and appreciation for Agriculture. Mandatory State Contest Orientation Aug 6th-8th at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium - Orientation is 3 days of contest information, and fun educational activities. NEW REGIONAL REPRESENTITIVE RYAN ZIMMERMAN Western Maryland Regional Director 717.398.7365 rzimmerman@mdfarmbureau.com As the Western Maryland Regional Director for MFB, Zimmerman works with the 7 counties from Garrett to Harford as both the liaison with MFB and as their local affairs representative. He works with county Farm Bureau Presidents to recognize county issues and provide leadership development training. Zimmerman got his start in agriculture while working on his family s dairy farm in Dickerson, MD. He is a recent graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he earned his degree in Dairy Science, with an emphasis on management. Previously, he worked as a National Sales Representative for CowBuyer.com, completed a sales internship with Alta Genetics, and worked on his college campus for Student Engagement and Campus Life. He also volunteered as the Dairy Judging Coach for the collegiate team at Virginia Tech.
