Welcome to Rochester and Convention 2008! Please allow me to Welcome you to Rochester and the 136th Annual Convention of the Firemen s Association of the State of New York. We know the Convention will be informative, exciting and an enjoyable time for you and your family. Fun and frolic will begin on Tuesday, August 19th with a Golf Tournament at 7:30 a.m., at the Eagle Vale Golf Club. Oktoberfest will be held at the Barnard Exempts Club. Applications for these events are inside. On Wednesday, August 20th, at the opening business session, our keynote speaker will be retired Congressman Curt Weldon. Weldon is a volunteer firefighter and past chief from Marcus Hook, PA, as well as the founder of the Homeland Security Caucus and co-founder of the Congressional Fire Service Caucus. Weldon has been a champion for the betterment of all volunteer firefighters in the United States. Our Training and Education Logistics Planner and Training and Education Committee have put together another great Wednesday and Thursday program for everyone. At 1:00 p.m., What You Should Know Today and Expect Tomorrow will be presented by Bob Athanas from SAFE-IR, Inc. At 3:00 p.m., Fire Service Leadership will be presented by Paul Hashagen and Bruce Newbery from FDNY. Then, at 5:00 p.m., a very interesting seminar on recruitment and retention will be presented by William F. Jenaway, Ph.D., CFPS, CFO, Executive Vice President of VFIS. Meanwhile, on the bridge over the river, several combined firemen s bands will present a concert, followed by a Monte Carlo Night from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Our Thursday, August 21st we ll have business meetings again as well as our Fire Service Community Achievement Award, Fire Service Educator of the Year Award and Teacher of the Year Award winners along with the business of the FASNY Association. At noon, along the Genesee River next to the headquarter hotel, the Rochester Fire Department will do a river rescue operation. At 1:00 p.m., Firefighting Concerns for Buildings with Lightweight Structural Components will be presented by James Kirsch from New Jersey. At 3:00 p.m., a representative from the State Insurance Department and Michael Kupferman, Office of the State Comptroller, NYS Assistant Counsel will present the annual 2% Tax Forum. The business session on Friday, August 22nd will continue with annual FASNY committee reports, Memorial Service and our most prestigious Firefighter of the Year Award and EMS Provider of the Year Award. At the close of business, we shall again have our Firefighter Games events. Do not forget the Annual Past Presidents Dinner and Installation of Officers on Friday night! Our Volunteer with Partnerships Convention promises to be an extremely informative and exciting Convention for all. The Monroe County Volunteer Firemen s Association local committee has done an excellent job providing activities that will make for an ideal family outing. Our officers, Board of Directors and Firemen s Home Board of Trustees are looking forward to seeing you and your family in Rochester. Remember the dates: August 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd, 2008. Dear Fellow Firefighters: Welcome to Rochester, NY! The Monroe County Volunteer Firemen s Association welcomes everyone to the Rochester and Monroe County area for the 136th Annual Convention of the Firemen s Association of the State of New York. It is our hope that you will not only attend the meetings, but plan to stay and see the many family orientated attractions in our immediate vicinity. Along with the informative and educational opportunities offered by FASNY, we are planning several events for your entertainment. We urge you to make your reservations for both your lodging and the special events early to assure your selections. Convention headquarters will be the Clarion Hotel with the Ladies Auxiliary headquartered at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. We also have rooms reserved at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The two headquarter hotels are connected by an indoor crossing and the Crowne Plaza is a short two minute stroll. You will find several outstanding shopping malls along with the world-renowned Museum of Fun, the George Eastman House of Photography, Letchworth State Park, which is the Grand Canyon of the east, and several amusement parks. It s a great area in which to plan your vacation along with the FASNY meetings. We sincerely hope that you will consider coming to Rochester and enjoying our hospitality.
