1 2010 National Scout Jamboree Council Information Sheet PURPOSE: The information contained herein is intended to help you prioritize your request for joining a particular 2010 National Jamboree troop. Among other factors, you should consider the troop tour travel plan outlines, troop leadership, and projected costs. Please review the information carefully, and make sure to return the attached Preference Form with your troop selection preferences no later than December 15, BACKGROUND: The National Jamboree is one of Scouting's grandest traditions a gathering of Scouts and leaders from across the nation, as well as from around the globe. Jamboree is the quintessence of the Scouting movement. Program features will reflect the skills of Scouting, the nation's heritage, physical fitness, conservation, and the spirit of brotherhood. During this brief period when the Scouts gather, you can see everything that Scouts do - and everything that Scouting is all in one place. Daily activities offer fun and challenge. Religious services provide time for reflection. A cavalcade of highlight events further depicts the rich heritage of Scouting. Scouts practice and demonstrate skills such as archery, orienteering, running obstacle courses, shotgun shooting, boating, canoeing, and hunting safety, as well as take part in the disabilities-awareness trail, competitive events, the Merit Badge Midway, and an arts and science fair. Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, created the idea of holding a large encampment of Scouts and leaders to celebrate Scouting in England. He called it a "jamboree." Since 1937, The Boy Scouts of America has held a National Scout Jamboree for Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Councils throughout the United States. The National Scout Jamboree will be held at Fort A. P. Hill in the rolling hills of Caroline County, Virginia, near the towns of Fredericksburg and Bowling Green. The installation was named in honor of Lt. General Ambrose Powell Hill, a Virginia native who distinguished himself as a Confederate commander. This 76,000- acre U.S. Army facility has served as the permanent site for the National Scout Jamboree since The 2010 National Scout Jamboree provides many unique opportunities for the youth and leaders who will participate. However, as with Scouting, there is a more serious purpose behind the activities: The mission of the 2010 National Scout Jamboree is to enrich lives of youth participants, provide a fun experience, showcase Scouting in its 100 th year, reinforce Scout skills, offer innovative programming, provide experience in leadership and teamwork, and offer a diverse, healthy, safe environment where everyone lives the values of the Scout Oath and Law. For additional information log on to November 2008 Page 1 NSJ Council Information Sheet

2 DATES AND LOCATION: The 2010 National Scout Jamboree will be held Monday, July 26, through Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia, which is near the historic areas of Washington, D.C., and Williamsburg, Yorktown, Richmond, and Norfolk, Virginia. The opening day will be Tuesday, July 27, 2010 and the closing day will be Tuesday, August 3, The jamboree troop arrival day will be Monday afternoon, July 26, 2010 and the departure day will be Wednesday August 4, ORGANIZATION AND TROOP SELECTION: Western Los Angeles County Council has been authorized by the Western Region to organize a council contingent consisting of 5 troops. The jamboree is open to all who are qualified on a first-come basis. After these troops have been filled, a stand-by list of alternates will be established. Scouts will be assigned to a jamboree troop (Troops A-E) consisting of 36 Scouts, and four adult leaders. Two of our troops (Troop E and one other troop to be determined) will have one patrol consisting of international Scouts and leaders. Each Scout will be a member of a patrol within a troop. Best efforts will be used to honor timely submitted troop selection preferences on the Preference Form, with priority given based upon the date the applicant s deposit was received by the council. The final determination of all troop assignments will be made by the council National Jamboree steering committee. Full refunds will be made to any Scout who notifies the council, within fifteen (15) business days after their troop assignment is made, that they do not wish to or are unable to participate based upon the troop assignment. Once a Scout has accepted his appointment to a troop as a delegate to the jamboree, their initial reservation fee of $200 will be credited toward the national reservation fee which is non-refundable.
