Dar Troke 410 East Wabasha Jeff Brokaw Commander My Fellow Legionnaires: COMMANDER S MESSAGE September / October 2018 Windjammer On Saturday, September 8 th, our S.A.L.'s will be having their fall chicken-que. Get your tickets early for their always tasty meal! On Sunday September 9, our annual Post 9 picnic will be held at the Post facility. You MUST be a paid up Legion, Auxiliary, or SAL member. Please sign up at the bar if you plan to attend as to help us plan for food and beverage (which will be free). There is also a sign-up sheet for the bean bag tournament to be held that day. Once again we will have BINGO for the adults. If you have not paid your 2019 dues, (which are due now), you can pay that day. Hope to see you there! Tis the season. FISH FRIES and BASKET NIGHTS are starting! Our first basket night of the season is September 4 th... and please remember, these are held every first and third Tuesday of each month. Our first Fish Fry of the season will be held on September 21 st. Fish Fries will be held every third Friday of the month until Lent, then will be held every Friday until the end of Lent. Entertainment will be provided on most Fish Fry nights. Last month I mentioned starting a fund for the removal and possible carving of the large Ash tree in front of our Post. As of this writing, I have a commitment for an additional $ donation on top of my donation of $ Its a good start. Don't be shy. All donations are welcome... large or small. I also have a very limited number of Collector coins celebrating the 100 th anniversary of your American Legion. The price is $10.00, which is what the Post paid for these coins. No Post profit is made on these sales. All profit made by the Department will off set convention costs. As of this writing, the National Convention's 100 th anniversary was held in Minneapolis, MN on Aug th. Some information that you may have not known: In 1919 your American Legion was formed in our state of Minnesota. The first Legion Post formed was in Minneapolis, MN. Because the population of the United States at that time was mostly east of the Mississippi River, Indianapolis was awarded the National Headquarter's site.
4 Several times over the years I have been asked why our member obituary s have not been printed in the Legionnaire magazine. In order to have a member's obituary printed, the family has to provide us with the following information: 1. Complete name of deceased 2. Age at death 3. Branch of service 4. Exact date of death 5. Additional service info 6. Name of Post, unit or squadron. Your information then transmitted to the State must be LESS than 2 months old. If you have any suggestions or concerns, please feel free to talk to me, or better yet join us at a Post meeting. BE A MEMBER, STAY A MEMBER, BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER, BE PROUD OF YOUR LE- GION! Jeff Brokaw, Post #9 Commander
5 BAR REPORT From your Post 9 Facilities Manager Katie Lagace Facilities Manager If you look around town, you can spot a few trees that are already changing colors & dropping their leaves. Cooler temps and changing leaves means that Fall is on its way, and with it we welcome back Fish Fry s at the Legion!! I know I can t be the only one who has been patiently awaiting all that our yummy Fish Fry menu has to offer. We kick-off our first Fish Fry of the season on Friday September 21st and we will have music by Time & A Half from 7-11, so come early and stay late! Taco Nights continue on into the fall. Tacos are served the 4 th Friday of each month, until we start the Lenten season. Most taco nights (and Fish Fry nights) we offer music after dinner. So please stay tuned for all of our upcoming music because we have a TON of really good bands lined up for the rest of the year. There will be a board in the bar with upcoming music, please check it out, there is sure to be something for all! Get Lucky at the Legion is BAAAACCCKKKKK! We start up again on Thursday September 6 th. Some evenings we sure have a full house in here, so come early for a cold beer, and a good seat! We have a few exciting new surprises up our sleeves for this year, so make sure you are here to find out what s new! Get Lucky at the Legion is every Thursday from 5-7pm. You may remember that last year around this time we had our Legion picnic Sunday September 9 th we are having our annual Legion picnic this year. Many of you may remember having an annual picnic at the old Legion in the years past. If you missed last year, come down and check it out. There is a sign-up sheet in the bar again so that we can have an accurate count for food, beer, games, prizes etc. You may also sign up for the Bean Bag Toss ahead of time, posted in the bar. Please stop in or call to sign up any day after 10am , sign up by September 6 th. We start the party at noon! I hope to see you all there! Since we seem to be on the subject of food, I should also remind everyone that Basket Night is back on the calendar for Fall. I don t know about everyone else, but there is just something I love about our Basket Night menu. A reminder that Basket Night falls on the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesday of each month, and is served from 5-7pm. Yummm Our wonderful SAL members did a fantastic job helping out at Goodview Day s again this year. They were asked to volunteer some time and manpower to cook the chicken that was served that weekend. As always it was delicious, I even received a few phone calls this past week from people raving about how good it was! That being said, word has spread, as to just how good their Chicken Q s are I suggest getting your tickets for their next Chicken Q now!! September 8 th they are having a Chicken Q here at the Legion, contact any SAL member or ask your bartender to buy tickets ahead of time. I feel like they just might sell out early folks! Speaking of early Our Early Bird Dinner will be coming up soon. This is a free dinner for all members who are currently paid up with their dues. There will be a sign-up sheet available in the bar for this dinner closer to October. Early Bird Dinner is Saturday October 20 th. September marks the very exciting anniversary of me being the Facility Manager here at the Legion for another year. I would yet again, like to take the time thank everyone here for all of the love, support, help, and kind words of encouragement that I have received over these last four years. I honestly couldn t do what I do without everyone single one of you! THANK YOU! Let s welcome the beautiful Minnesota Fall weather! Katie Lagace Post 9 Facility Manager

10 American Legion Post 9 Veteran s Relief Fund As many of you may remember, back in August of 2016, the American Legion Post 9 was involved in a Gospel/Patriotic Concert that was presented at the Central Lutheran Church. The purpose of the concert was to raise funds to be used to support Winona area Veteran s. The funds raised at the concert were put into the American Legion Post 9 Veteran s Relief Fund. These funds are dispersed to Veterans needing help with financial assistance. Veterans are qualified by the Winona County Veterans Service Officers. This is to insure that the funds are given to those veterans who truly qualify and deserve the assistance. The fund has provided assistance for electric, water and gas bills, medical bills, a new water heater, rent, car repairs, property tax, phone bills and food cards. Expenditures are made directly to vendors. This fund is the most direct help for Veteran s in the County. When the request is authorized by the Winona County Veterans Service Officers the check is written and sent to the vendor. While this fund has gone a long way in the last two years to help our Winona County Veterans, we are asking for your help to keep this fund going. Donations to the fund can be made by writing your check to the American Legion Post 9 Veteran s Relief Fund. As I have said, this fund has done a lot for our Veteran s and we would like to see this fund grow. Your donation will be greatly appreciated by American Legion Post 9 and the Veterans we serve. Thank you very much. Respectfully submitted Sam Sasser American Legion Post 9 Adjutant
