Christopher Newport University February 2011 In This Issue Mary Brock Forbes Hall Captains' Winning Season Gifts Promote Success Zipcar at CNU Marching Captains Going to London Ask the President With Spring Break beginning Friday, the semester has officially reached its midway point. It's an incredible time at CNU, and I want to share with you some exciting news from across our campus. Forbes Hall Nears Completion! Ask the President CNU is a work in progress, and we are all striving hard to pursue excellence in all that we do. I would welcome your advice, suggestions and questions. Let me know how we can do better or where we fall short of your expectations. E-mail your advice and questions to: Construction of our new integrated science center, Mary Brock Forbes Hall, will be completed this summer. Extending 100 yards across the great lawn's western edge, this $84 million, 21st-century facility will include 160,000 square feet of space for education and discovery. Forbes Hall will house our biology, chemistry, environmental science and psychology programs with 15 classrooms, 70 teaching labs and student research spaces, and 50 faculty offices. Captains Enjoy a Winning Fall Season The Captains continue to excel in the classroom and on the field of play. On Feb. 5, 2011, 242 student-athletes were honored for their academic success in earning GPAs of 3.0 or higher. AskPST@cnu.edu 1/5

I will include some of your questions and answers in my future communications. Overall, CNU's teams enjoyed impressive fall seasons. Men's soccer was ranked No. 1 nationally in NCAA Division III for four weeks, was selected to host first- and second-round NCAA tournament games, and racked up a new season record for wins with a record of 20-2-1. Captains volleyball was ranked in Division III's top 10 all fall, won its regional tournament, and earned a second consecutive trip to the NCAA finals. CNU also scored conference championships in women's soccer, football, men's cross country and cheerleading. Additional teams making NCAA tournament appearances included women's soccer, football and field hockey. With all of the success the Captains achieved, it would have been easy to miss another milestone when CNU hosted the NCAA's field hockey Final Four in November, the first national championship ever held on campus. Keep up-to-date on the Captains' success at cnusports.com. Gifts Promote Student Success 2/5

The generosity of our friends and alumni makes a lasting impact on CNU and our students. I am pleased to announce two recent bequests that will promote student success in the classroom and beyond, from cutting-edge research to community service and the development of important leadership skills. Rebecca and Wylie Kirkpatrick created the Rebecca Kite Endowed Merit Scholarship and the Wylie Kirkpatrick Endowed Scholarship in Environmental Biology through estate bequests of $750,000. The Kirkpatricks were active members of the University's LifeLong Learning Society, and the awards bearing their names will support the academic aspirations of some of our brightest students. Pamela Burnside Gray named CNU as the beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust. This gift of $447,000 helped establish the Gray Family Endowed Leadership Scholarship that will make college more affordable and reward merit. Mrs. Gray's grandson, Elmon Taylor Gray II, graduated from CNU in 2010. The Navigator Society honors those alumni, parents, grandparents and friends who include CNU in their estate plans. Creating a bequest through your will or naming CNU as the beneficiary of your retirement plan provides a flexible means of charitable gift planning. I invite you to contact Lucy Latchum, director of planned giving and scholarships, at llatchum@cnu.edu or (757) 594-7702. CNU Partners With Zipcar 3/5

As part of our continued commitment to sustainability, CNU has launched a new partnership with Zipcar. This cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available to all students ages 18 and older. Zipcars will reduce parking demand on campus while helping to further reduce our collective carbon footprint. The program also provides an additional service to enhance the student experience by giving our students access to self-service transportation 24-7. Two Zipcars are now available on CNU's campus, located in lot K behind the David Student Union and York River Hall and adjacent to McMurran Hall. Rates are affordable, and gas, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles per day are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to four days, and reservations can be made minutes in advance or up to a year ahead of time. For information about how to take advantage of this new initiative, visit: www.zipcar.com/cnu. Marching Captains Going to London! In 2004, under the direction of Professor Brantley Douglas, director of athletic bands, the 71-member CNU Marching Captains made their debut at the football season home opener. Their high energy and superb musicianship have left an indelible mark on the CNU community. 4/5

By 2005 the band exceeded 100 members, and in 2007 marched in the Richmond Christmas Parade. Still growing in numbers and reputation, the band represented CNU in Philadelphia's 2008 Thanksgiving Day Parade. Now, the CNU Marching Captains will be participating in London's 2012 New Year's Day Parade celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Fundraising is under way to support the band's trip, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, from Dec. 28, 2011, thru Jan. 4, 2012, is open to the entire CNU family! If you would like more information please contact Music Program Coordinator Elise Rose at elise.rose@cnu.edu. Ask the President Q: Can recent graduates use CNU resources to find job leads? A: Alumni are absolutely invited to use services available through the Center for Career Planning. You can visit the center's website at ccp.cnu.edu or call (757) 594-8887. Q: When will you be building the new chapel? A: We will break ground on the chapel after graduation in May. 5/5
