Introductions made around the table, and the sign-in sheet passed. The agenda approved as presented after a motion made by Joni Simpson. Second by Andrea Wade to approve the agenda. After a review of the April 12, 2017 minutes, a motion made by Joni Simpson to approve the minutes with corrections, which was seconded by Andrea Wade. The minutes of April 12, 2017 were approved. PUBLIC COMMENT ON NON-AGENDA ITEMS 1. None. INTRODUCTIONS 1. Andrea Gelvin Health Science Instructor 2. Rebecca Bruntz Foundation Health 3. Joni Simpson CTE College and Career Coordinator 4. Status of State DEED staffing discussed as it pertains to Perkins grant. a. Caliber of CTE and Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) teachers highlighted. 2. CTE districtwide course overview: a. Tech Prep course offerings discussed. b. Intro to Trades courses and STA discussed. i. Applications to be distributed in November.

OLD BUSINESS ii. Wendell Whistler s contribution to CTEAC and FNSBSD students noted. c. CNA course discussed. 1. CTE Curriculum Adoption: a. Review and adoption process discussed. i. Andrea Gelvin, Suzy Coronel, and Melissa Sawchuk noted for their contribution to the Health Science curriculum review. ii. Program of study alignments discussed. iii. April Scott noted as the CTE Curriculum Coordinator leading the CTE adoption processes. iv. Perkins approval process discussed in relation to curriculum adoption process. 1. Five (5) year Perkins review requirement noted. 2. Architecture & Construction, Capstone & Introductory, and Hospitality & Tourism clusters have already been approved. a. Internship / Work Based Learning curriculum discussed. b. Noted possible expansion of internship program to the City of North Pole. 2. FY18 Perkins grant: a. CTEAC noted as the federally advisory board to meet Perkins grant requirements i. CTEAC as Board advisory council and not committee quorum not required. NEW BUSINESS 3. Update on CTE Strategic Plan: a. Strategic plan objectives discussed. i. Online learning objectives discussed. 1. Expansion of online program discussed. 2. Feedback provided on status of online vendor and course offerings review by Andrea Gelvin. 3. Online learning will not replace teaching staff but will enhance offerings available to students to expand opportunities. 4. OnStrategy comprehensive CTE Study Re-Envisioning CTE: Creating Future Ready Students: a. Program alignment discussed. b. Capacity discussed / maximizing space and talents of staff. c. Evaluating the role of HHS in CTE offerings. d. Timeline: i. Expect to have project completed in May. ii. Survey launch in October: 1. Student / Staff / Parents Survey. 2. Employer Survey. a. Distribution of employer survey discussed. b. Need for comprehensive understanding of workforce needs. c. Andrea Gelvin s work noted in Health Science industry research. 3. Distribution methodology Joni Simpson: a. Computers set up at schools during parent / teacher conferences. b. Staff can help guide through the process and trouble shoot issues / problems.

INFORMATION 1. Personalized Learning: a. Core Four elements discussed as historically CTE teaching models. b. CTE as personalized learning: i. CTE leads to high graduation rates and ownership in the learning process. 1. Students get excited about their learning and programs. 2. Federally Registered Apprenticeships: a. Health Care Apprenticeships discussed. i. South Central AHEC Registered Apprentices discussed by Andrea Gelvin. 1. Current employees promoting into apprentices in health industry companies. ii. Growth of apprenticeships in health care discussed. b. Aviation apprenticeships discussed. i. Ramp agents, A & P mechanics, pilot shortages noted. c. School district hopes to expand offerings as apprenticeships expand. CLOSING COMMENTS FROM COMMITTEE MEMBERS Andrea Wade Discussed starting own advisory council to guide NPHS CTE programs. Student surveys discussed as a tool to meet student needs. Clarice Mingo Excited to see MOA in process with City of North Pole and Eielson for Internship opportunities. Shout out to NPHS leadership / staff for expanding NPHS CTE program offerings. Joni Simpson New role in CTE department discussed. Rebecca Bruntz Future CTE member highlighted. Happy to start school year as high school support and programs have expanded rather than decreased. Goal is to develop and set students up for success in the health care career fields upon graduation of high school. Hot jobs and non-clinical career fields highlighted. Mental Health first aid to be offered in addition to existing certifications. Andrea Gelvin A good health science program of study also has a good CTSO HOSA highlighted. HOSA pamphlets distributed to CTEAC members. Expansion of HOSA chapter to NPHS. Dwindling State support of CTSO s discussed which may result in the changing of State conference model. Beth Reagin Discussed Governor Walker s tour of Hutchison High School and the CTE program. The student lead tour was well received by the Governor. Districtwide HHS course offerings discussed in relation to part-time enrollment numbers at HHS. Part-time enrollment comes from districtwide enrollment, not just West Valley High School. Positive impact on students and community noted. ADJOURNMENT at 6:42 PM.

Committee membership is not required for participation; however, we encourage community members to apply for the committee membership positions noted below. Committee members will act in an advisory capacity regarding CTE in the district.
