BCRA Building Science Air Barrier Consultant/Testing Firm

BCRA Building Science AIR BARRIER EXPERTS 1 As leaders in the industry, BCRA Building Science incorporates a working knowledge of proven thermal, air, and moisture barrier techniques into the design, construction, and measurement/verification of the building envelope. This knowledge and understanding is fundamental when providing energy efficiency strategies specific to the building envelope. For the past decade, BCRA has studied not only the energy saving benefits of air barriers, but also the level of durability realized in the building envelope when a continuous air barrier is properly designed and constructed. Over the past several years, BCRA has worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), among other government agencies, to develop new air tightness standards to improve durability and energy use in federal buildings. Building envelope and air tightness requirements are the result of this collaborative work. With design and construction teams now responsible to meet these new requirements, BCRA offers design and testing consulting services to assist design and construction teams in developing appropriate system design, construction observation, and intermediate and final testing of the completed facility. These services include providing system pricing, system options, computer modeling and analysis, Independent Technical Reviews (third party reviews), mock up unit construction/testing, and final testing that includes a whole building pressurization test and infrared thermographic survey. BCRA is a contributing editor for USACE Air Barrier Requirements and USACE Air Barrier Testing Protocol. Additionally, BCRA is a contributing author for the International Energy Agency Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems Annex 46 Energy and Process Assessment Protocol, having authored Appendices F & G detailing proper implementation of Infrared Analysis of Buildings and Air Leakage Testing of Large Buildings. Providing the highest level of building envelope measurement and verification, BCRA is an industry pioneer. The mission of Building Science is to provide durable, energy efficient building envelope solutions working in conjunction with design and construction teams to best serve your needs.

2 USACE Administration Building 270 AIr barrier consultant & testing To date, this is the largest air leakage performance verification test to be completed in the nation per USACE s requirement of a performance verification test prior to building delivery. BCRA was contracted by Granger Contractors to provide consultation and testing for the USACE Administration Building 270 at the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, MI. BCRA had already been involved during the design and construction phases of this project, providing air barrier consulting through multiple design reviews and site visits at key air barrier installation milestones. USACE requirements dictate that a performance verification test be performed on the installed air barrier prior to building delivery. The USACE Protocol for air leakage testing, which incorporates ASTM E779 and C1060, were followed as indicated in the RFP. The building was completed and a leakage rate of 0.16cfm/sf @75Pa was achieved. The infrared survey located only minor areas of air leakage to be remedied. In addition to the enhanced interior environment, the u-shaped barracks creates an attractive, enclosed courtyard with a landscaped seating area. The project received the Silver Design Excellence Award from the Society of American Military Engineers, (SAME), Seattle- Mount Tacoma Posts. Detroit Arsenal, MI October 2010 352,500 SF $58,300 Design Technical Review

3 Dugway Lodge HVAC and Building Envelope Assessment BCRA was hired by Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Programs (FMWRC) to conduct a forensic investigation, including a review of building envelope and HVAC mechanical systems at Dugway lodge. Tasks performed included testing the thermal performance of the building envelope and confirmation that the air leakage rate of the building envelope did not exceed 0.3 cfm/sf at a pressure differential of 0.3 w.c. (75 Pa) in accordance with ASTM E779. During pressurization of the building, BCRA tested the completed building envelope using infrared thermography. Infrared cameras were used with a resolution of 0.1 degrees C or better. Testing was completed in accordance with ISO 6781:1983 and ASTM C1060-90. Air leakage pathway testing was completed using ASTM E1186-03, Standard Practices for Air Leakage Site Detection in Building Envelopes and Air Barrier Systems. BCRA also performed invasive testing on the exterior wall and window system to determine as-built performance of the building envelope. 4 Roosevelt Hall Auditorium Envelope Consulting for Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Attack BCRA was retained to perform air pressure testing on the building envelope of the National War College National Strategic Gaming Center - Building 61A (annex) located at Fort McNair, Washington, DC. This investigation was limited in scope to performing an air pressure test on the air enclosure of the building relative to the requirements detailed in the RFP pertaining to chemical, biological, and radiological attack (CBR). The investigation for air-tightness involved a rate test to produce a quantifiable leakage rate of the enclosure. With a target leakage rate of 0.5cfm/sf @ 75Pa, as defined by the RFP, BCRA worked to define areas of major air leakage and provide solutions to tighten these areas. By working to tighten the envelope, the size and overall cost of the HEPA filter/hvac unit needed for the CBR enclosure was able to be significantly reduced. Fort McNair, Washington DC June 2009 16,000 SF $32,000 Envelope Consultant Historic Renovation Air Barrier Testing

5 US ARMY KOREA - Energy Optimization Assessments Camp Humphreys - Camp Walker - Camp Henry - Camp George - Camp Carroll BCRA conducted building envelope assessments as part of a team that performed energy optimization assessments for five US Army installations in Korea. As a part of the Annex 46 Initiative, the studies identify energy inefficiencies and wastes and propose energy-related projects with applicable funding and execution methods that could enable the installation to better meet energy reduction requirements mandated by Executive Order 13423 and Energy Policy Act (EPAct) 2005. The study was limited to the Level I assessment. The scope of the study included an analysis of building envelopes, ventilation air systems, controls, interior and exterior lighting, as well as evaluation of opportunities to use renewable energy resources. The study identified a total of 28 different potential energy conservation measures (ECMs), which were summarized in a report submitted to the USACE.
