RYERSON HEALTH PROMOTION Health Prmtin Missin Statement Ryersn Health Prmtin prvides students with educatin, infrmatin and guidance in making infrmed healthy lifestyle chices that cntribute t achieving success in academic gals and lifelng health and wellness. We strive t wrk in cllabratin with students t discver their best ptins fr chsing a hlistic view f health and maintaining balance in their lives. They wrk with the Health Prmtin Nurse in the creatin, executin and evaluatin f the Peer Health Prgrams that we prvide fr the Ryersn Cmmunity. Overall, 62 students have been invlved in the Peer Health Educatin Prgram in 2006-2007. Peer Health Training: the Trnt Peer Health Netwrk Fr the third year in a rw, students frm Ryersn University, Yrk University and U f T came tgether fr a 3 day cllabrative learning prgram. We were als jined this year by students and staff frm the Humber Cllege Peer Health Prgram, bringing ur numbers t 120. This years learning prgram fcused n assisting students t discver an increased depth t their rle as Peer Health Educatrs thrugh infrmatin and discussin n the principles f health prmtin and student leadership as well as health prmtin thery. Students als had the pprtunity t learn abut as well as practice imprtant skills such as effective presentatin, managing audience dynamics and team dynamics. The feedback frm the students was immensely psitive and they enjyed netwrking with their peers. They are able t cntinue t d this thrughut the year as well thrugh the TPHN list serve. The students jined tgether again in January fr a mid-year learning prgram. This ne day sessin gave the students further pprtunity t practice their skills and reflect n their wrk in the fall semester. Students als enjyed the cntinued pprtunity t share with their peers ideas fr successful prgramming. Students were able t present their ideas t the grup and gain valuable feedback t assist them in imprving prgram initiatives. A new initiative this year was the intrductin f the TPHN Learning Mdules. Students were asked t cmplete 2 mdules ut f a pssible 14 n specific health related tpics that related t the wrk they wuld be ding thrughut the year. These mdules were created as PwerPint presentatins with vice ver guides, additinal resurces and quizzes. Having students cmplete the apprpriate mdule befre the learning prgram weekend allwed students t cme tgether with a similar base f health specific infrmatin. It als allwed the learning prgram t be mre specifically geared twards skill develpmental and cmmunicatin rather than health specific infrmatin. 4

Health & Wellness Newsletter Team Creates a newsletter every 2 mnths n a wide range f health and wellness tpics/issues relevant t the Ryersn cmmunity. This is then psted n the Ryersn Health Prmtin Website www.ryersn.ca/studentservices1/healthprmtin ***The team has dne sme prmtinal activities fr their newsletter, cntacting abut 200 students. We are in the prcess f installing a tracker n the website t see hw many students are reading the newsletters. 3 Editins are dne and psted and ne mre will be cmpleted fr the years end. Other Health Prmtin Events and Activities NEW! Stairway t Health Our first ever Stairway t Health Launch and Stair Climb this year was a great success! We had a ttal f abut 400 peple at these 2 events and gt a lt f attentin n campus fr ur effrts! The stair climb went s well that we have decided t hld it every year as part f Healthy Living Week! Students and staff were very respnsive and gave us lts f psitive feedback n the events. Fr the rest f the year, we are encuraging peple t cntinue t take the stairs thrugh media and utreach activities. Healthy Living Week and Health Fair This year was ur 6 th annual Healthy Living Week and Fair in cllabratin with the RSU. Althugh we had less traffic than last year, we were still able t encurage ver 600 8

students t participate. Students and staff had a chance t visit clse t 40 vendrs bth frm the Ryersn cmmunity and learn abut bth traditinal and alternative ways t chse a healthy lifestyle. There were events thrughut the entire week as well and included Stairway t Health, educatinal displays and interactive events. Walking Grup This year we have made an exciting cnnectin fr ur walking grup! Health Prmtin has jined with the senirs grups ut f Heaslip Huse t increase ur walking grup attendance and t begin t bring ur services t a wider student ppulatin. Bth the senirs and the Health Prmtin staff lk frward t cntinuing this partnership and increasing its strength next year! Overall this year we have had apprximately 30 peple jin us fr ur walking grup. It has been a very psitive experience, especially fr the Health Prmtin staff that very much enjys wrking with this particular grup within the Ryersn cmmunity. The De-Stress Zne in RBB 2048 NEW! The Peer Health Educatrs in the Stress Management Team have taken great initiative t prvide a variety f prgramming in the new Student Services space in the Ryersn Business building. The Peer Health Prmters have created a space in which students can drp by t re-fcus, re-energize and rejuvenate! Thrughut the year there was a wide variety f activities planned - all geared twards yur ttal relaxatin! The staff has been ding lts f utreach t prmte this free service and get students interested in participating. T date, apprximately 123+ students have jined us. NEW! FLU/Pandemic Campaign One f ur largest campaigns this year was the Flu Campaign, facilitated by bth Health Prmtin staff and Ryersn Nursing students. The students used a wide range f mdalities t educate the cmmunity abut aviding the flu, hand washing, pandemic flu and the flu sht. Strategies included psters, flyers, displays, wrkshps, class presentatins, kits t faculty and staff and a needs assessment. The campaign lasted ver 2 mnths and reached a large number f the Ryersn cmmunity. In ttal 1248 9

psters were put up, 701 peple were reached thrugh utreach events, 146 thrugh displays and 249 thrugh class visits and wrkshps. What s Next? Ryersn Health Prmtin strives t cntinuusly imprve its effrts t meet the health and wellness needs f ur cmmunity. With dedicated and creative student staff, we will prvide new prgrams and wrk t strengthening thers. Student invlvement and cllabrative effrts in prgram planning, implementatin and evaluatin has created a prgram that is geared twards ptimizing student health which will assist in encuraging verall student success and academic achievement. Next year, data cllectin, prgram evaluatin and cmpletin learning utcmes will have a strnger fcus and help mve Health Prmtin int the future f Student Services and Ryersn. Future Initiatives 1. Health and Wellness Prgram in Residence: Health Prmtin is partnering with the RAC and Husing t bring an active living/nutritin prgram t students living in residence. The gal is t begin the pilt prject in the fall f 2007. 2. HPV Vaccine Educatinal Campaign: Health Prmtin is partnering with the RSU Health and Safety Cmmittee t bring infrmatin abut the HPV Vaccine and thers campus wide. The first event frm this campaign shuld take place in March 2007. 3. Resiliency and Relatinships: Health Prmtin is wrking n events that will prmte these issues t students n campus. The gal is t implement a Resiliency and Relatinship wrkshp in the 2007-2008 academic year. 4. Faculty Teams: Health Prmtins wrk with the faculties is grwing! We will be cntinuing t wrk with Engineering, Graphic Cmmunicatins Management and Business as well as strengthening new cnnectins in Architecture, Cmputer Science and Cmmunity Services. 5. Eating Disrders Wrkshps: Health Prmtin has partnered with faculty in the Nutritin Prgram t pilt a wrkshp called Chclate Cvered Discntent which will run twice this winter. The respnse has been very psitive s far and we will hpe t cntinue these in the future. 10
