LIVE Competitions BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES- LIVE Challenges The Big Idea The goal of this project is to design a start-up business. The student will be presenting the idea to a group of investors to secure funding for the project. The student may select a product or service that is in existence or a new to the world idea students must prove to the investors why the product is a worthy investment and/or why the product/service is more appealing than a similar product that is currently available. Live Radio Announcement Students will read a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on NWTC's Internet Radio Station - TC Campus Connection. The student will have 5 minutes to preview the 30 second radio ad before announcing it on the air. The student will decide the mood and feeling that the announcement should convey. Is it humorous, serious, playful or instructional. They will need to complete the reading of the ad in 30 seconds or be cut off mid message. How fast or slow do you speak? What do you sound like? The best announcement wins! BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES DISPLAY Challenges Design & Graphic Technology Create and display an 11x17 poster (landscape or portrait) with a theme focused on a public service announcement. The poster can be created using any raster or vector image program(s). Can t wait to see your creative designs! Printed Production Piece Students will present/display a production style printed piece in either one or multi-color schemes. Acceptable substrates can include paper, synthetic or fabric. BUSINESS & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES DIGITAL Challenges Digital Media Technology- Music Production Compose a 2-3 minute song or instrumental from computer software or recorded audio. A bounce or export of the song in mp3 format can be sent in and will be judged on originality, creativity, the balance on the mix of instruments and the quality of the playing or composing. The top pieces will be played on TC Campus Connection. Digital Media Technology- Radio Production Produce a 2-3 minute radio documentary, the top pieces will be played on TC Campus Connection. The piece should include an interview and will be judged on the quality of the recording, editing and subject matter. The piece can be sent in and will be judged by radio station personnel. Documentary Photography Students will create a series of photographs documenting the topic of diversity in five photographs. This series of photos will focus on storytelling and could revolve around (but are not limited to) people, culture, or environment. The winning submission will be digitally displayed in the Digital Arts Atrium Gallery. 1

TRADES & ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES LIVE Challenges Auto Collision Repair Demonstrate your skills in repairing vehicle damage. In this competition, you ll be required to repair a damaged part to industry standards. NWTC will supply the damaged part, tools, and materials. You supply the knowledge and skills! Auto Technology Held on Green Bay and Marinette Campus Got what it takes to troubleshoot car problems? Prove it in this three-section event! Section 1: Test typical automotive electrical/electronic components using common electrical testing equipment. Section 2: Identify and evaluate typical automotive mechanical components. Common evaluation tools will be used for this section. Section 3: Take a written exam consisting of questions relating to typical automotive systems operation, diagnosis and service. Section 4: Measure brake rotor thickness to determine if it can be machined to specification or discarded. Diesel Heavy Equipment - Held on Sturgeon Bay Campus This three part challenge will include a written test, 15 minute speed round of component identification and finish with a live troubleshooting challenge on a live, running 2-cylinder diesel engine. Diesel Medium and Heavy Truck This three part challenge will include a written test, 15 minute speed round of component identification and finish with a live troubleshooting challenge on a live 6 cylinder large bore engine. Parametric Modeling Let s see your parametric modeling software skills. You ll use AutoDesk Inventor or SolidWorks to draw the 3D part and 2D drawing. Revit Proficiency Have experience and skills with Revit building information modeling software? In this challenge, you ll draw a building/portion of a building in Revit. Sustainable Solar Building Design Design and model a simple three-room home to maximize its energy efficiency and renewable energy production. Least energy consuming model home wins! Competitors may work in a team of two-to-four students. Welding Skills Held on Green Bay and Marinette Campus Show us your welding skills! In this competition, you ll demonstrate your skills in oxy/acetylene cutting and multiple welding processes. The event will consist of three parts and will take from two to two-and-a-half hours. 2

TRADES & ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES - DISPLAY Challenges Architectural Drawing Do you have experience and skills with Revit building information modeling software? In this challenge, you ll use basic to intermediate skills to model a simple building design that matches given specifications. Machine Shop Project Held on Green Bay and Marinette Campus In this challenge, you ll use machine shop equipment to make a metal object of your choice. Your display will be judged on quality, complexity, and overall appearance and utility. Static Welding/ Fabrication Projects Put your welding skills to the challenge in either of these display competition. Fabricate a metal object of your choice. Your work will be judged on quality, complexity, and overall appearance and utility. Creative Metal Fabrication Competition is metal fabrications that are designed and built for decoration or aesthetic. Functional Metal Fabrication Competition is metal fabrications that are designed and built to produce a function. SCIENCE LIVE Challenges Anatomy & Physiology Knowledge Bowl Your knowledge of anatomy and physiology will be challenged in this two-round, team competition. All teams compete in the first round of oral quizzing which will incorporate open-ended questions (and buzzers, of course!). Through elimination, the top two scoring teams move on to the second round a written, hands-on laboratory competition involving the identification of anatomical structures and their functions using models, specimens and the Anatomage table. Sound interesting? Put a team together, study some A & P, and game on! Catapult Catastrophe! Imagine, studying mechanics through the historical lens of the catapult. Awesome, right? To prepare for this team competition, your physics class could learn about topics such as kinematics, forces, momentum, and impulse which would all be integrated into the researching, building, testing, and modification of catapults made mostly of recycled materials. You and your fellow students will compete in your own school/classroom to determine the representative to Tech Challenge. Entry deadline is March 22, 2019 GUIDELINES General Rules Students in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate Students may choose up to a maximum of three events Students may enter only 1 DISPLAY project per competitive category Register Online Students MUST register in advance to enter Tech Challenge competitions Register online by Friday March 22, 2019 go to www.nwtc.edu/techchallenge SET UP AND EQUIPMENT LIVE Competition Students are to report to the room for their competition as noted on the schedules provided the day of the event. DISPLAY Competition Projects are to be submitted to the appropriate display location by 9am on April 12. The display areas will be closed for judging from 9:30am-11:30am. Projects may be picked up anytime after 11:30am JUDGING AND AWARDS JUDGING for Display Competition Judges are chosen from local industries, advisory committee members, alumni, or staff. Judging will be from 12pm-1:30pm on April 12. AWARDS The top STAR FIRST winners will receive a scholarship to NWTC. SCHOLARSHIPS Tech Challenge scholarship awards will be provided to all STAR FIRST place winners, redeemable upon enrollment as a student ($1000 for 12 or more credits or $500 for 3-11 credits) at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. Scholarships may be redeemed at any NWTC campus. Scholarships are redeemable only for the summer or fall semester FOLLOWING high school graduation. Students must be enrolled as a student on campus. These scholarships are non-transferable. 4
