COMPOSERS CONTEST STATE OF OHIO *OFMC* 2016 RULES Susan Carlock, Chairman/Carlock22@gmail.com ********** For the State of Ohio, you are required to read these rules, abide by them, and verify on the application form that you have read these rules with your teacher and your parent(s)/legal guardian(s). Make sure you are using the 2016 Rules and Application! Older applications cannot be accepted. ********** ELIGIBILITY: 1. The composer is not required to be an American born or naturalized citizen at the state level in Ohio. However, if a student wins at the State level in Ohio and is NOT an American citizen or a naturalized American citizen, he/she will NOT be eligible to enter the Regional or National competition. 2. The composer must be 18 years old or younger as of March 1 of the contest year. 3. The composer must be a member in good standing of a Junior Club affiliated with OFMC, or an Individual Junior Special member of OFMC, with dues already paid by the applicable deadline for the contest year. This means: that the composer s teacher must be a member of a Senior OFMC Club, with dues paid and current for the contest year OR the composer s teacher must be a Senior Special member, with dues already paid by the applicable deadline for the contest year. Membership dues that have not already been paid by the teacher (whether by being a member of a Senior club or a Special Member) by the deadline of December 15, 2015 and paid applicable late fees, if needed, AND membership dues that have not already been paid by the composer (whether by being a member of a Federated Jr. Music Club or Special Member) will disqualify your application. 4. ALL DUES MUST HAVE BEEN PAID BY DEADLINE OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR OF SUBMISSION IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE. If dues have not been paid by the deadline of the previous year, the composition will be disqualified. Be proactive and pay dues on time! Note: If you have a question about the teacher s membership or the composer s membership, please contact: Sally Christman at: kscdchristman@aol.com. TYPE OF ENTRY: 1. Compositions may be for keyboard, voice, other instruments or any combination. All compositions must be submitted first to the State Chairman. 2. The composition must be the original work of the composer. Obtaining copyright release for the verse, if necessary, is the responsibility of the composer. 3. All compositions must be notated clearly in ink on manuscript paper by the student or computer Generated by the student. Legible copies are acceptable. 4. Entrant classifications are: JI: through age 9; JII ages 10-12; JIII ages13-15; JIV-ages 16-18 (as of March 1 of the contest year). Note: National first place winners in any class may not win in that class again. CONTENT AND MUSICIANSHIP will be taken into account when judged. Keep a copy of your composition in case of loss in the mail. Please follow rules carefully and postmark your entry by January 15, 2016.
Continued: Page Two RULES: 1. The composer, teacher, and parents must read the 2016 Rules for the Ohio Application form. 2. All Classes (I, II, II, and IV) must be annotated on manuscript paper by the entrant or Computer-generated by the entrant. The State Chairman must receive all entries by the deadline established by each State s Chair. CD s are REQUIRED at all levels. 3. Entries are to be anonymous at the State level of competition. Do not put your name on the composition. Place title at the top center of the composition, with age and classification in the upper right hand corner of All pages (and on CD, if submitted). Credit for verse in vocals should be in the upper left hand corner. Instrumentation, if other than piano, should be indicated. If your composition continues on to Regionals the composer s name will be added by the State Chair. Note: Keep a copy of your composition in case of loss in the mail. 4. Only one composition per entrant may be submitted. Lengthy compositions may be edited for publication in the Ohio Jr. Composers book. Class winners should be willing to have their compositions performed at the OFMC State Convention either by composer or someone else. See #3 below. SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION for the State of Ohio: 1. COMPLETE the 2016 State of Ohio application ONLY. It can be found at www.ofmc.org under Competitions/Awards. IMPORTANT: Application forms must contain the actual cursive signature of three (3) people: the composer, the teacher, and parent or guardian. Signing for a teacher or student may disqualify your application. Lack of signed application form will be reason for disqualification. You must send form to the State Chairman. 2. In the State of Ohio, a booklet containing the compositions of the 1 st and 2 nd place winners in each category will be published. Your submission to this competition automatically is stating that you AGREE to have your composition published in the Ohio Jr. Composition Booklet without compensation and you are automatically agreeing to releasing the copyright for the publication in this Booklet. 3. If your composition receives 1 st place in your category, you are also agreeing to perform your composition or have it performed at the OFMC convention in October of the application year without compensation. 5. FEES: For the State of Ohio, the application fee is $14.00 total. (National form not needed) This fee includes the State and National Fees combined. 6. MAIL: Postal Regulations prohibit the use of metered postage for return mail. Use regular stamps from the Post Office for return postage on the (Self-addressed, stamped envelope) SASE. You will need three envelopes: a) You will need three #6 envelopes, SASE with $3 postage on each envelope to return your materials. Note: you will not receive materials back without $3 postage. Every entrant will receive a book this year with the third envelope that has $3 postage. b) Mail three copies of your composition, three recordings in three paper CD sleeves and your 2016 Application and check or money order payable to OFMC.
Continued: Page Three c) Place the above in another #6 envelope or larger with adequate postage to: Susan Carlock, Chairman OFMC Junior Composers Contest 5781 Brookbank Drive, Dayton OH 45440-2716 Ohio applications are to be submitted and POSTMARKED by January 15, 2016 to the State Chairman. After the State Contest is completed, the 1st and 2nd place winners are forwarded to the Regional Chairman, so as to be received by March 1 st. Regional winners are selected and forwarded to the National Chairman so as to be received by April 1 st for final adjudication and awarding of cash prizes. You may not receive results before April 1 st..be patient AWARDS: Although the Junior Composers Contest is no longer a part of NFMC Jr. Festival, students may work towards Jr. Festival Gold Cups. Gold Cup Points are awarded to the composer each year he/she enters a composition and are accumulative. Your entry fee that is paid with your application is inclusive of the gold cup program. The points are awarded at the State Level only.
