Director of Development Birmingham Contemporary Music Group Job Description: Responsible to: Responsible for: Salary: Contract Type: Director of Development Artistic Director Development Co-ordinator In the region of 26,000-30,000 with an opportunity to review after 12 months Permanent Main purpose of the post: Birmingham Contemporary Music Group is one of Europe s leading contemporary arts companies whose critically-acclaimed work includes concerts, tours, new music commissions and learning and participation programmes. The Director of Development is a vital part of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group s senior management team and has overall responsibility for generating income from a range of different sources to support the Group s artistic performances, learning and participation programme and new commissions. We seek a highly motivated individual to play a key role in the company, further developing a fundraising strategy to engage effectively with BCMG stakeholders: major and individual donors (including members of our development board and pioneering Sound Investment scheme), charitable trusts and public funders. Amongst current priorities is to take forward our Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) application and to work with our Board of Trustees, chaired by Christoph Trestler, to ensure additional unrestricted income is raised. A proven track record of delivering against ambitious six-figure+ fundraising targets is essential, as is an enthusiasm for sharing enthusiasm for the arts with donors and potential donors. In addition, we have recently set up a new Development Board under the chairman of Steve Saltaire, the immediate past Chair of BCMG. We are looking for fresh and innovative ideas to take this board from strength to strength and increase vital unrestricted income. Next season (2016/17) is the 25th anniversary of Sound investment, our pioneering individual giving scheme, and this role will play a key part in managing and growing this scheme, developing relationships and increasing private income.
The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic, ambitious and creative team at BCMG. The post is permanent and full time and reports directly to the Artistic Director and will work closely with other senior managers, the wider team and donors. The charity s fundraising target for 2016/17 is 620,000, which includes the already-secured Arts Council England NPO grant of approximately 300,000. Main duties and responsibilities: STRATEGIC Leading on the Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation application and other grant opportunities as these arise from Arts Council England Creating a long-term fundraising strategy to support BCMG s programme and infrastructure Working with the Artistic Director and Chair on the development of revenue funding Working with the Artistic Director and Director of Learning to develop projects for fundraising from BCMG s future programme plans Identifying future key partners and stakeholders including internationally Contributing to the advocacy of BCMG s mission and programme externally Contributing to the budget-planning process for future seasons Contributing to a company ethos which recognises the importance of reaching a diverse audience, and is aware of barriers to participation OPERATIONAL Managing BCMG s relationship with key public funders Arts Council England and Birmingham City Council, maximising revenue and project funding opportunities Raising core and project funds from charitable trusts Developing major and individual donors for BCMG s work, including running the Sound Investment scheme and BCMG Foundation Raising income via a development board for a Designated Fund (Momentum) supporting landmark new projects Raising income in collaboration with key partner organisations where appropriate Devising and managing events for current and prospective donors and partners Line-managing BCMG s full-time Development Co-ordinator COMMUNICATIONS Relationship and network-building with BCMG s existing/potential donors Engaging donors with the company s work as a whole as well as with specific projects that require additional funding Facilitating relationship-building between donors and the BCMG team of staff, players and Board Engaging BCMG s Board with the development function, by reporting quarterly to Board meetings and contributing to the general advocacy of BCMG s work Communicating internally, in particular with the Artistic Director, Director of Learning, Director of Finance and Marketing Manager, to enable the achievement of key fundraising targets GENERAL Representing BCMG on professional bodies and networks

Person Specification ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE EDUCATION/TRAINING: The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate sound relevant experience EDUCATION/TRAINING: Knowledge/study of music to degree level or equivalent would be a distinct advantage Fundraising Qualifications Evidence of Fundraising Training Membership of Institute of Fundraising EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years experience in fundraising across a range of areas including statutory fundraising and at least 2 of the following: Trusts, Major Donors, Individuals, Community, Legacy. Or equivalent relevant experience in marketing, business development or data management EXPERIENCE: Gained within the arts sector Experience of managing a small team Working with and developing a development board Project Management Experience of Trust fundraising (including PR, Marketing and social media
applications and reporting) Reporting to the board of an organisation Evidence of ability to communicate effectively including through letters and marketing materials Organising donor events/guest lists and research to create invitation lists Track record of successfully managing individual relationships through face to face, email and telephone communication Successful track record of securing new donations Experience of managing budgets or overseeing financial tracking systems Have previously worked with a CRM database or have equivalent experience of managing data through IT systems SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES: Ability to articulate BCMG s artistic output to potential donors Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication and copywriting skills SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES: Experience of ThankQ, Raiser s Edge or Tessitura or similar CRM systems Ability to manipulate data within a CRM database Experience of identifying/initiating new opportunities to maximise fundraising income Excellent data management skills The ability to work with supporters, manage their needs and expectations Excellent administrative and organisational skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel Good working knowledge of IT programmes, including CRM databases PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: A passion for the arts Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively on many levels; and the confidence to discuss BCMG s work and aspirations with potential and existing PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: An interest in and open-mindedness towards contemporary music
