2 CG Aux Humanitarian Service Award Presented to members of the Auxiliary who distinguish themselves as individuals or as members of an operational unit by meritorious, direct, non-routine participation in a significant act or operation of a humanitarian nature. Direct participation is defined as being physically present at the designated location, having directly contributed and influenced action. 2

3 Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation An Auxiliarist must have made a significant contribution to a group or team cited for the award. This team can consist of Auxiliarists and other team CG members, or all Auxiliarists. The person in charge of the team should make the recommendation 3

4 Auxiliary Commandant Letter of Commendation The award is intended for Auxiliarists serving in any capacity with the Coast Guard or Auxiliary for an act of service resulting in unusual and/or outstanding achievement, whose performance is lesser than that required for the Auxiliary Achievement Medal. The award can also be used to recognize an Auxiliarist s service/performance for a special event or project. 4

5 Auxiliary Achievement Medal This award recognizes outstanding achievement or service of a nature, which is worthy of special recognition. The key words are sustained professional, leadership achievements and period of time. The achievements could be in administration or operations. 5

6 Auxiliary Commendation Medal Given to Auxiliarists in recognition of outstanding assistance that furthers any of the Auxiliary s authorized activities, except operations. The key words are outstanding achievement, which significantly furthers any of the Auxiliary s authorized activities. The Auxiliary Commendation Medal is for outstanding administrative services. 6

7 Medal of Operational Merit Given to Auxiliarists in recognition of outstanding skill in performing an assist, rescue, or other meritorious operational service. the key words are outstanding operational performance, skill, assist, rescue or other meritorious operational service. 7

8 Auxiliary Meritorious Service Award awarded to Auxiliarists who have contributed exceptional meritorious service to the Coast Guard and/or Auxiliary. Performance must clearly be of a nature much higher than that normally expected. Key words are outstanding and meritorious service worthy of special recognition, which contributes significantly to fulfillment of Auxiliary goals at the local level. 8

9 Auxiliary Plaque of Merit Recognizes heroism in the face of grave personal risk and which clearly stands out as above normal expectations. The key aspects of performance for the award are extreme skill, assist or rescue, and risk to the Auxiliarist s life. The Auxiliary Plaque of Merit can only be given for an assist, or rescue. 9

10 Legion of Merit Awarded to Auxiliarists in leadership positions who have performed exceptionally meritorious service. Recognized performance must clearly be much higher than expected and have a measurable, positive effect on the Auxiliary across multiple Auxiliary regions or at Auxiliary Area or National level. 10

11 Auxiliary Distinguished Service Medal performance required to justify this award is exceptional performance of duty, which benefits the Auxiliary as a whole. Must be clearly much higher than normally expected, and must have a measurable, positive effect on the entire organization. 11

12 Form 7002 Must accompany any ribbon or medal award request. 12

13 Best Practices Recognize those who go above & beyond the call of their normal duties Check to ensure awards are not duplicated Ensure robust detail and justification in the citation can substantiate an award DON T criticize an individual s predecessor. Focus on items that are high profile or extend beyond a member s command. The citation is an account which will be cherished by them and a source of pride to their families. The Rewards and Recognition Handbook (COMDTINST P ) says we are telling a story to everyone about what the person receiving the award has done. 13

15 What do I Write About? 3 to 5 items: what the member did best Had the greatest impact on the service or unit. Number-quantified action and a following result. For example, 100 hours of member training facilitated qualification of 3 new AUX- OPs, has the action and the result. Ask yourself What was done? How did they do it? What was the Result? 15

16 Hints For Using Statistics Use numbers to quantify actions and provides concrete results For example, Auxiliarist Garza volunteered many hours of personal time watchstanding, which saved the Coast Guard a lot of money Doesn t tell the story as well as, Auxiliarist Garza volunteered 400 hours serving in the operations center every Friday, which freed up one full time equivalent person to perform other duties at the Station, a benefit to the Coast Guard of $10,

17 Wording and the Guts Steer away from using specific jargon or acronyms or name of equipment that are not commonly used in the English language. A good rule is to use simple, everyday words that convey powerful thoughts. Also avoid being gushy or using puffed up words that seem phony or pompous. 17

18 Goal #1 - Create a Positive Environment 1. Appoint a flotilla diversity advisor. 2. Publish at least one article on diversity awareness in flotilla newsletter per year. 3. Conduct one in-flotilla diversity member training session per year. (Training materials available on Diversity page of the AUX Web and from district Diversity Advisors.) 4. Target all local neighborhoods and cultures in the flotilla's community in the flotilla recruiting action plan. 5. Document a minimum of 6 meetings per year attended by 50% of the flotilla membership. 6. FC and/or VFC have attended leadership training at the district or national level. 18

19 Goal #2 - Value all Members 1. Document informal awards and recognition program - specify actions taken for positive reinforcement of members actions and behaviors. 2. List a minimum of 2 routine communications with all members, i.e. newsletters, flotilla meeting notes, staff meetings with notes distributed. 3. Conduct exit interviews for all members leaving the Auxiliary and forward to DSO-HR via the SO-HR. 4. Maintain 90% of members each year -Fewer than 10% of members disenroll or retire each year. 5. Show 65% of members are involved in Auxiliary activities according to AUXDATA. 6. List a minimum of 4 fellowship activities sponsored by the flotilla throughout the year for all members and their families and friends 19

20 Goal #3 - Promote Individual Success 1. Assign a formal mentor to each new member for the first year of membership. 2. Utilize the Member Involvement plan to help new members plan their involvement and training. 3. Provide written goals and expectations for all flotilla staff and committee positions to all members at the beginning of the year. 4. Provide all staff officers with specific written job descriptions upon appointment. 5. Establish a mentoring program for potential staff officers. 6. Provide adequate access to meetings for members and potential members with disabilities. 20
