A Big Thank You to those who helped with the assembly of 1st Day Packets during the summer. THANK YOU!!!! Allison Edwards, Kim Parets, Maggie Sullivan, Sarah Solomon, Lori Hockensmith Jennifer Fanning Vacant Seat Program Application Start date is Monday, October 1, 2018 The West Hartford Public Schools vacant seat program utilizes available space on school buses. This program allows students to ride buses, where space is available, who under the West Hartford Public Schools Transportation policy are not eligible for transportation. No additional bus stops are added to the routes for this program. Interested parents should contact the West Hartford Public Schools Transportation Office at (860)561-6647 for additional information on or after October 1st. Requests are taken in this office by telephone on a first come, first served basis starting at 8:00 am. ELC Lottery Applications The Early Learning Center at Whiting Lane School and Aiken Elementary School is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year. The program is family centered and has half day sessions that meet four days a week. A lottery will be conducted in January. To be considered for the program, children must be three years old by September 1, 2019, toilet-trained by the start of the school year and exhibit age-appropriate language, social and play skills. All applicants must participate in a play-based screening prior to being considered for the lottery selection. If you are interested, please contact Pam Macca at (860) 233-1455. The application process will close on December 15, 2018. RESPONSIBLE STUDENTS Just a reminder about helping students be responsible: We encourage parents not to bring in forgotten items to school for their child. If you must bring something in the office, we ask that you make sure your child s name and teacher s name is on the item. You can leave the item on the office counter and we will leave a message in the teacher s voice mail. Thank you for helping make your child responsible. IS YOUR CHILD GOING TO BE ABSENT OR TARDY? Please remember to call the school office (233-8535) if your child will be tardy or absent. You may report an absence before 8:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. by using the voice mail system at the same number. Any absence reported by the teacher, but not the parent, will alert the office to a potential problem and will necessitate a call to your home.
PLEASE POST THIS BY YOUR PHONE AT HOME & AT WORK!! SCHOOL CLOSINGS & DELAYS DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER The superintendent of schools determines the necessity for a delayed opening or emergency closing of school due to weather conditions or other emergencies. Parents will receive a phone call via the School Messenger System informing them of a delayed opening or emergency closing. In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or other circumstances, parents/guardians will be notified by the principal via the School Messenger System. This allows parents to be notified by phone within minutes. Announcements regarding school-opening delays or closings also are made over local radio and TV. This information may also be accessed by visiting our website at www.whps.org for closings, cancellations and additional information. When schools are closed early, all school-related afternoon and evening activities are cancelled as well. REMINDER: Whenever there is a delayed opening, ALL morning activities such as Band & Choir, Gym Rats, etc., are cancelled. Early Dismissals: It is very important that you review early dismissal emergency procedures with your child. Please listen to the news stations. It is appreciated if you do not call the school to check on closings. EMERGENCY EARLY CLOSING In the event of an emergency early closing, these are the early closing times on ALL days. PLEASE NOTE NEW DISMISSAL TIMES* High School 10:30 am Middle School 11:00 am ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 11:45 am * Give your children 3 to 5 homes to go to in the neighborhood, in a certain order. Show them where an extra house key is kept. Remind them to go to the designated neighbor, but then be certain to leave a note for you (on the back door or in the mailbox) as to where they are staying. We suggest that you walk through a simulation with your child. In the event of an emergency early closing, Morley Extended Day Care will close when school closes. SUPERVISION BEFORE SCHOOL All students should not be on school grounds before 8:20 am Bus students are not to exit the bus until 8:20 am at the school. Parents will be called if their children are consistently dropped off before this time. There is no supervision on the grounds until 8:20 am Please be sure that your child (ren) are not arriving or being dropped off before that time. There is no access to the school before the first bell @ 8:30 am. Thank you for your cooperation in the safety of your child. OUTDOOR RECESS POLICY The recess policy dictates that all students will go outside for recess if the temperature is 20º Fahrenheit or above. Youngsters should be appropriately dressed to spend time outdoors during recess. Warm clothes, gloves, hats, and boots are required during the winter months. Children well enough to come to school should be well enough to be outside during recess. Exceptions for medical reasons may be granted on an individual basis, with a doctor s note. In the event of inclement or severely cold weather, outdoor recess will be canceled.
