OTHERS RATHER THAN SELF APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED FROM FEBRUARY 1, 2018 MARCH 31, 2018 What is the Scholarship Achievement Award? The Lilies of the Valley Chapter was formed in 1994. It is one of six active chapters of the Young Women s Christian League, Incorporated, which was founded in Richmond, Virginia by twelve young women in 1959. Phyllis Allen Taylor, one of the twelve League founders, was also this chapter s first advisor. The League s motto is Others Rather Than Self. The Lilies of the Valley Chapter is pleased to offer two different achievement awards. One award is named for the chapter; the other is named for the chapter s first advisor, Phyllis Allen Taylor. Both awards are to assist students who demonstrate a financial need and academic achievement. With our motto of Others Rather Than Self in mind, we endeavor to support others efforts to pursue higher education and provide scholarship assistance to students based on need. Who administers the Scholarship Achievement Fund? The Fund is administered by the Lilies of the Valley Chapter Scholarship Committee. Who selects the recipients? The Lilies of the Valley Chapter Scholarship Committee reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the Lilies of the Valley Chapter Evaluation Committee who makes the final selection. An in-person interview with an applicant may be requested, in order to make a final selection. How many scholarships are awarded? During the 2018/2019 fiscal year, there will be two $500 scholarships awarded from the chapter fund and one $500 scholarship awarded from the Phyllis Allen Taylor fund for a total of three $500 scholarships. The scholarships are a one-time, once-ayear award. This year, [additional] financial support may [also] be available for current scholarship recipient(s). How may the scholarships be used? Upon submission of evidence that a student is enrolled in a post-secondary program for credit, the funds will be disbursed and may be used to help defray the costs of college tuition, fees, books, or other educational expenses. When will the 2018 scholarships be awarded? The scholarships will be awarded in the month of May 2018. The funds will be disbursed by September 2018, or upon proof of enrollment.
Who is eligible for the scholarship? The scholarship funds are available to students who meet the following criteria: Are at least a high school senior, enrolled in a GED or other alternative education program, or are recent graduates/ged recipients. Are enrolled in or hold a letter of acceptance to an accredited college, university or vocational school. Scholarship applications are only considered after formal acceptance to a program has been made. Can demonstrate a genuine need for these funds by submitting a Student Aid Report (SAR) which includes his/her FAFSA information. Have at least a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA). How do students apply? Applicants must submit a: 1) Completed application form (with essay attached) 2) School transcript 3) Minimum of one letter of recommendation (from a teacher, counselor, or other adult who can speak to the applicant s qualifications and experiences) 4) Student Aid Report (SAR) which includes FAFSA information How do students obtain a scholarship application? Applications are available through high school guidance counselors, university admissions, and sisters of the Lilies of the Valley Chapter. When is the deadline for the 2018 applications? Submissions are accepted by mail between February 1, 2018 and March 31, 2018. Applications along with the supporting documents must have a postmark no later than the March 31, 2018 deadline.
