March 4, 2018 Our Challenge Dear friends, The Ten Commandments are divided into two tables that summarize our duties to God and to one another. These two tables of the Law remind us that our relationship to God is inseparable from our relationship to others. But our duties to God come first in the order of importance. Even our strict observance of all ten doesn t protect us from the sufferings and losses that come with our human condition. The centrality of the crucifixion of Jesus is a blunt reminder that the Church is not a haven from suffering. We draw aside for prayer and worship, not to escape the world, but to prepare ourselves to engage the world with the wisdom and the power of God. Even back in his day, Jesus was distressed by the commercialization of religion. It angered him to see the temple turned into a marketplace. What would he think of some religion today? He would surely turn the tables on attempts to sell faith as a recipe for financial success and physical health. Places of worship have been places of refuge for the sick and tired, the hungry and homeless for centuries. Churches today provide a wide range of services to their parishioners, from recreational programs to counseling centers. But the Church s primary task is to be a haven from the world where we can find solace and peace. Our faith doesn t give us an easy path: it challenges us with difficult tasks, from disciplining our human drives and appetites to opening our billfolds. We are called to enter the battle for righteousness, to sacrifice ourselves for others. But our faith also promises comfort and protection. The Church sends us into the world rather than taking us out of the world. But it does not expose us to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune continuously. Again and again, we are called back behind the lines of battle to take rest for our bodies and draw strength for our souls. Have a good week! Love and prayers, Father Randy Wedding Anniversary Celebration Bishop Robert Muench recently celebrated a special liturgy honoring couples on their 25th, 50th, and 65th and greater wedding anniversary.
