2 Organisational Notes The USMC underwent a staggering number of changes and evolutions within WW2. The rationale was the lessons from the battlefield and new equipment forcing continual refinement of tactics (and thus doctrine and organization) and integration of new equipment. The result was four complete makeovers of the ground combat units from The D-Series of TO&E was in use from the start of the war, but was only fully ratified in This includes battles from the Philippines to the Solomons. In the finality of actual deployment some units were disbanded or re-equipped. In addition, the supply of weapons was given a low priority to the USMC, the Army having a higher priority. The USMC thus had to soldier on with bolt action M1903 Springfields. In addition, the rapid expansion of the Corps made this even harder so weapons being made for the Dutch were redirected to the USMC and used to equip special USMC units. And somehow the odd rarity of a British Boyes AT rifle appeared even. So without the high firepower the USMC became known for in later years, The USMC was reborn in WW2, and forged on the quality of its men not its machines. The tactics and experiments paved the way for the E series. The E Series formalized the concept of fireteams, a then revolutionary concept now used worldwide. These were two 6 man teams each with rifle and BAR, allowing each fireteam of the Section to provide equal firepower as they moved in attack or covered the other in defence. Availability of more M1 Garands now gave each fireteam significant firepower. The E series first saw use at Tarawa, and used onwards into the central Pacific in The F series built further on this and reduced the fireteam to just four men, but increased the number of fireteams in a section to three with a separate Section leader. The advantages of this were overwhelming, and the command and control of the Section became easier, and firepower increased further. The F series was used from the Marianas and on into Finally, the G series was not actually adopted till after the war finished, but was used by most of the USMC divisions in 1945 (some still used the F ). This gave further firepower to each Section, and made many changes among supporting units and such. Medal of Honor Plt.Sgt. MITCHELL PAIGE Guadalcanal 1942 For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division, in combat against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on October 26, When the enemy broke through the line directly in front of his position, Platoon Sergeant Paige, commanding a machine-gun section with fearless determination, continued to direct the fire of his gunners until all his men were either killed or wounded. Alone, against the deadly hail of Japanese shells, he manned his gun, and when it was destroyed, took over another, moving from gun to gun, never ceasing his withering fire against the advancing hordes until reinforcements finally arrived. Then, forming a new line, he dauntlessly and aggressively led a bayonet charge, driving the enemy back and preventing a break through in our lines. His great personal valor and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. 3 Copyright 2007 Gordon Roach, Task Force Productions

A. CASAMENTO Guadalcanal 1942 For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company "D", First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division on Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, in action against the enemy Japanese forces on 1 November Serving as a leader of a machine gun section, Corporal Casamento directed his unit to advance along a ridge near the Matanikau River where they engaged the enemy. He positioned his section to provide covering fire for two flanking units and to provide direct support for the main force of his company which was behind him. During the course of this engagement, all members of his section were either killed or severely wounded and he himself suffered multiple, grievous wounds. Nonetheless, Corporal Casamento continued to provide critical supporting fire for the attack and in defense of his position. Following the loss of all effective personnel, he set up, loaded, and manned his unit's machine gun, tenaciously holding the enemy forces at bay. Corporal Casamento single-handedly engaged and destroyed one machine gun emplacement to his front and took under fire the other emplacement on the flank. Despite the heat and ferocity of the engagement, he continued to man his own weapon and repeatedly repulsed multiple assaults by the enemy forces, thereby protecting the flanks of the adjoining companies and holding his position until the arrival of his main attacking force. Corporal Casamento's courageous fighting spirit, heroic conduct, and unwavering dedication to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. 6 Copyright 2007 Gordon Roach, Task Force Productions
