PACKING LIST You are encouraged to pack for just six weeks. This means limit yourself to two suitcases and a backpack and save the rest of your belongings for when you move back to campus for the fall semester. More specific recommendations can be found below. Personal Supplies Clothes (including warm clothes since nights can be chilly) Bed sheets (extra-long twin, bed is 80" x 36") Towels, shower basket and toiletries, shower shoes Hangers, iron, laundry basket, detergent Laptop Alarm clock Any personal decorations Important Documents Student Identification Number (SID) CalNet Log-in and Passphrase Passport, Driver's License, or any state-issued ID card Social Security Number Important medical documents (health insurance card, prescriptions, immunization history, etc.) Any documents you have been asked to submit in person (proof of citizenship, disability documentation, etc.) 3
PACKING TIPS Not-to-Bring Items Residence hall policy prohibits cooki ng equipment, candles, flamelit lamps, halogen lamps, waterbeds, pets, weapons of any kind, or illegal drugs. If you require a refrigerator or microwave for medical or religious observ ance purposes, pl ease see below for additional information. Refrigerators/Microwaves formedical or Religious Observance Purposes Students who require a refrigerator or microw ave unit for a medical condition or holiday observance are responsible for renting a unit directly from College Products. You can order them online. They will be placed on your office before you move in. Computers Scholars will have access to on-site computing facilities and limited printing privileges. However, they are recommended to bring their own computing devices for maximum convenience. Cars and Bikes All scholars will receive a local bus pass, so cars are not recommended, given very limited parking. Bike storage is not available, but scholars can choose to store a bike in their room. 4
GETTING TO CAL By Car From Interstate 80 (either direction) Take the Ash by Exit. Drive two miles east to Telegraph Avenue, turn left, drive one mile to Channing Way, turn right, drive 1½ blocks to the Underhill Parking Structure. From Highway 24 (East) Take the Berkeley Exit, which turns into Tunnel Road/Ashby Avenue. Drive west on Ash by, turn right on College Avenue, drive one mile to Channing Way, turn left, drive ½ block to the Underhill Parking Structure. By Plane Booking Your Flights We strongly recommend flying into Oakland instead of San Francisco, as it is closer to campus. Coming to Berkeley Bridge scholars must be on campus by 7am on Wednesday, June 22. As such, scholars who live outside of the Bay Area are encouraged to arrive the day before. Returning home Select a flight that departs between Friday, August 5 at 7pm and Saturday, August 6 at 12pm. Shuttles from Airports Airport shuttles (e.g. Bay Porter Express, City Express Sh uttle, Super Shuttle) cost between $25-55, depending on distance and company. Most require reservations made 24-48 hours in advance. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) From the Oakland or San Francisco Airport, take BART to the Downtown Berkeley station ($8.50 from Oakland, $9.25 from San Francisco). Then, take AC Transit bus #51B eastbound to Durant/Dana ($2.10). 5
By Train The Berkeley Amtrak station is only a few miles from the Cal campus. From this station, take the AC Transit bus #51B eastbound to Durant/Dana ($2.10). By BART BART is the Bay Area's subway system. The campus is within walking distance from the Downtown Berkeley station. By Bus AC Transit Take AC Transit bus #1, #1R, #49, #51B, #52, or #F to Durant/Dana, or to Bancroft/Telegraph and walk one block south to Durant/Telegraph ($2.10). Bolt Bus or Megabus Take Bolt Bus or Megabus to Oakland at Mandela/7th. Walk one block to the West Oakland BART station, take BART to the Downtown Berkeley station ($1.95). Greyhound Take Greyhound to Oakland at San Pablo/21st. Walk one block to San Pablo/W. Grand, take the AC Transit bus #72/72M/72R northbound to University/San Pablo, then transfer to the #51B eastbound to Durant/Dana ($2.10 per bus). Golden Bear Express The Golden Bear Express is a wonderful opportunity for select students from Southern California to ride to Berkeley together to attend CalSO. Eligible students must be from Southern California and be Pell Grant, EOP,Summer Bridge, or AB 540 students. To sign up, contact CalSO. 6
PARKING/MOVE-IN Arrival All Bridge scholars must be on campus by 7AM on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Scholar athletes are required to attend an additional one-day orientation on Tuesday, June 21st. Early Arrival International and out-of-state scholars may choose to arrive as early as Monday, June 20 th for an additional fee of $25 per day. Check-in for early move in is between 7-11AM at the Unit 3 Administrative Office. Parking for Move-In Park at the Underhill Parking Structure on Channing Way (between College and Bowditch). Purchase a $10 daily permit, and place it on the card dashboard to avoid receiving a parking ticket. (We strongly recommend parking first and walking to check-in. Once you have your room key, you can borrow one of our carts to shuttle your belongi ngs. Please follow all instructions provided to you from the CalSO program regarding your arrival to campus, including the Golden Bear Express). Check-in Location Check-in takes pl ace on the Unit 3 Volleyball Court, located between Priestley and Spens-Black Halls. 7 Check-in Time Check-in occurs from 7-8am. We urge you to arrive as close to 7am as possible, since you have limited time to drop off your belongings before your first required activity.
CalSO ORIENTATION June 22-23, 2016 Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) serves as an introduction to Cal for incoming students and their parents or adult guests. All participants will have a CalSO Leader, a current student who is trained to assist throughout the orientation process. In addition to learning from current students, participants will hear from a variety of campus representatives, engage in meaningful discussions, and begin to navigate the campus. During CalSO, students will accomplish the following: Register for Fall classes Befriend students in their incoming class Learn about their academic program and various student resources Discover opportunities for involvement around campus Explore the campus and its rich history and traditions Parents and adult guests will also greatly benefit from CalSO. They will: Learn about important University resources Hear from representatives from Cal Parents and learn how to get involved in the organization Discuss the transition families may experience as the student comes to UC Berkeley Meet fellow parents of new students and begin to build their Cal Bear network 8
SUMMER BRIDGE ORIENTATION June 23-24, 2016 Following CalSO Orientation, Summer Bridge Orientation further introduces scholars to the structure and rigor of the research university. Through interactive workshop activities and presentations, scholars will acquire the tools and strategies to navigate at Cal and Make the Golden Bear Leap to Success! During Summer Bridge Orientation, scholars will accomplish the following: Register for Summer Bridge classes Mingle with fellow Bridge scholars Meet faculty Learn about financial literacy and academic success strategies Pick up textbooks and supplies 9
