Applicant Project Name: The ABC Music School Youth Choir NARRATIVE FORM Please describe the program for which the funds are being requested. The goal of the program should be to foster music education, mentoring or music training in public or private schools located in Washington, D.C, Virginia, Maryland or West Virginia. Program goals, objectives and key personnel should be listed. This would include identity of the age or grade of the children or youth involved in the project and if the targeted audience is beginner, intermediate or advanced students in music. The description may not exceed the space provided on the Narrative Form. ABC Music School s mission is to provide educational opportunities for the next Generation of music makers. Through its efforts to bring attention to the importance of music education in 1990 the ABC Music District created the ABC Music School. Providing resources to middle school students that have an interest in exploring careers in the music industry, the ABC Music School provides co-curricular after school activities to middle school students while introducing them to professional artists.
Narrative Form Page 2 of 3 Despite its profound mission to bring music directly to children, the ABC Music School has been unable to fulfill its mission to its students. It is the overreaching goal of the ABC Music School Youth Choir to remedy this problem. The Youth Choir will aim to excite a love for music, develop vocal skills and foster creativity among its participants. Located in an under resourced community of West Virginia, the current enrollment in the ABC Music School is 300 students of which 90% receive free or reduced price lunch. The school continuously fails to meet national academic standards and is financially unable to support extracurricular activities such as a Youth Choir. As a result of the students socioeconomic positions, most students have very limited access to positive activities and no formal music experience. The Youth Choir has the potential ability to serve this underserved population whose opportunities to experience music education, mentoring and training has been limited due to economic resources. The ABC Music School Youth Choir will have a musical and educational significance as it will create an intensive experience for a minimum of 20 such students. The program will run 5 days a week after school until 5:00pm following a 30 minute
Narrative Form Page 3 of 3 Homework Help session. At the heart of the program will be the Youth Choir, which will rehearse 3 times a week and perform a minimum of 4 times throughout the duration of the program. These rehearsals, led by vocal coach, Music Musicmaker will focus on developing vocal techniques, discipline and general musicality. They will also master the technical and mathematical-based skills of reading and writing music. The Youth Choir will assume that all students are beginners in every aspect of music and will operate at an accelerated pace to achieve both general and specific musical competencies in 100% of participating students. This will be measured in terms of playing ability and percussion technique, ability to read and write music. Each of these components will be measured objectively as all members of the choir will take both a written musical test and perform a live vocal performance at the conclusion of the program. Through the support of the Washington, D.C. Chapter Music Education Grant Program, music will be back in the life of students at the ABC Music School.
