Press Release October 8, 2015 Jamia signs MoU with the Indian Navy Adding a new dimension to its educational profile, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), a Central University by an Act of Parliament, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the esteemed Indian Navy to provide vertical and academic mobility to its personnel and officers. The MoU entered into by the two institutions records mutual intent for academic collaboration between JMI and Indian Navy for academic and technical advancement and progression of Indian Navy personnel and officers. The Indian Navy conducts ab-initio/in-service training programmes for its personnel at training centres across the country. The recognition of the in-service training and courses following credit determination would make Indian Navy personnel and officers eligible for admission in JMI for various academic programmes. A Joint-Equivalence Committee would be involved in credit determination for all theoretical and practical components of academic-cum-training programmes in the Indian Navy. The admission to Jamia courses would be through the Centre for Distance and Open Learning that will lead to award of degrees on fulfillment of statutory requirements. Naval Personnel who superannuate from naval service in their early thirties will have an opportunity to begin second-innings of active service in national life on acquisition of undergraduate degrees. The MoU was signed by Prof. Shahid Ashraf, Registrar, JMI and Commodore Ghanashyam Ojha, Principal Director (Naval Education) IHQ MoD (Navy), New Delhi in the presence of Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI, Vice-Admiral A.R. Karve (AVSM) and senior academics and officials from JMI and Indian Navy. Elaborating on the need for such an agreement Vice Admiral A.R. Karve (AVSM), Indian Navy observed that it was a historic moment for the Indian Navy to enter into collaboration with JMI which has a distinguished history with regard to nation building and burgeoning reputation as institution of excellence. He thanked Jamia for its proactive engagement with the Indian Navy to make the collaboration a reality under the able leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, JMI. Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI stated that it was a proud moment for the university to be associated with Indian Navy that offers selfless service to the country by

safeguarding its boundaries and providing critical support in the domain of defence. He felt that both the institutions could work together to mutually benefit both Indian Navy personnel and Jamia students. Together, they could also explore joint collaborative projects that would enable Indian Navy to share its expertise and technical know-how with Jamia students and reciprocally benefit from university s resources and competencies for promotion of vertical and academic mobility of Indian Navy personnel and officers. That was the least Jamia could offer to the Indian Navy that makes huge sacrifices for the nation, he added. He expressed his desire to support Indian Navy in all possible ways for strengthening their academic and training programmes through university generated knowledge and research. He hoped that Jamia would have a large number of disciplined and dedicated alumni with naval background who would contribute to the growth of the nation. Following the signing of the MoU, the Indian Navy presented a Memento to Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI marking the beginning of a new relationship between the two institutions. Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI reciprocated through exchange of tokens of remembrance. Media Coordinator Jamia Millia Islamia Attachment: Pictures
