Good Things Foundation: Trustee Vacancy

Trustee Vacancy This is an opportunity to be part of a dynamic social change charity, working at scale across the UK and internationally. Our Board of Trustees provides advice and helps steer the strategic direction of Good Things Foundation. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, ambitious and values-driven individual to join a talented and committed team to support the achievement of social change on a large scale. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience in being part of an innovative mutual, and to help secure the long-term sustainability of a dynamic social enterprise. Who we are? Good Things Foundation is a social change charity. We believe in a world where everyone can benefit from digital. Through our Online Centres Network of hyperlocal partners, we are supporting people and communities to overcome some of the most pressing social challenges they are facing - through digital. Since 2010 we ve helped over 2.4 million people to improve their lives using digital, driving positive outcomes from employment through to health and wellbeing. We make great things happen with digital technology, helping to tackle social challenges through digital solutions and community support. In the UK, we work with 5,000 community partners - the Online Centres Network - and with other national, regional and local partners to help the people and communities with the greatest need. We have offices in Sheffield and in Sydney, Australia. Whether we re delivering projects to build digital inclusion, designing new health interventions or researching the best ways to combat financial inequality, we believe that digital can help solve social challenges. We make a real impact by working with partners, engaging people through local support and ultimately transforming people s lives through digital. p2

Our impact We ve supported over 2 million people to gain digital skills since 2010 82% of the people we support are socially excluded We lead a movement of 5,000 centres and receive funding from government, charitable organisations and corporate partners Our behaviours We are... Collaborative Creative Positive People focussed Inquisitive These behaviours reflect us as an organisation and focus our work inside Good Things Foundation and our relationship with partners. p4

Our board Liz Williams (Chair of the Board), Director of Digital Society, BT Group Good Things Foundation is an incredibly purposeful organisation, determined to ensure everyone is able to realise the benefits of being society powered by digital. As a staff owned mutual, it s also quite a unique operating environment, powered by people to whom this agenda really matters. The same goes for each and every one of our brilliant Board of Trustees. If you are looking to bring your business skills to make a real difference to people up and down the UK, we d love to hear from you. Don t worry if you re not an expert in digital or in social inclusion, or if you ve not served on a board before, we d still love to hear from you. Laurence Piercy, Staff Trustee One of the best things about Good Things Foundation is the way in which it connects local communities with policy and politics. We believe in insight through experience. This is why we run projects in the way we do, but it s also why we are a mutual. Being a Staff Trustee helps me to speak from my own experience and connect what I do to the big decisions we make as a charity. Roy Claire, CBE, Culture Sector Professional As a Trustee, I relish interacting with my Board colleagues, the CEO and her staff on a wide range of statutory duties, including participating in shaping the charity s strategies and policies. Positive outcomes for the millions of people who benefit from the work of online centres are reward enough for those like me who volunteer to serve. Together, we are committed to our mission - equality of opportunity through digital technology - and to inclusiveness and greater diversity, not least at governance level. p6

What are we looking for? We are seeking to appoint an external Trustee to further strengthen the experience and skills of our existing Board of Trustees. It is hoped that our new Trustee will commence in post from Autumn 2018. In particular we are looking for people who have commercial experience and who have at least two of the following: Commercial acumen and a track record in generating income Strong financial management skills, including knowledge of quality and audit processes Strong networking skills and experience in the development of external partnerships across the public, private and third sectors Senior-level Board or leadership experience, including strategy, organisational development and business planning Political acumen and influencing skills Understanding of how technology and the internet can transform individuals, organisations and public services. External Board Trustees will: Be able to provide advice and challenge based on sound knowledge of the environment in which Good Things Foundation is operating Have a strong commitment and passion for the role of digital technology to deliver social change and for supporting disadvantaged people to improve their lives Be dynamic, ambitious and values-driven Be proactive, innovative and willing to draw on existing networks for the benefit of Good Things Foundation and provide new partnership opportunities Be excellent communicators, willing to contribute to our strategic direction. Diversity on our Board matters to us. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds. We are also happy to hear from candidates without previous Board experience, who would bring other relevant qualities and experiences to the Board. What do you need to offer us? We usually have four Board meetings per year, and the occasional Board dinner. Board meetings take place in Sheffield and London or at one of the centres in our network. We also meet with Board members informally during the year for advice and support on specific issues and invite members to a number of events and conferences. We anticipate that the average commitment will be ten days per year. p7

What do we offer our Trustees? An exciting, professionally developmental and challenging opportunity to really make a difference to the causes we support. Although this is a voluntary role, all Board Trustees are entitled to claim travel and subsistence expenses. We will also fund relevant training for board members. How to apply To apply, please email your CV, a personal statement indicating the relevance of your expertise, engagement and networks to recruitment@ goodthingsfoundation.org. The closing date for applications is 9.00am on Monday 17 September 2018. p8
