2012 Summary Report Submitted to: The Board of Education Hamlet M. Hernandez, Superintendent Branford Public Schools Lee Panagoulias, Principal Branford High School Prepared by: Branford High School Guidance Department September 2012 pg. 2

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to present vital statistics and information regarding the 273 members of the 2012 of Branford High School. These statistics include post-secondary education, as well as testing and achievement data. Several comparisons in this report are made to the classes of 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 in specific areas. Data was collected through the analysis of school records and information obtained from student questionnaires. pg. 4

CLASS OF 2012 OBSERVATIONS AND TRENDS Attendance at post-secondary institutions for Branford High School graduates continues to remain strong and consistent as the value of further schooling and training has increased. As college admissions at four year colleges and universities have become increasingly rigorous, an increased number of students are applying earlier in the admissions calendar through Early Decision and Early Action. The primary reason for this change in behavior is to gain a competitive advantage in the college application process. The popularity of the modern electronic application process through The Common Application and NAVIANCE program has drastically increased the number of application sent to postsecondary institutions by all high school seniors. With applications to well-known New England colleges at an all-time high, more Branford High School students are looking outside the northeast for a comparable high-quality four-year educational experience. Due to these colleges and universities to attract students from all areas of the country, our students are finding success implementing this strategy. The current state of the local and national economy has affected currents trends relating to post-secondary application process. BHS students attending local two-year colleges and technical schools has increased; as local community colleges and vocational schools have become a more practical and economic option for our students. pg. 5
