1 Upcoming Events: Vol. 5 December 2014 CWST Cluster LDX (APR) Dining WVSU (APR) Commissioning (MAY) In this Issue: Page Commander s Corner 1 Making Headlines 2,3 Desk of the SMI 4 New Cadet 4 Ranger Challenge 5 Hall of Fame 6,7 Newest Lieutenants 8 Hail and Farewell 9 Army Reserve Officers Training Corps ~ Commander s Corner Yellow Jacket Battalion First I would like to say THANK YOU to all the Cadre, Staff, Cadets, Institution Administrators, faculty, and alumni for your warm welcome to West Virginia and the Yellow Jacket Battalion. My first semester as the Professor of Military Science/ Department Chair has been all I expected and then some. Just in my first semester I have experienced several highs which include awarding scholarships and room waivers that could make a positive difference in a student s college career to the low of having to notify cadets of disqualification. Of course our ultimate high was the commissioning of Second Lieutenants Gregory Hott and Rashawn Terwilinger at the West Virginia State Capitol on 12 December The significance of the Yellow Jacket Battalion was made even clearer on 13 December 2014 during the WVSU Commencement where I was afforded the opportunity to administer the oath of office to 2LT Terwilinger. I got goose bumps as the audience expressed the value in what we do with a thunderous applause for 2LT Terwilinger as he came to the stage to have his gold bars pinned by his mother and brother. I want to have more moments like that during my tenure here with the Yellow Jacket Battalion. My goal is, with everyone s help, to attract scholar, athlete, leaders (SAL) and grow them into the leaders the Army and our nation needs in the future. All of us can contribute to this effort by encouraging qualified high school students and underclassmen in your individual spheres of influence (community, church, social affiliations) to look at ROTC as a FIRST choice as a foundation for their future. I continue to get my arms wrapped around all of the details of this adventure but what I enjoy most is the interaction I am able to have with Cadets and the opportunity I have to grow them not only as future Army leaders but as human beings, too. The staff and I take a personal charge to grow the young people that are a part of the Yellow Jacket Battalion. They are/will be treated like I would want my son or daughter to be treated. To the Cadets, this is just the beginning as we look ahead to an event filled Spring 2015 semester which is highlighted with a Leader Development Exercise (LDX) and Dining Out in April and commissioning in May. On top of all the ROTC activities let s not forget the importance of attending and doing well in ALL classes. I look forward to our continued success in the growth of the Yellow Jacket Battalion and the commissioning of quality second lieutenants. 1
