November / December 2016 Holiday Season It s that time of year where we come together in social gatherings, eat festive foods, and give thanks. November is traditionally a month of showing our appreciation. We begin this month by thanking our veterans with a Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11 at the Springdale Veterans Memorial. Thursday s This & That program will be all about the Arlington National Cemetery, where many of our national heroes lay at rest. Then, of course, Thanksgiving Day when we all gather with family and friends to give thanks for many blessings. I love the Thanksgiving season! December brings an opportunity to give a Springdale family a wonderful Christmas with the Giving Tree. I am always amazed at the generosity of our members, and I am sure it will continue this year. We also will have a Christmas themed trip to Neusole and a Craft Day to kindle the holiday spirit. This marks the end to another great year. Can you believe it? Thanks to everyone who attended our programs at the Springdale Community Center throughout the year. We had over 385 participants join in our Active Aging Week activities. I hope you enjoyed it as much as Jay and I did. We also introduced a few new programs including Pickleball, Craft Day, and Ballroom Dancing. If you missed them, I am sure you will see them again in 2017, along with our old-time favorites. Have a great Holiday season. I can t wait for the New Year and what it will bring! The Giving Tree It s time to show your Springdale holiday spirit with our Giving Tree. We will again be partnering with S.O.S. (Springdale Offering Support) to provide gifts for less fortunate families within our community. The tree will be decorated with ornaments listing a gift wish on the back. If you would like to participate, select an ornament, sign it out at the front desk, purchase the item, and return it unwrapped with the ornament attached to the Springdale Community Center by Friday, December 2. We are searching for a few volunteers to help wrap the gifts on Wednesday December 7 at 10:00 a.m. Please let Donna know if you can help. If you have any questions, please call 346-3910. Annual Holiday Luncheon Thursday, December 8 11:30 a.m. Come celebrate with us at our annual Holiday Luncheon! Vincenzo s Ristorante Italiano on Chester Road is the place where we will come together to celebrate, eat good food, and enjoy some festive Christmas music. The menu will include a choice from three entrées: Pollo Tre Formaggi (breast of chicken in a mozzarella, provolone, and parmigiano cream sauce, served with farfalle pasta), Maiale al forno (boneless pork loin roasted with garlic and rosemary, served with roasted potatoes and fresh vegetable mix), or the Fresh Catch of the Day served with a light lemon-white wine sauce and pasta alfredo. All entrees include a house salad, bread, soft drinks, ice tea, coffee and dessert. Alcoholic beverages may be purchased individually. The cost for this festive afternoon is $15.00 for members and $17.00 for guests. Reservations must be made with payment by November 28. Stop by the front desk or call 346-3910 with questions. Words from a Fitness Guru Why was the tree stretching? So it could be timber! Ok, it s not my best joke, but it s a great introduction to an article about stretching. Stretching is often the most overlooked and ignored exercise, especially among seniors. Yet nothing is more fundamental to keeping an aging body limber and injury free. As we age, our muscles lose elasticity and our joints become stiff if we re not active. Have you had problems reaching to tie your shoes or looking over your shoulder to back out of the driveway? Introducing some simple stretching exercise into your routine can greatly improve your flexibility. It can also help with balance, posture, circulation, stress, pain relief and injury prevention. It is particularly helpful if you suffer from osteoarthritis. Begin your routine with a little warm-up by walking in place and pumping your arms. I recommend six basic stretches for everyone to get started with: Hand behind back towel stretch, doorway stretch, neck flexion, hip flexor stretch, hamstring stretch, and calf stretch. It s very important to listen to your body. Stretch each muscle to the point where the muscle feels tight. If it hurts, you ve gone too far. Back off until you stop feeling pain. Hold each stretch 10-30 seconds. Relax, then repeat 3-5 times, trying to stretch a little farther each time. Remember to breathe. Relaxed breathing helps your muscles relax. Try not to bounce, bouncing can cause injuries. Be patient and go slow. You didn t lose flexibility overnight and you won t get it back overnight either. Stretch at least three times per week to see the best results. If you aren t sure how to do these stretches or would like additional help, please see a Fitness Center Team Member and we would be glad to assist you. Remember to always consult a physician before beginning any exercise program. Yours in Health & Happiness, Jay Bunco Tuesday, November 15 1:00 p.m. Join us for a rousing game of Bunco. Occasionally you see the big pink fuzzy dice flying through the air and someone yelling "Bunco!" If you can add up to 21, throw the dice and shout bunco, you are a bunco player. There will be prizes for the winners and a small snack for everyone. To register for this free activity call 346-3910 or stop by the front desk by November 11. Introduction to Tai Chi What is Tai Chi? Technology 101 Saturdays - November 12-26 Take advantage of this opportunity for private instruction on your ipad, smart phone, notebook, navigation or other mobile devices. Instruction on the computer in the Senior Lounge is also available. Forty-five minute appointments will be available November 12, November 19, and November 26 at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Participants should bring their fully charged mobile device with them to the appointment. To secure a convenient time, register early with payment of $3.00! Please one appointment per person. Register with payment by calling 346-3910 or stop by the Community Center. Monday, November 28 12:00 p.m. Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial arts form of movements that is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Who can do Tai Chi? Tai Chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact, because Tai Chi is a low impact exercise, it may be especially suitable if you're an older adult who otherwise may not exercise. Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by November 23. Free Program! Christmas Craft Day Tuesday, December 6 1:00 p.m. Join us for another great craft day! We will be making Christmas Suncatchers. All materials will be provided. There will be Christmas trees, ornaments, wreaths, and maybe a bell or two. Just for the fun of it, let s all wear our favorite Christmas attire. Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by December 1. Arlington Cemetery Thursday, November 10 2:00 p.m. Just a day before we celebrate Veterans Day, Rita Wetterstroem returns with one of her most interesting stories, "The Story of the Arlington Cemetery." Few images linger in the national imagination as vividly as this hallowed ground, with its ghostly white tombstones, its deep green turf, and its most recognizable traditions. Here the story how it became one of our nation's most honored resting places. Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by November 8. Plan Ahead Thursday, November 17 12:00 p.m. Planning ahead for our final wishes is a natural and loving process that we all must face. Formulating a plan keeps you in control. You decide how you wish to be remembered and it takes the burden off your loved ones. A representative from Newcomer Funeral Homes will be here to give you valuable information to make these final arrangements. Lunch will be provided following the presentation. Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by November 11. Cincinnati's Winter Holiday Traditions Thursday, December 15 2:00 p.m. Can you remember some of the Holiday traditions you and your family had when you were little or when your kids were small? The big train display at General Electric or waiting in line at Shillitos to see Santa. Come reminisce as the Cincinnati Museum Center shares some of Cincinnati's most memorable holiday traditions. Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by December 13. This & That programs are open to the public. Holiday Cookie Contest Monday, December 19 1:00 p.m. Who wants to bake some Christmas cookies? Who wants to eat Christmas cookies? You will get your chance on December 19. There will be a prize for the best tasting cookie (it must be homemade) and a prize for the best decorated cookie (decorated by hand). Each baker should bring at least 2 dozen cookies for sharing and judging. So get out those recipes and cookie cutters and start practicing. Remember Donna can t eat tree nuts! Register at the front desk or call 346-3910 by December 15. Neusole Glassworks Tuesday, December 20 2:00 p.m. Join us for a short trip to Neusole Glassworks. On December 20, we will meet at the Springdale Community Center at 1:30 p.m. to carpool to Neusole in Forest Park.
