About the Program The MDS 3.0 is not a version of the MDS 2.0. It is an entirely new instrument that will be implemented on October 1, 2010. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), goals for the MDS 3.0 are to introduce advances in assessment measures, increase the clinical relevance of items, improve the accuracy and validity of the tool, and increase the resident's voice by introducing more resident interview items. Providers, consumers, and technical experts in nursing home care requested that MDS 3.0 improve the tool's clinical utility, clarity, and accuracy. CMS also shortened the tool while using MDS data for Quality Indicators (QIs), Quality Measures (QMs), and payment (resource utilization groups-iii [RUGs-III] classification). This program will be presented by NC Division of Health Service Regulation staff Cindy DePorter, MSSW, Branch Manager for the Quality Evaluative Systems, and Mary Maas, RN, MDS and OASIS Education Coordinator. This full-day program will concentrate on the transition to the MDS 3.0 from MDS 2.0. This new version requires the long term care facility to totally re-think how to address completion of the MDS with a different approach to information gathering. Changes to be discussed include structured resident interviews to give resident s a voice, and assure a clinically clearer view of a resident s cognitive and physical status. Each facility must be prepared to master the coding rules to appropriately capture reimbursement in addition to accurately assessing and care planning using the new CAAs (Care Area Assessments). New items will also comprise the QM/QIs for the Five-Star Rating System as well as the traditional survey process once those measures are released by CMS. Each attendee will receive a three-hole binder of the most current version of the CMS RAI Manual 3.0. Future updates will be available for download. Program Objectives Describe the goals for MDS 3.0 for improving tool s clinical utility, clarity, and accuracy; Use the manual to accurately code MDS 3.0 items; Identify critical areas of most significant contrast to MDS 2.0; Analyze rules for replacement of RAPs with CAAs. The target audience is those staff members who interface most closely with the regulatory process. Room temperatures are difficult to regulate in large settings so please bring a sweater if you are cold natured. Fees The cost to attend this program is $200.00. This fee includes a three-hole binder of the most current version of the CMS RAI Manual 3.0 (1200+ pages), breaks, and lunch. Members can be invoiced. Non-members must submit payment with the registration form.
