Catawba College Nursing Department NURS 3301: Transitioning to Baccalaureate Nursing Course Syllabus Creation date: July 15, 2015 Revision date: December 9, 2017 Course Description: NURS 3301 will prepare the registered nurse student to understand nursing as a profession at the baccalaureate level. Students will develop a personal philosophy of nursing through exploration of historical and contemporary perspectives of the profession. Emphasis placed on the attributes of the professional nurse and processes essential for delivery of competent professional practice, including nursing theory, evidence-based information, critical thinking, communication skills, and lifelong learning (Prerequisite: Admission to RN- BSN option). I want to offer a warm welcome to each of you. The course is designed to introduce the registered nurse student to concepts intrinsic to baccalaureate nursing education. The ever changing healthcare environment requires nursing to advance in our learning to provide excellence in nursing. My role as facilitator of this learning experience will be to evoke active participation rooted in integrity and mutual respect. I

anticipate the exchange of information and the learning experience to be a very positive one. Student Learning Outcomes: Following the completion of NURS 3301, each student will be able to: 1. Verbalize understanding of nursing as a profession, and discuss socialization of nursing issues as they relate to the BSN prepared nurse 2. Define critical thinking 3. Discuss levels of education, practice, and specialization within healthcare professions related to the delivery of safe and accessible healthcare 4. Identify nursing employment opportunities for the baccalaureate prepared nurses 5. Identify the social, political, cultural, and economic factors and trends that have influenced the development of professional nursing 6. Evaluate how nursing theory guides nursing practice 7. Develop his/her personal philosophy of nursing 8. All students are expected to be prepared for class and to participate in group and class discussions. Absences and recurring tardiness/leave early are unacceptable. In accordance with college policy, any student missing more than one quarter of the scheduled class meetings may be assigned a failing grade for the course. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain class notes from any missed time from classmates. Students are referred to the Attendance Policy in the Catawba College RN- BSN Handbook. Electronic Devices: Laptops, ipods, cellphones, etc. can be used in the classroom for course work only. All cellphone devices must be silenced during class time. Please note that the final grade will be rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, if your final grade is 92.5%, it will be rounded up to 93%. On the other hand, if you have 92.4%, your final grade will remain at 92%. Written Assignments/Late Assignments Policy: APA format (6 th edition) is required for all written assignments. Your writing should be clear enough that academic audiences outside the

field of nursing should be able to understand your points. Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior approval is received from the course instructor. Discussion Questions/Participation 20% Class discussions are an essential part of learning. Students have an opportunity to interact, reflect, exchange ideas, and expand their knowledge base. The discussion questions are correlated to the assigned readings and student learning outcomes for that particular week. Some questions will focus on your basic levels of thinking (e.g. knowledge, comprehension) while other questions will expand on your higher levels of thinking (e.g. application, analysis, evaluation). All students are expected to actively participate in class discussions. The discussions are a graded assignment and will account for 20% of your Final Grade. A grading rubric that includes level of engagement will be utilized for grading purposes. Each graded discussion (total 4) is worth 5%. Please see grading scale and rubric below. Your philosophy should be purposeful and meaningful to you, and can be a great addition to your portfolio. Articulating your philosophy of nursing requires careful thought. It requires careful thought because values have to be identified before putting them into a cohesive statement. What are your values related to the profession of Nursing? I suggest that you first list your values and then prioritize them before putting them into a statement. Your final statement may involve how you hope to make a difference in yourself and/or practice. A personal philosophy statement can affirm that your practice is in harmony with your value system. I believe that you will find this assignment a meaningful part of your professional growth. You can always update or even re-write your philosophy as you advance or change roles throughout your Nursing career. Your philosophy may not be perfect or inclusive but it s an effort to clarify what you believe. You can elaborate on what the experience(s) was like for you (e.g. how you felt, were your expectations met, how will you apply the new knowledge to your professional nursing practice). With that said, the purpose of this assignment is to identify an issue applicable to the nursing profession, followed by an analysis of the issue. The assignment will be completed in small groups. Identify an issue that is pertinent to nursing and is of interest to you. For example, you might identify the increase of adolescent diabetes in the United States, provide statistics that support the magnitude of the issue, consider the significance of the issue to nursing practice, and analyze factors that contribute to the issue, provide practical nursing interventions, and discuss recommendations supported with scholarly literature. Scholarly literature is peer-reviewed and written by an authority on the topic at hand. You will be expected to support any arguments with evidence, and your arguments will be best supported by utilizing scholarly work. Paper must be a maximum of 4 typed pages (excluding title, abstract, and reference pages), using at least 4 credible (scholarly) sources, excluding course texts. Describe the selected nursing theorist (e.g. introduce the theorist, why they developed their theory) and theory (e.g. discuss major concepts of theory). Students (groups) will complete this assignment as an oral presentation. Each group will be given 30 minutes to present their theorist/theory to the class.
