Initiatives in School Education One of the leading states in providing best infrastructure and facilities to primary and upper primary schools based on EDI for the year 2009 by NUEPA Strong school education network with 19,608 govt. schools and 1,518 private schools with government schools contributing 92% to school education Education through EDUSAT being provided to students of secondary schools Approx. Rs 780 cr being spent on primary school education under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan 117 Adarsh Schools for providing quality education to rural students Infrastructure in 351 schools being upgraded under NABARD project at Rs. 141 cr. As per all India Education Index, Punjab has been adjudged at No 6 place and as per infrastructure index, the State is at No 1 position. Slide No 32

Initiatives in School Education One of the leading states in providing best infrastructure and facilities to primary and upper primary schools based on EDI for the year 2009 by NUEPA Launch of the ICT program across all State schools to improve computer literacy under which computer education has been made compulsory from class 6th onwards. 5,939 computer labs set up in all upper primary schools with internet connectivity Approval for 21 model schools in educationally backward districts of the state by MHRD 119 schools are being setup under public private partnership mode. Establishment of Pushpa Gujral Science City jointly by Government of India and Punjab to inculcate scientific aptitude among young students. Slide No 33

Robust Higher Education One of the strong education network amongst the States with 13 universities Over 16,000 students enrolled in the State s 75 postgraduate colleges and universities A strong higher educational network with 55 government, 136 aided and 188 private colleges. 3 well established universities- Panjab University, Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University in addition to World Class University Amritsar and Central University Bathinda being set up. 13 New degree colleges in educationally backward districts GTT Pilot Project (Global Talent Track) being implemented. Technical Education Gaining Momentum One of the 1st states in India to set up a technical university Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar has more than 300 affiliate colleges and a strength of 2.5 lakh students 93 Engineering colleges, 36 B.Pharma, 134 MBA, 55 MCA, 06 B.Arch and 136 Polytechnic colleges in 2009-10 with sanctioned intake 33555 Engineering, 2070 B.Pharma, 9588 MBA, 3467 MCA, 270 B.Arch and 53105 Polytechnic. Private sector accounts for approx. 90% of the technical institutes in the State Growth in number of Engineering Colleges and students enrolled (2009-10) Home to prominent institutes like IIT (Ropar), LPU (Jalandhar), Thapar University (Patiala) etc. Live broadcast of lectures through the EDUSAT Network in 17 govt. polytechnic colleges and 5 Govt. Initiatives in Industrial Training 35 Government Industrial Training Institutes are being upgraded in various sectors and approximately 1800 students are getting training under Centre of Excellence Scheme. Upgradation of 61 Government ITI s under CSS-Upgradation of 1396 Govt. it is under PPP. Implementation of short term courses under skill development scheme in Government ITI s as well as in private centers and NCVT/SCVT courses to SC candidates in 51 in Govt. ITIs. Slide No 37
