ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Dear Friends, For the past two years it has been my pleasure to serve as the Chair of the Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation (ICRF). I recall over three years ago when one my local industry members came to me and told me about the challenges facing the construction workforce, we immediately decided that something needed to be done to engage students in these productive and rewarding careers. Within the next 12 months, we had built a partnership between government, industry, and education called Build Your Future Indiana. Every year since its inception, Build Your Future Indiana has been training industry professionals to come and speak to students in classrooms around the state. These ambassadors help build connections to local students and schools, and allow students to visualize themselves in a construction career. As an educator, I have seen firsthand the difference this has made among students, families, workforce professionals, and legislators. I am proud to say we have met with over 20,000 students and their influencers every year. We continue to expand our efforts, and have built partnerships within the Indiana Builders Association, Indiana Constructors, Inc., Indiana Subcontractors Association, Asphalt Paving Association of Indiana, Indiana Construction Roundtable, Indiana Ready Mix Concrete Association, Associated Builders and Contractors of Indiana/Ohio/Kentucky, and the Indiana Union Construction Industry. As of 2018, we have commercial, residential, horizontal, union, and non-union contractors together in the effort to engage the workers of tomorrow. With a mission to inform, encourage, and empower individuals to pursue careers in the construction industry and related field, we have always been, and will always be, focused on the difference that a career in construction can make in the life of an Indiana resident. Thank you to all of our partners. None of our success would have been possible without you. I am excited to see what the future brings, and grateful for the difference that this effort has made in our state. We would not be where we are today, nor will we be able to reach our future goals, without your continued support. Sincerely, Robert Taylor ICRF Chair Superintendent, Lebanon School Corporation

FUTURE OBJECTIVES/ CURRENT PRIORITIES 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Awareness through BYF: By bringing together all the silos of construction (road, commercial and residential), we can go into high schools with a more comprehensive message. It s important to present ALL pathways to teachers and students so the students can choose the path that s best for them. Diversity in Industry: the construction workforce has very low diversity labor force participation, and low female and minority participation as a whole. Women represent less than 10%, and African-Americans represent less than 6% of the total construction workforce. These numbers need to change, and ICRF outreach and programs will maintain a continuous focus on bringing construction opportunities to all. Skills training that could make students more attractive to employers at graduation: Identify basic level certifications such as NCCER Core Curriculum and NCCER Tools for Success that would be helpful to employers. Compressed certificate-based training programs will help students and prospective employees to be more attractive to employers. Connection with non-traditional (adult) students: We need to connect with these students because non-traditional students have gone back to school to improve their situation. They want to work when they graduate. And, many of them would thrive with a career in construction. Connection with college dropouts: When someone drops out of college, they can quickly become lost. They lose hope and are at a vulnerable point in their lives. College drop outs need a win, or their lives could turn for the worse. We need to connect with people who drop out and offer them the opportunity to take a compressed class (for free) and then connect with a job. Training for Veterans: When veterans return from service, they often struggle to find high paying jobs that they are qualified for. Veterans come to us with an already strong work ethic and are ideal candidates for the industry. Training for prisons and previously convicted felons: Our industry is not crying out with an appetite to hire felons. However, our industry is a reasonably accommodating industry for people who have previously convicted felonies. If we can connect with felons who are hirable, provide them with basic training, this will be good for our communities and the construction industry.

BY TRAINING ICRF S NEW TRAINING PROGRAMING The mission of the Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation (ICRF) is to encourage, inform, and empower individuals to pursue careers within the construction industry. The BY training program will empower people to take the first step towards a productive long-term career in construction. Those who invest in their future will soon realize the value that accompanies this career pathway. As a state, a very productive dialogue surrounding tomorrow s Indiana workforce is occurring. It is with this dialogue that the ICRF Board of Directors believes that it is an opportune time to connect people to well-paying construction related jobs. A stronger Hoosier worker means a stronger Indiana, and investing in communities surrounding our major construction projects provides even greater opportunities for the projects of tomorrow. The ICRF, in considering this mission, seeks to create an opportunity to improve the connection between construction careers, projects, and the community. In partnership with our communities and industry, we would like to begin directly helping individuals realize the American dream and build a stronger Hoosier workforce for tomorrow. We have networked with union and non-union employers from commercial, residential, and horizontal markets, and, in listening to these partners, have developed our BY Training program. This is a one month program, built with the intention of providing individuals with the skills and confidence to begin a career in construction. In utilizing national industry accredited courses and credentials, participants in the program will have exposure to soft skills training paired with education on hand tools, power tools, construction mathematics, blueprint reading, basic rigging and construction safety. The training will be offered at no cost to the student, and at the end of the program graduates will be connected directly to companies. Our first class will begin in August of 2019. This program will be open to all interested employers as we slowly ramp up efforts throughout the state in the coming years. There are multiple sponsorship benefits directly associated with our adult engagement efforts. Thank you to everyone who has lent their support to this endeavor over the past year. Our community partners are very excited, and we look forward to the impact this will have on industry and community alike. Chris Price Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation

HOW TO BE A PART OF BUILD YOUR FUTURE INDIANA Become an Ambassador Build Your Future Indiana has hundreds of volunteers from the construction industry committed to engaging with students, and talking with them about opportunities available in construction careers. We call these dedicated men and women our Ambassadors. All Ambassadors are background checked, and trained by ICRF staff on best practices for engaging with students, how to tell a personal story, and provided with the tools necessary to perform outreach in schools. Perception is the key to winning the hearts and minds of young Hoosiers and their families. By engaging in faceto-face conversations with professional, trained volunteers, Indiana residents are able to see that construction is a professional, trustworthy, and rewarding occupation. Build Your Future Indiana receives dozens of requests for school visits every single month. If you are an industry professional interested in volunteering, or a company looking for ways to get engaged, contact Director of Youth Engagement, Kate Martin, at Kate@Indianaconstruction.org. We Need Your Help The best way to support Build Your Future Indiana s workforce efforts is with a sponsorship commitment to the ICR Foundation. Our sponsors are what enable the ICRF to continue to expand BYFI s impact on students throughout the state, maximize access to construction fields for adult populations, and spread the message that a career in construction possesses opportunities for everyone in the Hoosier economy.
