Our Strategy Setting and applying standards of practice and behaviour for 690,000 registered nurses and midwives the largest registered care workforce in the UK is no small task. We have a significant and vital role. With a register that can change throughout the year the effective and prudent management of our income is a vital yet challenging and complex task. We meet this by making sure that we provide value for money and drive efficiencies across all of our services, a principle outlined in our Strategy 2015-2020. This strategy sets out how we protect the public by building on our strengths as a modern, effective and efficient organisation. We cannot work in isolation. We work closely with other regulators and employers, unions, educators, professional bodies, charities and governments of the four countries of the UK. This collaborative way of working allows us to extract the maximum impact for the resources that we use. Public and professional expectations of regulation have never been higher, which gives us the opportunity to be proactive and regularly review our services. We plan our income spend with accuracy, efficiency and effectiveness to meet the needs of the modern regulator we want to be. We have to acknowledge the challenging conditions that the nurses and midwives we regulate are practising in, particularly around staffing levels. The data we publish shows how nurses and midwives are responding to global mobility trends and how the workforce is influenced by external factors such as Brexit. These are just a few of the challenges, which makes working in the NMC fast paced, high profile and exciting. Where needed, we will adapt our plans to meet unexpected challenges. This dynamic form of regulation is innovative, forward looking, and enables us to better protect the public in a changing environment. 4
