About the UC California Naturalist Program T h e U C C a l i f or n i a N at ur a l i s t P r o g r a m a n d t h e 2 0 1 4 c on f e r en c e s t eer i n g c o m m i t t e e i n v i t e y o u t o Pa c i fi c Gr o v e, C a l i f or n i a, O c t obe r 1 7-1 9, 2 0 1 4 f or o u r i n a u g u r a l s tat e w i d e c on fer en c e. Launched in 2012 through the University of California Cooperative Extension, the California Naturalist Program is designed to introduce the public, teachers, interpreters, docents, green collar workers, natural resource managers, and budding scientists to the wonders of our unique ecology and engage these individuals in the stewardship of California s natural communities. Coinciding with our first statewide conference, this year University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources celebrates 100 years of UC Cooperative Extension researchers and educators living and working in communities to solve economic, agricultural, natural resource, youth development, and nutrition issues. The biennial UC California Naturalist Conference provides a forum for presenting and discussing new research and developments in natural history, stewardship, citizen science, global change, environmental education, and interpretation for addressing California s environmental challenges. This conference is at the heart of our newly forming statewide network of naturalists, stewards, environmental educators and interpreters. Convening is an essential activity for fostering strong networks; therefore statewide conferences are the touchstone of this emerging scientific society for stewards. The California Naturalist Program uses a science curriculum, experiential learning, and service to instill a deep appreciation for the natural communities of the state and to engage people in natural resource conservation. We partner with local organizations to provide learning opportunities to communities across the state. Helping to launch this network provides a unique opportunity to foster a community of practice that will live on to steward California s ecosystems into the future. In two years, the California Naturalist Program has trained over 450 naturalists who have in turn volunteered over 9000 hours of service. We are currently partnering with 21 organizations, and five times as many informal science and natural resource management organizations have expressed interest in participating. Current program partners (map, right) include the Jepson Herbarium at UC Berkeley, Occidental Arts & Ecology Center, Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, Pasadena City College, Salmon Protection and Watershed Network, Santa Ana Watershed Association, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, Santa Rosa Junior College, Tejon Ranch Conservancy, UC Berkeley Sagehen Field Station, UC Hopland Research & Extension Center, and UC Santa Cruz Arboretum. Rapid growth and overwhelming program support demonstrate an incredible need that the California Naturalist Program is addressing. The California Naturalist Program plays an essential role in California s future by fostering a new era of citizen involvement in environmental science, management, and policy. We strive to break down barriers that many young and culturally diverse people face in accessing environmental education and workforce training opportunities by collaborating with institutions that work with our diverse communities. Friday, Oct. 17 Advanced Trainings & Opening Reception Saturday, Oct. 18 Concurrent & Plenary Talks; Poster Presentations & Reception Sunday, Oct. 19 Field Trips This is a unique opportunity to sponsor the California Naturalist Program s very first statewide conference and help build a new network of environmental stewards, interpreters, teachers, and citizen scientists. We expect participation from more than 200 certified California Naturalists and attendees engaged with environmental teaching, stewardship, and citizen science across public and private lands, schools, and informal science institutions. Please consider becoming a sponsor and reap the rewards! Program Venue Asilomar State Park, Pacific Grove, California } Co-Hosts and Steering Committee Hosting and organizing a statewide conference such as this could not be done without the dedication and support of many volunteers and organizations. Our program partner and local co-host is the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History I could imagine few other settings where people from such diverse backgrounds and ages could learn together, learn from each other, support each other, and on a more simplistic level-simply just have conversation with each other. They are people that would never have come together and been able to interact otherwise. 33 California Naturalist course observer The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History is a 130 year old institution that was born out of the Chautauqua movement in the 1880 s. The mission of the Museum is to inspire wonder, discovery and stewardship of our natural world. Partnering with the California Naturalist program for the last three years has been a wonderful addition to the Museum s educational programming, has increased cross pollination of volunteer naturalist groups and has been a great community builder by connecting participants to the local science community. Sharing borders with the Monterey Bay, City of Monterey, Pacific Ocean, and the Del Monte Forest, Pacific Grove offers breathtaking views and unparalleled recreational activities. The monarch migration to Pacific Grove is so inspiring that Pacific Grove is nicknamed Butterfly Town, U.S.A. Asilomar s rich history dates back to its origins as a YWCA Leadership Camp built in 1913. Known as Monterey Peninsula s Refuge by the Sea, and celebrated for its restored dune ecosystem, the state park is located on 107 acres of state beach and conference grounds. In 2014, University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources celebrates 100 years of UC Cooperative Extension researchers and educators living and working in communities to solve economic, agricultural, natural resource, youth development, and nutrition issues. Additionally, California State Parks commemorate 150 years of providing for the health, inspiration and education of the people of California. Steering Committee The 2014 Inaugural California Naturalist Program conference in Pacific Grove has attracted the support of many organizational representatives from the University of California, California Naturalist Program partnering organizations, California State Parks, and Certified Naturalists. Such local support will guarantee the success our inaugural statewide conference. Welcome and enjoy! 4
