2 L. Col. Kyle Noel Commander, 113 ASOS COMMANDER S COMMENTS Welcome from he 113h Air Suppor Operaions Squadron. When I was informed ha i was my urn o wrie he Commander s Commens for he upcoming ediion of he Racer Flyer, I was no sure wha I waned o wrie abou. Afer hinking on i, I decided o wrie abou individual responsibiliy and sandards of behavior. More specifically, how each individual s personal acions conribue o or derac from he mission of he USAF and ANG. During my career as a pilo, I have been expeced o memorize flying sandards for each organizaion ha I have been a member of. Flying sandards are common o all miliary figher pilos and dicae acical execuion and employmen of your weapons sysem. A any given ime, when employing a comba aircraf, be i an F-16 or an A-10, I knew in almos any siuaion wha he man or woman in he oher aircraf around me were going o do and wha hey expeced of me based on he flying sandards. The knowledge of exacly wha I expeced from each pilo in he fligh grealy decreased my work load and freed up ime and brain byes o concenrae on he hings ha were happening ha were no Sandard. This in urn made myself and my fligh more lehal, and increased our chances of successfully accomplishing he mission. While I was inimaely familiar wih flying sandards, when I came o he ASOS las year, I found he ASOS had a se of sandards, as well. They were, however, differen from wha I was accusomed o. Raher han acical execuion sandards, hey had 113 ASOS TACP Sandards of Behavior. This was somehing I had never seen before and was very impressed wih he concep. As a member of he miliary, we all subscribe o he Core Values of our service, bu in he ASOS hey wen one sep furher o refine individual sandards expeced, which align wih our Core Values. I have been humbled by he men and women of his fine organizaion and heir individual commimens o he mission we execue. I believe ha a big par of our success is ha from day one each member is augh exacly wha is expeced from hem o make he enire enerprise successful, and see ha our mission is accomplished. Based on his I hough I would share wha our sandards of behavior are in he ASOS, and wha hey mean o me as hey are ransferable o all organizaions. 1. If you don have a job or ask, find one or help someone ha does. This simply quanifies your membership in he eam. Jus because you are no busy does no mean ha here is no work o be done. Raher, seek ou somehing o do o or help someone ha is busy o furher he accomplishmen of he mission. 2. Expec o make misakes, learn from hem and drive on. Don be afraid o ake he lead and make decisions. This is he only way ha we learn, so push he envelope, bu ensure ha you and ohers learn from any failures ha may resul. 3. Mainain 100% accounabiliy of your personnel and equipmen. In our mission, his quie frankly, is a life or deah sandard of behavior as loss of accounabiliy of personnel or equipmen can have caasrophic resuls; however, in any mission, his holds rue. As members of he eam, all have a job o do, and he equipmen he ax payers enrus us wih is necessary, or we would no have i. Thus, loss of accounabiliy deerioraes he accomplishmen of he mission. 3 CHIEF S COMMENTS Chief Maser Sg. Rober Beasley, 181 IW/DGS Guardians of Freedom Our focus for he las several years has been on he ransformaion of he 181s Inelligence Wing and he skill-se ha each and every member brings o he figh. For several years, he Air Naional Guard has been referred o as Guardians of Freedom, a heme ha ruly ses he Naional Guard apar. On November 1, 2011, Chief Maser Sergean of he Air Force James Roy said The Air Naional Guard is in he figh and i is up o each and every Guard member o ell heir sory o heir families, employers and fellow service members. As Guardians of Freedom, we serve his grea naion in such a way ha mos people canno undersand, nor comprehend he unique dual-mission roles we play. As Ciizen Airmen we make sacrifices on a daily basis. Our abiliy o mainain dual skill-ses, commimens o boh civilian employers and he Air Naional Guard; we provide his naion a grea service. You should be proud o be par of he overall accomplishmen of he mission. This year, as we roll ino a fiscally rying economy, budge cus, enlised grade reviews, and coninued mission requiremens; ake a momen and hink abou how you, as a member of he Indiana Air Naional Guard, have conribued o he global figh. I s ime o ell our sory! I is essenial o remember ha no maer wha role you execue, every Guardsman plays an inegral and vial par o he mission. An airman s primary purpose is mission accomplishmen. From siing on he mission floor, o providing medical services, o ensuring all he communicaions are working. Commencing wih Securiy Forces- providing force proecion, Services- providing meals and oher funcions, and Finance-working pay issues and he like. To Civil Engineers who mainain our faciliies, Recruiers- recruiing, and Personnel aking care of our human resources; o all our airmen ha rain o be in he figh down range. All of hese componens are linked ogeher and necessary o ensure Mission Accomplishmen. While he Air Naional Guard coninues o play a vial role in miliary affairs, our Airmen are he driving force behind he Ciizen-Airmen componen. The Air Naional Guard Command Chief, Chief Maser Sg. Muncy said, I need Airmen o ell heir sory, who you are, and wha you do. Tell our Air Guard sory." When you ge an opporuniy o share your sory, sand proud and ell your sory. We ARE Guard, Ciizen-Airman, and Americans! Finally, I d like o ake his opporuniy o hank each and every Guardsman, in he Air Naional Guard, for your service. You provide a valuable resource ha is vial o he accomplishmen of he mission. I salue each and every one of you as you coninue o serve and provide a safe and secure home your families, for he Sae of Indiana, and our grea Naion. You are, Guardians of Freedom. Family Readiness Group The Annual Indiana Naional Guard Voluneer Workshop and Youh Symposium was held Saurday, March 9, 2013, a he Hya Regency Hoel in Downown Indianapolis. Addiionally, his was an opporuniy for us o nominae hose voluneers who have been ousanding FRG voluneers and youh as hey coninue o suppor our Racer Family. 4 Commander s Commens (coninued from page 2) 4. Be responsible for mainenance and accounabiliy of your equipmen. Again, we are sewards of funds ha he ax payers of our grea naion provide us. Be responsible for aking care of he ools hey provide you o accomplish our missions. This also implies ha we are all responsible for following hrough wih mainenance of equipmen even when he process is ouside of our lane or handed off o anoher agency. None of us in he Wing can fall ino he rap of using he sysem as an excuse for failing or no following hrough. 5. Trus your junior leaders and encourage heir innovaion. I have had he grea pleasure of working for some fanasic leaders and commanders in my career. I am confiden ha hey were no born ha way. Raher hey have been menored by Senior NCOs and Officers o develop hem o wha hey became. We all need o give responsibiliies o, and place rus in, our young NCOs and Officers in order o develop hem ino grea leaders. A senior NCO or Officer ha has simply followed orders for heir enire career, and suddenly finds hemselves in a posiion where no one is elling hem wha o do will fail, and are a derimen o he mission. Managemen can be augh in a classroom, bu making ough decisions and ruly leading is a skill ha mus be learned hrough experience and coninually honed. 6. Ensure all are rained, prepared, and have he correc equipmen. This is a enan of leadership. Take care of your people and ensure hey have he raining, and equipmen required o do he mission. Again, his is an area where we canno allow he sysem o be an excuse for failing o provide for our Airmen up / 1-down cross raining a all levels. Ensure hose appoined over you and your subordinaes are able o do your job. This menors and prepares your subordinaes and ensures no single poins of failure o he mission. The problem ha his sandard addresses is more common o he ANG and AFRES han he Acive Duy Air Force based on our limied full-ime force, bu he impac on our Airmen is he same. We canno afford o bring he machine o a hal every ime one key player is ou of he office. 8. Rehearsals, back briefs and Pre Comba Inspecions are mandaory. This may come across as specific o Balefield Airmen, bu has applicabiliy o all career fields. Rehearsals are pracice. Train like you figh, so when he figh comes you are prepared. No one should plan o rise o he occasion in a crisis. Raher, hey should plan o defaul o heir highes level of raining and readiness since ha is exacly wha happens. Back briefs are simply making sure your leadership and subordinaes are informed. Pre Comba Inspecions means knowing he saus of your equipmen and resources a all imes. 9. Idenifying an issue or LimFac is only sep 1 of 2, sep 2 is fixing i. Don be he guy or gal ha simply poins ou wha is wrong o your leaders and view ha as doing he job. Raher idenify issues before your leadership does, ake ownership of he problem, and fix hem a he lowes level pracical. If you canno fix he problem a your level, hen do your bes o give soluions or courses of acion o consider as you elevae he problem. 10. Hold yourself accounable before anyone else needs o. Be your own bigges criic and consanly evaluae how you can do beer. If you fail or make misakes, ake responsibiliy for your acions, and ensure you and ohers learn from hem. 11. Morale is a resource, manage i effecively. In he profession of arms we are asked o do difficul hings. Long hours, discomfor, and unpopular decisions are a source of consernaion and can degrade morale. As leaders, evaluae your decisions o ensure ha if you are placing a burden on your people ha i is reasonable and necessary for he mission o be accomplished, raher han he easy soluion or arbirarily. 12. Be ready, always. As ciizen soldiers we are o be prepared o answer our naion s call anywhere a any ime. Say fi, consanly improve your knowledge, and say rained as you never know when you will be hrus ino acion and you mus be prepared. 13. EVERYONE FIGHTS, NO ONE QUITS. This line may come from Sarship Trooper fame, bu is mean lierally. We are an insrumen of power for our naion. Regardless of wha drove your decision o serve, deep down inside you mus have he fire o be prepared o figh and risk your life, if necessary, in service o our naion. No maer how difficul he ask, never qui as long as you have breah in your lungs. Throughou my career I have always been old ha people are our mos imporan resource. I believe his o be absoluely rue. No maer how advanced he echnology is ha we use o complee our mission, wihou highly rained and moivaed personnel mainaining and operaing hese machines, hey become useless. Envision yourself as a cog on he wheel of he big machine we call he miliary. If you individually fail or don give your all, he machine begins o break down and becomes ha much less effecive. Take he ime o individually examine your sandards of behavior o see if you are living ou our core values, and being he bes you can be. By coninually evaluaing ourselves in greaer deail han we evaluae ohers, o make posiive modificaions o our own individual behavior, we can srenghen he machine as a whole and complee our mission o Fly, Figh, and Win. 181 Inelligence Wing 4 MarApr 2013 w M C C M b S a B C T B

During his exercise, CAP and local firs responders, suppored by Air Guardsmen from he 181 IW, worked side-by-side, refining criical eambuilding skills in join command seings. Tradiionally, he 181 IW provides logisical and faciliies suppor o he CAP. This year, Racers from he 181 IW Inelligence Group and Weaher Fligh voluneered o provid updaes and analysis o boh ground and air eams o increase safey and operaional effeciveness. We have aken 12 years of comba operaions and lessons learned and are applying hose skills o assis he CAP in search and rescue operaions, said Maser Sg. Greg Hrova. Exercise Resless Tomahawk is a yearly CAP exercise designed o rain he CAP, 181 IW, and oher ciy and couny firs responders o successfully work ogeher in he air, on he ground, and in he command cener o conduc search and rescue operaions. This year s muli-agency exercise included five CAP aircraf, muliple ground vehicles and canine search and rescue. During he exercise, he effors of all organizaions resuled in he recovery of a los civilian pilo and a missing huner. 7 A House Full of Hisory By Senior Airmen Alex Nyirendah, 207h Weaher Fligh, UPAR To say ha Maser Sg. Bri King likes miliary hisory is a bi of an undersaemen. Maser Sg. King owns wha has o be one of he larges privae collecions of hisoric miliary uniforms and equipmen in Indiana. And i all sared wih one World War II German helme. I m no sure wha really sared my ineres in miliary hisory, says King. I have memories of waching Norh Vienamese anks roaming around Saigon on elevision in 1975, and my favorie elevision show as a child was Black Sheep Squadron. Any ime a war movie, like Paon or A Bridge Too Far came on, I was glued o he TV. All I waned for Chrismas or birhdays was usually miliary books. I remember hinking, as I was eiher waching on screen or looking a phoos in books, how cool i would acually be o own he helmes, uniforms, equipmen, and weapons ha I was seeing. In December 1978, King asked his parens for a German World War II helme. Up o ha ime, I don ever remember being as excied abou a Chrismas gif as I was abou ha helme, says King. Tha German helme, pained o represen he German Army in Norh Africa from , was he beginning of a collecion ha now encompasses over 200 full uniform ses, including equipmen and weaponry. King s basemen has he appearance of a museum soreroom, wih clohing racks of uniforms, shelves full of helmes and headgear, and plasic ubs full of bels, ammuniion pouches, and all he oher liany of equipmen ha would be used o oufi soldiers hrough he ages. There are even a few mannequins hrown in for display purposes. Two more rooms in his home conain an exensive miliary hisory library wih several housand books and even more helmes and uniforms. I m glad my wife is undersanding, smiles King. I don hink oo many women would like having ha much of heir home dedicaed o heir husband s hobby. The firs quesion one migh ask is wha o do wih all his suff? I ask myself ha all he ime, laughs King. I love educaing people abou miliary hisory. I aend hisoric reenacmens when I can, and se up numerous displays during he year around Indiana, where I can alk wih he public abou he iems. King has also aken his mobile museum ino schools o help bring hisory o new generaions, and he has posed for ariss while wearing any number of impressions, which is he erm reenacors use o describe a paricular uniform se. He has even appeared as an exra on wo Hisory Channel documenaries. King s impressions cover cenuries of warfare. He can oufi himself as everyhing from a Roman Legionary of he 2nd Cenury o, more recenly, a Sovie pararooper from he Sovie-Afghan War. I can say I have a paricularly favorie period of ime, says King bu I guess for he sheer numbers of uniforms I have, World War II would ake he prize, wih World War I coming a disan second. I have muliple uniforms of all he major players in he wars; German, American, Russian, Briish. Some years back I decided ha all he oher smaller naions kind of go he shor shrif from he reenacing communiy, so I also sared focusing on oher impressions like Canada, Ausralia, France, Ialy and even more obscure counries, like Poland, Finland, Romania, and Hungary. When asked if here would ever come a ime when he decided ha his collecion was complee, King said, Well, I ell myself I need o sop all he ime, mosly because of financial consrains. I have scaled way back over he las few years, bu if I see somehing ha s affordable on ebay, and wih he wife s permission, I may pick up more iems here and here. 7 Racer Flyer
