CSS FOUR conducted evaluation with Captain M. Williams as the senior board member. Groton, CT Pier 33 North POMCERT, Sound trials, and Torpedo Exercise. Arrived in Groton, CT pier 10 North. Departed for Mediterranean Deployment. Participated in IKEBATGRU TLAMEX 01-00. Arrived in Gibraltar for a port visit. HARTFORD began IKE Battle Group Exercise Noble Suzanne, a multinational exercise conducted with the Israeli navy. Arrived in Haifa, Israel for a second port visit. Tours to surrounding areas provided the crew with an exceptional opportunity to experience the wealth of history present in Israel. Departed Haifa, Israel. Ship conducted its Middeployment OPEX. Arrived in Souda Bay, Crete for a port visit. CO called upon the CO ITS GARIBALDI, and plaques were exchanged. Greek Naval Base Executive Officer visited boat immediately upon arrival with a gift. Five Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy arrived for Midshipmen Summer Cruise. Departed Souda Bay, Crete. Began EXERCISE DYNAMIC MIX 2000, a multinational exercise organized by NATO in which task group forces were established to "protect Greece" against hostile forces. Participants included Turkey, Greece, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, England, and the USA. Arrived in Corfu, Greece for a port visit. HARTFORD moored alongside submarine tender USS EMORY S. LAND. Plaques and pictures were exchanged with many local authorities. Local artistic and cultural events, warm weather, and good hospitality were enjoyed by all. Midshipmen departed. Departed Corfu, Greece. Encl (2)

Arrived in Palma de Mallorca, Spain for a port visit. CO, XO, and two officers were hosted at a reception held by the Navy League. The League was extremely supportive of the HARTFORD, and provided an outstanding welcome. 15 JUN 00 Departed Palma de Mallorca. HARTFORD began exercise SHAREM-133/TACEVALEX, a joint Antisubmarine Warfare exercise including both Spanish and American naval forces. The exercise provided all units involved with the opportunity to develop ASW proficiency and test various ASW weapons. Arrived in La Maddalena, Italy for Mid-Deployment Upkeep. Preventative Maintenance and corrective maintenance to ship systems were completed with great success, further enhancing HARTFORD'S operational readiness. 08 JUL 00 13 JUL 00 14 JUL 00 19 JUL 00 25 JUL 00 26 JUL 00 30 JUL 00 31 JUL 00 02 AUG 00 Six Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy arrived for Midshipmen Summer Cruise. Departed La Maddalena, Italy. Began exercise with Standard Naval Forces Mediterranean, an ASW exercise in which Greece, UK, Spain, Italy, Turkey, France, and USA participated. HARTFORD and FS AMYTHESTE were the submarine platforms for the STANAVFORMED exercise. Completed STANAVFORMED exercise. Conducted personnel transfer in Taranto, Italy, to receive Rear Admiral Munns (COMSUBGRU 8). HARTFORD conducted transit through the Straits of Messina, en route to La Maddalena, Italy. HARTFORD participated in submarine vs. submarine exercise. Completed TRAILEX exercise. Arrived in La Maddalena, Italy, for weapons offload. Encl (2)

Conducted BSP in Bermuda in order to pick up the NPEB in preparation for an Operational Reactor Safeguards Examination. ORSE began. Ship completed ORSE. 30-day Post Deployment Standdown period began. Standdown ended. Ship resumed normal inport operations and made preparations to get underway. Ship operated in local OPAREA to conduct qualifications and proficiency training. Ship moored to Pier 32N at SUBBASE NLON, CT. Ship began modernization period. Ship operated in local OPAREA to conduct subtraining, operational checks of newly installed equipment, watchstander proficiency training, and shipwide drills. Ship returned to Pier 12N NLON CT. Christmas standown period began. Completed Christmas standown. Ship deployed to AUTEC to shoot exercise ADCAP torpedos and to conduct sub vs. sub exercises. Ship returned to Pier 31N NLON CT. Narrative After Christmas stand down was complete, HARTFORD conducted a Weapon System Readiness Review (WSRR) and a short upkeep in Groton, CT. KARTFORD was underway in mid-january performing a Pre-Overseas Movement Certification (POMCERT) and sound monitoring for another ship (in conjunction with Submarine Engineering Operating (SEOC) conducted onboard HARTFORD). In mid- January, HARTFORD returned to Groton and finished preparations for her upcoming six-month deployment. In mid-february, HARTFORD was underway and commenced her deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. HARTFORD then transited through the Straits of Gibraltar and made a port visit in Gibraltar on 2 March. After a five day stay, HARTFORD departed on 6 March. Exercise SHARK HUNT, conducted by COMSUBGRU EIGHT on 14 MAR 00, gave HARTFORD the opportunity to participate in a coordinated exercise with NATO allies. On 10 APR 00, HARTFORD departed from Haifa, Israel to conduct the IKE Battle Group Exercise Noble Suzanne, a multinational exercise conducted with the Israeli Navy. HARTFORD'S next multinational exercise was EXERCISE DYNAMIC MIX 2000, in which ship's from Turkey, Greece, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, England, and the United States participated. The exercise was designed to train all participating units in joint naval operations, and task group forces were established to "protect Greek AOR" against hostile forces. ASW proficiency training was emphasized during a 15 JUN Enclosure (3)

00 SHAREM-~~~/TACEVALEX, in which Spanish and American naval forces conducted ASW proficiency and ASW weapons testing. In the same spirit of ASW, HARTFORD also participated in the 14 JUL 00 Standard Naval Forces Mediterranean ASW exercise. Greece, UK, Spain, Italy, Turkey, and France also participated. Finally, on 04 AUG 00, HARTFORD departed La Maddalena to begin her long transit westward back to homeport in Groton, CT. Prior to returning to port, however, HARTFORD first conducted a BSP in Bermuda on 23 AUG 00 to pick up the NPEB team for the engineering examination. After deployment, operations in the local opareas and the Autec Range allowed HARTFORD the opportunity to conduct proficiency training, drills, sub vs. sub exercises, and equipment testing for the recently installed radar system and new antenna systems.
