1 August 2016 Commanders Corner From the desk of the Commander Hardin Post 113 Wow, July came and went so fast! The July Joint membership meeting was productive and informative. I can honestly say that the August 4 th membership meeting will be even better than July's. During the general membership meeting in August, we will have a very inspirational speaker Ms. Kentucky Wheelchair followed by a speaker from the new Veterans Center in Radcliff. The meeting is themed as Hawaiian or Tropical attire. There will be awards for the best themed male, female and couple. Mai Tai beverages will be available for purchase before and after the meeting. During the meeting the Legion headgear is the only authorized headgear. Let s make our meetings informative and fun for all. As a reminder, our general membership meetings are open for all to attend. I hope to see you all at our next meeting if not before! Early Bird Membership drive for 2017 is currently on-going. The adjutant will be available before and after the membership meeting to assist you in the renewal process, and to provide you with your 2017 membership card. The Legion will have another fun night for all of the Legion families on August 6 th. There will be a live band once again without a cover-charge for all 2016/2017 paid Legion family members. The Post will also have a very special guest in attendance Ms. Kentucky Wheelchair. The Post will show her our support as she prepares to depart for competition in the National Ms. Wheelchair competition. Check out the post calendar because August has no shortage of activities! Join us for a great breakfast on the August 13th and on that same day the annual American Legion Riders' Jackpot Poker Run. The post is having a Texas Holdem tournament and open house on August 20 th. Our Special Olympics Golf Scramble is scheduled for 24 August! John Saunders, Commander A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new. Albert Einstein Auxiliary Unit 113 From the desk of the President Auxiliary Unit Earl Porter William Williamson Buster Cyrus Otis Back Robert Cook Roger Wells Jimmie Lamm, Jr. Summer vacation is over for our school age children and grandchildren. As they return to school, let s remember to mentor and encourage them to be good students. We can do some simple things to assist teachers and the schools with the education of our youth such as collecting and donating school supplies throughout the year. For the younger children who may have those occasional accidents that require a change of clothes during school, consider donating packages of underwear and socks, and other clothing items. Also remember to save the Box Top$ for Education, and Labels for Education from the items you purchase. You can turn them in each month to the Unit at the general membership meeting or the Legion breakfast for our Education program. There is a dance at the Legion on August 6 th and as a thank you for your paid membership, members get in free; non-members will have an $8 cover charge. Auxiliary dues for 2017 membership year are $25 for senior member and $7 for junior member (under 18). You can renew on line by going to and logging into the members only tab. Renewal notices will be mailed in September if you prefer writing a check and submitting by mail. Linda Moser is the Unit s Membership Chair for this year; she will process and mail your membership card when your payment is received. Legion breakfast is a monthly event that allows our Unit to serve the Legion family and raise money. Volunteers are needed to make it a success, please donate a few hours of your time. Spread the word of the best breakfast deal in town on the second Saturday of each month. It is open to the entire community, so invite all your neighbors and friends. This month s breakfast is August 13 th. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

I will begin by controlling my thoughts. A person is a product of his thoughts. I want to be happy and hopeful. Therefore, I will have thoughts that are happy and hopeful. I refuse to be victimized by my circumstances. Optimism will be my companion and victory will be my hallmark. Today, I will make a difference. I will be grateful for the twenty-four hours that are before me. Time is a precious commodity. I refuse to allow what little time I have to be contaminated by self-pity, anxiety, or boredom. I will face this day with the joy of a child and the courage of a giant. With this time I will use it for loving and giving. Today I will make a difference. I will not let past failures haunt me. Even though my life is scarred with mistakes, I refuse to rummage through my trash heap of failures. I will admit them. I will correct them. I will press on. Victoriously. No failure is fatal. It's okay to stumble because I will get up. It's okay to fail...i will rise again. Today I will make a difference. I will spend time with those I love and my friends I call family.
