FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 16, 2014 CONTACT: JOHANNA KREMER Marketing and Communications Director Archbishop Moeller High School JKremer@Moeller.org CELL: 513.325.7161 MOELLER NEWS Moeller Honors Top-10 Scholars and Senior Awardees CINCINNATI, May 16, 2014 Archbishop Moeller High School faculty, staff, and administration held their 2 nd Annual Top- 10 Scholars Program on Tuesday, May 13, honoring the Top-10 scholars and senior awardees and their families with an ceremony and luncheon at the school. This year, the recipient of the Man of Moeller Award one of the top-five senior honors, was also recognized. Students recognized include: Mark Bugada Tyler Schumacher VALEDICTORIAN/TRINITY HOUSE: Moeller s Class Valedictorian received the Presidential Scholarship from the University of Waterloo and will study honors kinesiology. Mark is a recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, the President s Education Award, the Biology (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), the Psychology (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), the English 4 Humanities (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), a member of the Spanish and National Honor Societies, and an AP Scholar with Honor. He was also a three-year varsity starter for the Moeller Soccer Team, an Academic All-Star, and a 2 nd Team All-GCL selection, and Greider Memorial Award recipient, which is one of the school s highest academic honors for athletes. Mark will continue his soccer career at the University of Waterloo. He is a Montgomery resident and an All Saint s parishioner. SALUTATORIAN/EVESLAGE HOUSE: Moeller s Class Salutatorian received the Top Merit Scholarship Package from Miami University (Ohio). Tyler is the recipient of the John Massarella Award Humanities), the English 4 Humanities (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), the Physics AP Subject Award (2 nd Highest), Religion 4 Humanities Subject Award (Honors 2/1 st Highest), the Statistics (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), U.S. Government/Politics (AP) Subject Award (1 st Highest), and the President s Education Award. He was also a varsity member of the Academic Team. In addition, Tyler will be providing one of the two Class Reflection speeches at Graduation on Thursday, May 15. Moeller s commencement speakers are chosen after going through a rigorous selection process. Tyler resides in Mason. Henry Myers Nicholas Schlueter ZARAGOZA HOUSE: Henry received the Distinguished Academic Scholarship from Kenyon College and will study math and economics. He is a recipient the Cincinnati Zoo Book Award, the Michelson-Morely Award for Math and Science, the President s Education Award, and a member of the Spanish Honor Society. Henry participated in March for Life and Shantytown service programs. He was selected 1 st Team All-City in soccer and will continue his soccer career at Kenyon College. Henry lives in Lebanon and is a member of All Saint s Parish. GOLD SHIELD AWARD/ZEHLER HOUSE: Nick received the Trustees' Merit Scholarship and Marianist Leadership Scholarship from the University of Dayton and will study mechanical engineering. He received Moeller s Gold Shield Award, one of Moeller s top five senior honors. Nick is also the recipient of the University of Notre Dame Book Award, the OHSAA Scholar Athlete Award, and the President s Education Award. He was an AP Scholar with Distinction, a

National Merit Scholar Finalist, was a Kairos Retreat Leader and Kairos Rector, and served as president of the National Honor Society. In addition, Nick ran varsity track and cross country, was a member of the Academic Team, and served as a House Captain for each of his four years. Nick resides in Montgomery and is an All Saints Parishioner. Michael Shaffer Nestor Worobetz Zachariah Logue Paul Hanna Evan Verrilli Daniel Bruns ZARAGOZA HOUSE: Michael received a waiver of non-resident tuition from Texas A&M University and will study psychology. He was a member of the Spanish and National Honor Societies, an AP Scholar, a recipient of the National Spanish Recognition Award. He participated in Moeller s Spanish Exchange Program and had over 250 hours of community service. Michael was also a Moeller House Captain, a Kairos retreat leader his senior year, and a member of the 2012 and 2013 Football State Championship Teams. He lives in Morrow and is a member of St. Phillip the Apostle parish. ZARAGOZA HOUSE: Nester (Tory) received the McKissick Scholars Award from the University of South Carolina and will study biomedical engineering. He was a member of the Latin and National Honor Societies, an AP Scholar, and a recipient of the University of Kentucky Book Award for Academic Excellence. Tory was a varsity member of the Moeller Swim Team and team captain. In addition, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, compiled more than 100 hours of community service his junior year and was a Kairos retreat leader. Tory is a Mason resident and member of St. Susanna parish. EVESLAGE HOUSE: Zach received the Kentucky Heritage Scholarship from the University of Kentucky. He was a member of the Spanish Honor Society, a recipient of the President s Education award, and he received the Math Department s academic award given to the student with the highest average over four years, and a Mentor Group Captain. An accomplished athlete, Zach was a member of the 2013 Baseball State Championship Team, was a 1 st Team All-City selection, and received the Red s Futures High School Showcase MVP award. He continues his baseball career at the University of Kentucky. Zach resides in Mason and is a parishioner at St. Susanna. QUIROGA HOUSE: Paul will be studying engineering in at Purdue University. He is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and received the Science Department s Academic Award for four years of excellence. Paul was a two-year varsity soccer player, a peer tutor in the Moeller Writing Center, a member of the Corryville Catholic Little Buddies Service Program, and an Eagle Scout. He lives in Milford and is a member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. PILLAR HOUSE: Evan received the Cincinnatus Century Scholarship from the University of Cincinnati and will be studying industrial design. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a varsity member of the Academic Team, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He received Moeller s Art/Photography and English Academic Department Awards for four years of excellence and the President s Education Award. Evan was chosen to be the lead for five theater shows during four years at Moeller, and he wrote for school s literary journal, The Squire. He also participated in Shantytown and Relay for Life service projects and was selected to provide the Class Reflection speech at Graduation. A Loveland resident, Evan is a member of St. Margaret of York Parish. BLESSED FR. CHAMINADE AWARD/QUIROGA HOUSE: Dan received the Marianist Leadership Scholarship & Trustees' Merit Scholarship & Summer Study Abroad Scholarship from the University of Dayton and will be studying exercise physiology. He was the recipient of Moeller s Blessed Father Chaminade Service Award, one of the school s five primary senior honors. As a Pastoral Ministry leader, Dan earned more than 300 hours of community service during his four years at Moeller, received the Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglass Award for his commitment to social injustice, and was a member of Moeller s Pastoral Ministry Executive Board. In addition, Dan was a three-year varsity rugby player, served as a House Captain, and was accepted into the West Point Summer Leadership Experience. He lives in Loveland and is a member of Good Shepherd Parish. MOELLER s CLASS OF 2014 MAN OF MOELLER RECIPIENT: Kyle Zimmerman

Man of Moeller Award Description: Each year the administration presents the Man of Moeller Award to a member of the graduating class who best exemplifies the type of graduate Moeller aims to develop: a student who demonstrates strength of character, exemplary academic commitment, leadership in a variety of school activities, a willingness to give service, and is held in highest regard by his peers and by the faculty. This is one of the school s top-five senior honors. Kyle Zimmerman MAN OF MOELLER AWARD/TRINITY HOUSE: Kyle received the Lindner Honors Plus Program Scholarship and Cincinnatus Scholarship from the University of Cincinnati and will be studying entrepreneurship. He was an AP scholar, a member of the Spanish and National Honor Societies, and a recipient of the University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award. Kyle was also a Kairos Retreat Leader, a member of the Australian Exchange Program, a part of Moeller s Little Buddies Program, and a member of the Pastoral Ministry Executive Board. Kyle was elected to be Moeller s School Captain (similar to school president) his senior year and is the recipient of the Man of Moeller Award, one of Moeller five highest senior honors.
