In July 2012 Patty Lascuola with the Nature Coast Volunteer Center gave a presentation on Disaster Preparedness to the Senior Companions. The companions were presented with personal disaster kits funded by the SCP grant. Patty asked if any companions would like to volunteer for additional training in a program called Neighbor Helping Neighbor. The aim of this program was to train a number of volunteers on more advanced disaster preparedness and then those volunteers would go out into their communities and train the County residents. Five companions volunteered for the extra training, and then armed with their new personal disaster kits, went out into the community and passed on their knowledge to their friends, neighbors and clients. The program was recognized by the Points of Light and Patty surprised the companions at the November training by recognizing each companion who participated in the program and thanking them for the outstanding job in helping to train their community. 2nd Annual Friends of the Nature Coast Volunteer Center & RSVP Advisory Counsel Every day hundreds of thousands of senior citizens some of whom live right here in our community go hungry.
