LYON COLLEGE MARCHING BAND HANBOOK Mission Statement: The Lyon College Marching Band s primary goal is to provide an outstanding musical experience for every member of the program. Our purpose is to create musical performances that support our athletic events, Lyon College and our community as a whole. Guidelines: The following guidelines have been set to provide clarity to our function and process. It is an honor and privilege to be part of the Lyon College Marching Band. Each member must uphold the ideals, traditions to come, and the legacy that they leave behind. Membership: The Lyon College Marching Band is open to every eligible student in good standing at Lyon College. Students that are also in good standing at the University of Arkansas Community College Batesville may also participate in the band with no credit or scholarship being offered. Auditions are held strictly for placement and part assignments within the Lyon College Marching Band. The Director of Bands will conduct these auditions. Grading and Attendance Policy: Attendance, attitude, and performance are the determining factors in earning a grade for the Lyon College Marching Band. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is expected from every member. Attendance: Absences (Rehearsals) 1 unexcused rehearsal = 1 letter grade 2 unexcused rehearsals = 2 letter grades 3 unexcused rehearsals = 3 letter grades 4 unexcused rehearsals = Failure/Dismissal from Band An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a failing grade and dismissal from the Band. Excused absences are considered for the following reasons: Illness Family Illness/Death Religious beliefs Prior excused school conflict

NOT ACCEPTED AS EXCUSED: Medical appointments (unless an emergency must provide documentation), vacations, work schedules, fraternity/sorority engagements, intramural sports, or homework are not considered excused absences. All absences must be approved by the Director of Bands. EQUIPMENT: All parts of your instrument must be functional at all times. Instruments must be polished and shined for all performances. FLIP FOLDERS and MUSIC must be present for all rehearsals and performances. Percussionists must wear ear plugs. Emergency Medical Forms: Everyone MUST have a medical form on file with the band office. General Rules and Procedures: Daily Operations Rehearsals are as follows: Full Band Tuesday and Thursday (4:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.) Percussion and Color Guard Monday (5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.) Woodwind and Brass (Alternating Weeks) Wednesday (5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.) The Monday and Wednesday sectionals will only last through the month of October. Proper preparation for rehearsal includes having a pencil, music, drill charts, and instrument at EVERY REHEARSAL. Proper rehearsal attire is a must. Good marching shoes and socks are required. (NO FLIPFLOPS or SANDALS) If you need music or drill please address your section leader in a timely fashion. Smoking, drinking, or any type of behavior that would bring negative comment on Lyon College are expressively forbidden, and will cause dismissal from the Lyon College Marching Band.

Uniform The initial uniform for the Lyon College Marching Band will consist of the following. Please notate the costs involved for each item. Band Polo - $17.00 Band T-Shirt Free Nike Baseball Cap - $8.00 Wind Suit Purchased in Late September - $25.00 Black Band Shoes If Needed - $25.00 Total Fees for the Lyon College Marching Band - $75.00 Color guard Members will need to purchase all of the above, but the Color guard uniform will be provided free of charge. Anti-Hazing Policy Hazing means forcing or requiring another person, regardless of that personʼs consent, to perform an act that: *creates a substantial risk of physical harm *substantially or seriously demeans or degrades any person *interferes with a student s scholastic activities The Lyon College Marching Band will abide by the official Lyon College anti-hazing policy.

THE LYON COLLEGE MARCHING BAND 2015 HANDBOOK CONTRACT I have read all the policies, rules, and obligations set forth in the Lyon College Marching Band Handbook. I understand the commitment and expectations of this semester and accept the responsibilities that come with being a member of the Lyon College Marching Band. I will inform the director if I become unable to fulfill my responsibilities as a member. I also understand that violation of policies herein will result in consequences detailed in this handbook. LYON COLLEGE MARCHING BAND FALL SCHEDULE The following schedule lists the required performances of the Lyon College Marching Band. There may be additional performances such as a pep rallies or tail gate functions at games. We will have an exact schedule when rehearsals begin in August. August 28 Campus Wide Pep Rally Location TBA August 29 Scots vs. Tabor College Pioneer Stadium 1:00 p.m. * September 5 Scots vs. Lindsey Wilson Pioneer Stadium 1:00 p.m. * September 12 Scots vs. Hendrix College Conway 6:00 p.m. * October 3 Scots vs. Bacone College Pioneer Stadium 2:00 p.m. * October 24 Scots vs. Austin College Pioneer Stadium 1:00 p.m. * (Homecoming) October 21 Scots vs. Langston Univ. Pioneer Stadium 2:00 p.m. * November 7 Scots vs. Wayland Baptist Univ. Pioneer Stadium 2:00 p.m. * *On games days the band will conduct a 2 hour morning rehearsal from 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. You will be fed lunch prior to the game.

LYON COLLEGE PRE SEASON BAND SCHEDULE Dear Band Member: Below, you will find a complete pre season band schedule. These dates and times are required to participate in the band. You will need to bring your personal instrument if you play the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, or trombone. All other instruments and guard equipment will be provided. Woodwind players are required to have their own supply of reeds and brass players must provide their own valve oil and slide grease. Marching percussion sticks and mallets will be provided. All band members will need to have a flip folder and a lyre. We can make a group order for any of these items after your arrival if needed. All marching band members will need to have these items at all pre season band rehearsals: 1. Dress for a marching band rehearsal shorts, t shirts and athletic shoes. No sandals or flip flops! Wear sunscreen and bring a personal water container. 2. Pencil 3. Music/Folder 4. Instrument in working condition I am so excited about the traditions that we will make together at Lyon College!
