University of Illinois at Chicago Sponsorship Packet 2017 2018

Letter from President Dear Company Representatives, The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Illinois at Chicago (SWE-UIC) is a nonprofit, multi-disciplinary student organization dedicated to the professional and academic development of female engineering students. Chartered in 1986, our chapter has proudly continued to inspire younger generations of future engineers in the Chicagoland area and provide ample professional networking opportunities for our members. Boasting over 100 students, we are one of the largest engineering organizations on the UIC campus. Our strong presence is the result of extensive outreach and on-campus events, all of which strive to embody the SWE Mission. Every year, we witness growth in membership, attendance at various events, and visibility in the UIC community. In the coming year, we hope to expand the following: Our attendance at SWE s national conference, WE17, in Austin, Texas Our impact on the Chicagoland area in outreach events Our resources for career development for both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to the enthusiastic commitment of our members, the active engagement of sponsors will propel SWE-UIC to further expansion. I invite you to be a part of this accomplished organization s growth in the coming year. More information on our events and sponsorship can be found in the following packet. Best Regards, Stephanie Sagun SWE-UIC President SWE s Mission Statement Stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, demonstrate the value of diversity.

Events SWEet Beginnings Date of Event: September 9, 2017 Budget: $3,500 SWEet Beginnings is an annual brunch that will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 to kick off the new academic year. Freshmen and transfer students are able to meet other female engineering students and faculty, learn about SWE, UIC s Women in Engineering Programs (WIEP), Women in Computer Science (WiCS), and other engineering student organizations and campus initiatives. General Body Meetings Date of Event: Thursdays at 5:00 PM Budget: $250/meeting Our general body meetings are biweekly and aim to provide professional or academic development for our members. At most meetings, we invite researchers or company representatives to be guest speakers and discuss their work or the current opportunities offered in their field.

Mom, Me, & SWE Date of Event: November 18, 2017 (Fall) Budget: $2,500 Mom, Me, & SWE is a biannual event that promotes engineering to 5th - 7th grade girls (and their moms or other guardians!) from various middle schools in Chicago and the suburbs. It is an all-day event that consists of presentations and hands-on activities related to the featured engineering disciplines of the day. Since Mom, Me, & SWE takes place every semester, each event features a different set of majors, enable to cover all majors offered at UIC s College of Engineering. Mom, Me, & SWE has shown substantial growth every semester, and we anticipate the growth to continue. Our first event in Fall 2012 had 7 girls, and our most recent event in Spring 2017 had the highest attendance yet with 45. In addition to activities coordinated by our outreach chairs, Mom, Me, & SWE also provides an opportunity for company representatives to be keynote speakers and for companies to sponsor the event with T-shirts or other souvenirs given to all attendees and student volunteers.

National Conference, WE17 Date of Event: October 26-28, 2017 Budget: $18,000 (16 students) The SWE National Conference is the largest conference for women in engineering and technology. It is a resource for networking with companies, seeking career opportunities, and learning about possible career paths and graduate programs across the United States. In 2016, we sent 15 members to the four-day conference in Philadelphia, PA, where many had interviews and received offers for internships after attending the two-day career fair. Informational sessions that run on all days of the conference cover a variety of topics, such as work-life balance, entrepreneurship, and current technology. The conference is constantly praised by our students for providing ample professional development and is easily the largest event funded during the school year. Graduate Student Panels Date of Event: TBD Budget: $400 ($200/event) One of Grad SWE s most successful events in the year, we invite 4-5 company representatives to engage in a 2-hour discussion panel, where they answer the questions from our Grad SWE committee chairs and attendees. This is a biannual event, taking place once in the Fall and once in the Spring semester.
